iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

I have just spoken to the reseller that I bought this device from and they instantly said that this is not acceptable performance from a 1300 euro device.

They adviced me to take it to their store for repairs, and if they can’t resolve the issues, it will be replaced with a new one. What a relief. I really hope it will function well after the repairs, or that I get a new one that doesn’t have these problems. Or if nothing else, there’s always the option of rescinding the purchase of a faulty device.

If your device has the overheating issue etc. - speak to your reseller. Or contact Apple Support if you bought it directly from Apple.

It should be repaired or replaced.

I again had random surge of heating quickly and change settings with no result. Like turn off 5G. Dynamic charging but no chance. I did remember back in beta on my iphone 7 that heating was issue when I used widget the new hot feature.

Thinking new 12 serries this might not be issue. I removed all widget of my screen I do like them a lot but worth to try see if they still causes problem.

after I removed then all phone heat went down felt it with touch and screen poped slowly back to normal brightness. Still running same apps as when heat start.

I gues there still issue in widget system went under the radar? Maybe others can confirm same result?

Hay,

i can share my experience on my 12 pro. I got a new 12 pro and I transferred all my data from 7+, used for 4 and half years. Then two days later I got a screen frozen issue and apps not working, phone getting hot, but not the phone shutting down. Apple support couldn’t solve the problem and in the end I got a new replacement phone.

I didn’t load my old data instead I just backup my photos, whatapps, notes, reminders and other apps that needed backup.

For those App I don’t need history of data and backup I downloaded from App Stores.

I turned off 5 G cos my area has no

5 g signal and other unnecessary locations services.

My 12 pro much better. I don’t face a screen frozen issue or phone getting super hot while I m using Apps and browsers concurrently.

But there are still issues that when I open a certain app, my local bank app, the phone quickly getting hot and App Not able to download from the App Store unless I restart it.

I have a fix for you if it feels too hot for you liking go to settings; go to cellular; go to cellular data options; then voice and data I recommend putting LTE as it will keep your phone at a normal temperature as in the older versions now with 5G on or auto the phone burns battery faster thus making it over heat. I would also recommend going to data mode and putting in LTE never leave your phone on 5G for too long.

I hope that works for some folks. However, that hasn't helped in my situation. The only thing that consistently works is low power mode. Yesterday I kept it on normal mode and it was fine all day, this morning 30 min after pulling it off the charger it started getting hot and the screen went dim. No different apps, no different activity (just email, Facebook, a few crossword games, etc.)

Before having my phone replaced, I reset it and didn't restore a backup. I ran it with just email and the Apple apps for a couple of days. It still got hot so Apple replaced it.

Hello everyone! I had the same issue with my iPhone 12. Bought the unit Dec. 21, 2020. July 2021–I started experiencing unusual heat that I had to take off the original iPhone casing to cool it down. Up to September 2021, I still experience this and temperature warning went off the screen. Since warranty is nearly expiring, I brought in my unit to the nearest Apple Service Center last Nov. 13, 2021. Just 10 days, they confirmed that it really had an issue. Maybe the batch it was manufactured?

Anyway, they replaced my unit with brand new one with extended warranty period. Kudos to Apple for this.

My 12 pro was also running hot. I went to settings, battery and found Waze was on for many hours in the background. I went to settings, general, background app refresh and turned it off and it seems to be running better now. See if you have an app running in the background. I assume Waze or other apps will update for this IOS.

My 12 Pro was running hot yesterday into today with the battery quickly draining. Was fine the first few days I owned it. Primary difference yesterday was that I had it plugged into and connected to Carplay. That seems to be when the overheating and battery drain started. Went in and turned off most of the background app refresh apps only keeping some on. Also noted that Waze took up 30% of my battery usage running in the background -- I hadn't used Waze in weeks and not at all with the new phone purchased on the 23rd. Deleted Waze and rebooted phone. So far, so good. Phone hasn't overheated and seems to be running the same as the first few days that I had it.

Update - I've had my phone about a week and a half now, and I only experienced it running super hot once more after the first time. I did a hard restart, which stopped the heating issue. I also went into Background App Refresh and turn off a bunch of apps that didn't need it - it was enabled for a bunch of apps that it wasn't enabled for on my last phone, for some reason. Haven't had the same extremely hot issue since, although I've noticed during heavy use (like with GPS), the phone will get warm, within reason. Battery life is definitely less than my old iPhone 11, which is a known disappointment - I'm having to sit it on the charger earlier in the night than I had to previously. Hopefully this solves my overheating issue, or at least a temporary fix until a patch it out, if it's a software thing.

I tried Apple in London and in Dubai. The staff in London are brilliant so are the staff in Dubai ( not as much though).

Very helpful

my iphone 12 pro was really hot to handle when I used the 5G and then started to heat up when I use the WiFi as well.

After updating to 14.2 and switching it off for 5 minutes , do far so good even with 5G . It has been 3 days since the update. Try that and see

Good luck

ALL OF YOU having heating issues need to go to SETTINGS > BATTERY and look at what is using the most battery. I'm willing to bet that when your phone is heating up, it's some app that is running which shouldn't be running. The chances of your phone being defective are VERY LOW. This can happen with a new phone. Some apps haven't been optimized properly. Often, just deleting the offending apps and reinstalling them fixes this.

I’m actually beginning to have growing concern that my problem may have to do with an issue with my houses electric system. I have noticed a few lamps flickering lately, just a little.

And my phone seems to only get HOT like my original post said, “while charging”...but I took it to an outlet in the kitchen and it charged right up and only got very mildly warm.

Now I’m worried I may have to do to my house. 🤨

I got a new 12 Pro Max last week & have had the same overheating problems. Most of the time, it’s when it’s been plugged into CarPlay but not actually being used; the camera flash won’t work, nor the flashlight...says iPhone has to cool down before using. Would love a solution to this!

I have also had just abysmal battery life and it was taking HOURS to charge plugged-in, forget about it ever getting charged wirelessly! I have the same apps, same settings, same everything as on my 11 Pro Max and had no battery issues with it. Went and checked the battery in settings yesterday & for some reason, Lincoln Way (for my car) background activity had been the HUGE draw the previous 24 hours at 96%. The app was not open, had not been opened in days. It’s not one I can just delete, but I went in and changed the location settings of it and I hoped that would fix the battery drain trouble. It didn’t. Today when I went in and checked the battery, Lincoln + Alexa (background activity, hadn't been opened in days) had been the huge drain at 97%...wasn’t even listed yesterday and is a totally different app than Lincoln Way. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Changed the location settings of it and several hours later went back to check, it was still at 97-99%. I just deleted it & I’m hoping it helps. But I have NO idea why those apps would be running in the background and draining my battery like that! Like I said, same apps, same settings on previous iPhones, zero trouble. I would definitely suggest going into settings and seeing if you have an app that is draining you...it seems like after I deleted Lincoln + Alexa (like an hour ago) & plugged in my phone, it’s already charging ~MUCH~ faster. I hate not having that app & hate I had to change the location settings on Lincoln Way but it’s not worth having a dying phone all of the time!
