iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

It seems I MAY have solved the problem for MY phone 12. By going to the Settings menu and then Battery. You can determine which apps are utilizing the majority of the battery. To my understanding, some apps may not be fully compatible with iOS 14 yet and are running full tilt in the background, sucking battery life and causing heat. By closing these apps after using (swipe up from bottom and then grab app window and swipe up to close) and making sure the specific apps are not running my phone seems to be working as normal. Please give it a try and post to reply to let me know if this works.

I’m lost, because you said you set it up from a backup. For this then, try resetting it one last time and set it up completely new. Without installing any apps or restoring any data, charge it to 100%, and I suggest charging via port if you can. Just try using it for a little bit after that, if it doesn’t get too hot, try installing a couple of apps. If the issue does persist, talk with ONLINE Apple Support and they will give you some options.

Yes, with iOS 14.2, there were many reports of battery issues, and I believe it may have affected more devices than others. For instance, I personally have not had any issues in my iPad or any of my iPhones since the update or before that, whereas many others say the update drastically affected battery life. It may have been patched by Apple (I’m not very sure about this), but I do know that Apple sent a security update iOS 14.2.1 exclusively for iPhone 12 models. The existing issues may have lingered even after the update on some of the affected devices. I would highly suggest doing some or all of the following. Delete any suspicious applications, clear browsing history and all website data, optimize the Settings, and if necessary, Reset All settings or Erase All Content and Settings and start from scratch after the update. And if you’re using a SIM card on your iPhone 12 that you had on your older iphone, contact your carrier and inform them that you need a SIM card for the 5G iPhone 12. After that, all that can be done is talk to Apple Support and wait for the next security/software update.

There is a lot of chat saying this is normal. The truth is , this is far from normal. Your phone feeling warm after watching video for 10 minutes may be normal. A phone that overheats to the point where it can burn a babies skin is not normal. Some folks have said unless you get a warning on your screen, the phone is ok. This is not true. My phone was hot enough to cause a burn to human skin and there was no warning on the screen. When reported to Apple they asked if I was injured. I was not injured, I told them. They said we have to replace your phone. It is on its way.

Thanks, I actually just did speak with Apple Support again. I will now try what they adviced:

1) backup the device on my Apple computer

2) restore it to factory settings

3) set ut up as new once again

4) test use it for a few hours to see if problems still persist

5) if it still overheats etc. contact Apple Support again and then have it taken for repair (it’s under warranty) or replacement

Hope this helps others who are experiencing the same issue.

I had this problem with MagSafe, ended up replacing an iPhone 12, MagSafe and a case. I got told by apple that the coils/magnets were not outputting the right watts for charging, because I was not getting anything above 4watts using a 20w brick.

after My second MagSafe I ended up returning it. Surprisingly enough got the MagSafe duo and that’s been working fine for me, my second iPhone 12 replacement unit has not heated at all on me ever since I had that incident back in November were it shut down after frequent usage.

right now the MagSafe duo and the iPhone 12 work normally but it took a lot of long sessions with apple to figure it out.

they don’t read these sections by the way, these are more of a collective solution from users to apple problems...

I have a 12mini and it’s doing the same thing just sitting and being idle drains the battery flat in four hrs or less. It gets real hot as well. Not even on the charger but just sitting idle in standby. All background app refresh is off as well. So today I decided to run a test. I shut cellular off and it’s been sitting idle and it’s currently at 93% from 9:30 this morning when I took it off the charger at 109%. Phone hasn’t gotten hot either I am thinking it’s a hardware issue with the modem.

Hi Guys. I read a lot of comments and I would like to say a few things about this situation. A month ago I upgraded my iphone 8 to iPhone 12 pro. After a few hours I was using basic apps like map and playing music at background then I used FaceTime and after 2 minutes phone locked up and warning says this iPhone needs to cool down. I went apple same day they said your phone restoring your settings from old phone to new phone it’s normal to get overheating and they said wait 3-4 days you will not have that problem again. So I waited 1 week and during that week phone was still getting overheated and keep saying iPhone needs to cool down. I thought this is not normal because even my phone 8 i’ve never had that problem and I paid $1100 bucks for iphone 12 pro I couldn’t believe that happened. So I went apple store again and i said problem is continuing they replaced my phone and replaced phone had same issue again. I went apple store again i said don’t give me replaced phone give me a new phone from the box. Firs they didn’t accept but then I convinced them and they give me a new phone from the box. After I got new phone it’s happened again again and again. After I experienced all this things I thought iphone 12 pro case is made by still and it’s getting hot easily. Because my friend has iphone 12 and case made by aluminum he never had this problem. If you think you change your phone it’s not a solution this iPhone 12 pro series has a problem because of stainless steel case. Today it’s happened again and i just searched google then i came and read yours comments. I hope this help you!

I seem to have solved the problem with the iPhone 12 Max that was overheating and draining the battery. I did a hard shutdown and let the phone fully charge without rebooting. I restarted the fully charged phone 2 hours later, and removed and re-installed a few apps I was suspicious of, which ran in the background. I also turned off background app refresh on all but the most critical apps which needed to run in the background. I did another hard reboot.

Since then, after two days of operation, the overheating/battery draining problem went away. The problem has not recurred. Should it happen again, I will post to this group. If not, I will consider the problem solved.
