iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

Hello, I just bought an iPhone 12 today and I seem to be having the same issues. I began using the phone right away after it was set up, to download apps and make it more personalized as we all do, but I did experience it heating up right away, and extremely hot as well. This got me worried which led me to researching and it brought me here. Please let me know if you find a solution! That was too much money to spend on something that overheats in just a few minutes.

Had to replace my iPhone 12Pro after overheating and rapid drop off in battery health. Did reboots, lowered app usage, turn location tracking off. Charging using Apple's own Magsafe made situation worse. Gone back to charging using wire .

Changed cases from Otterbox to Native Union . Taken off screen protector to let cooler air spread. Sunny days are worst. Networks don't have answers. Apple Genius guy just keeps suggesting that I change phones.

On my second Pro in under 8 months. Even having to do cutouts on a non MagSafe case to let air in. Lots of workarounds tried but no reduction. MOST WORRYING IS THE RAPID FALLOUT IN BATTERY HEALTH ( Lithium ion batteries degrade at 1% per month for heavy users (lots of video streaming etc)

A14 chip was meant to optimise processing power but work cooler? What happened? Here is the list so far:

  1. Disabled Optimised Battery Charging
  2. Reduced the brightness of the device
  3. Periodically do full reset - made even worse as CPU got overheated trying to reinstall. Tried to do soft resets - no good.
  4. Reduced CPU load by disabling battery consuming apps
  5. Every update dutifully followed incl. iOS 14.6 installed / No improvements
  6. Turned of 5G

Besides completely turning off the phone and returning to my unused XS don't really know what else to do. Cannot use in car as it overheats on charging pad.

Apple over to you ?

I just fixed my overheating with the apple help. Check your battery usage I had outlook using 90% of the battery so you need to stop the outlook app I suggest turning off background app refresh for that app and see if it helps. For me it help a lot.

Now he said to uninstall the outlook app and Re install if you really need the Outlook in your phone.

For the most part my battery and heat have been fine, but I’ve had 2 incidents where the phone was pretty hot and battery drained super fast. One was earlier today, it was still on MagSafe charger and lost 11% battery in about 20-30 mins (while still charging!)

There wasn’t significant app activity during that time period, phone was basically idle and on the charger.

The other time I was lightly using it (pickup, check notifs, send a couple messages, set back down) and it just got really hot out of nowhere, ate up about 10% battery in 15 mins.

Both times restarting the phone cooled it down and went back to normal battery usage.

Hi. You seems to be very calm about phone getting to over hot and said it expected that will happen. So what about this...I use my iPhone 12 for Facebook Instagram mainly and I experienced this few times. It stops responding and block itself showing that phone is overheated. The phone feels very hot. I’ve made a photo of it and I hope you can see it. Thanks. Regards.

Dear iPhone Memebers,

Very Poor response from Apple service team!

With reference to iPhone 12 Pro overheating issue. Today had an appointment with apple genius service desk at dubai mall.

Have bitter experience from them, as per the apple the device overheating is a normal thing due to new chipset and is not accepting the defect of the product.

They simply restore the software and returned the product.

The device is still in same condition as before.

Its gets heated to above 42.9 centigrade on usage of camera for even 15 minutes and becomes very difficult to hold the device during that time.

As per the apple genius service staff , they suggested me to buy an apple silicon case from them , when I said it’s difficult to hold the phone during overheating in-order to hold the phone during overheating., as a solution. ( like using a glow to take hot utensils from microwave)

Really very genius apple service team!!!

I also have to have mine in low power mode if I don’t want it to get hot most of the time. Took it to the Genius Bar and they were going to swap out everything but the screen and the camera. Went to pick it up yesterday and they said there was an issue, and they ended up replacing the phone. Restored yesterday afternoon and as usual, when I got up this morning it was really hot within 10-15 minutes. These photos are from this morning. It is normal for this to happen if not on low power mode.

The temperature warning message 10 minutes after opening the brand new box is what makes me think it’s overheating.

Oh and the burn on my hand also makes me think the phone is over heating.

Know what else makes me think it’s overheating, when Apple support won’t help me when i chat them, and they won’t replace nor refund me a phone that’s been out of the box for an hour.

Ok so I have some test results. Apple sent me a replacement iPhone 12 Pro. I didn’t restore anything to it. Just powered it on and skipped through the setup screens.

It is 79F and sunny. Went outside with both this new phone and my original 12pro. Started taking pictures and videos about 30 seconds apart each. Within 5 mins the old iPhone kicked into 50% brightness lock. Couldn’t see a thing in plain sun.

the new phone took another 4 mins before it did the same thing. Consider the new phone has no widgets running and no sim card etc.

Both phones had the same slim case on.

I also took the temperature at the back of the phone and for both it was approx 123F. I never exposed the back of the phone to the sun. Only the front. I used a high end infrared laser thermometer to measure this.

I’d say this is a bust. 79F weather is not even close to hot summer days. We get 95F days here in Ohio sometimes. My beach travel is usually at 90F or more in Florida.

This is the 4th iPhone 12 I’ve tested personally that becomes unusable outdoors. Reach your own conclusions. I’m sending the new one back.

I know I’m late to this but my iPhone 12 Pro Max have been severely overheating these past few weeks and no it’s not cause of me using the charger. I don’t have it plugged in when it overheats. I don’t keep many apps open I just use my phone normally and I’ve gotten this a few times already. Is this normal? I’ve never gotten this on my iPhone 11 Pro Max and I use them both the same.

I’ve read somewhere on google that the magnets are causing over heating problems, it was on a site called Forbes it’s worth looking at but whether it’s true or not I’ve no idea but I was waiting for the iPhone 12 Pro Max to become available and since reading the over heating issue I’m holding back to see how this all pans out.

I’m sorry but I don’t work for apple, and I’m not blaming the adapter... I can’t tell you the exact answer every time so I am sorry if I don’t get it right the first time. How can it be a design flaw when being put under so much stress for the first time? You guys will notice a difference in temperature later on in use of this iPhone I believe
