iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

Hello, dblggogs,

I see that you have an overheating iPhone 12 Pro, Sometimes you will find your device is overheating while charging. You should remove the charger or avoid overcharging it. Sometimes it's the wrong charger and adaptor, and sometimes battery issues may cause an overheating issue. You should be careful while charging it. Also, As we mentioned earlier, Background App Refresh can contribute to your iPhone overheating, So go to Settings and then choose General to make sure it's turned off for unnecessary apps. If it's still too hot, go to the app switcher to see all the apps you've got open. If the problem persists then Contact Apple Support here:

Have a good day,

Hi, I purchased my iPhone 12 Pro on the 23rd. At first I didn’t have any heating issues but 2 days later i started experiencing a lot of overheating.. keep in mind I only use my phone for phone calls and text messaging no games or other apps. Anywho, once I started feeling my phone at noticeably high temperatures and using minimal energy by only using iMessage it raised a few concerns. So I went and have been tampering with some settings testing usage since then. Thankfully for myself my easiest and only solution so far is disabling iCloud on Notes & disabling background refresh on all apps.

I know this shouldn’t be full fix.. I’m unsure what the problem is however fir the last 24 hours my phone battery and temperature has been normal.

hopefully an IOS update will fix this bug if it’s a bug...

For the most part my battery and heat have been fine, but I’ve had 2 incidents where the phone was pretty hot and battery drained super fast. One was earlier today, it was still on MagSafe charger and lost 11% battery in about 20-30 mins (while still charging!)

There wasn’t significant app activity during that time period, phone was basically idle and on the charger.

The other time I was lightly using it (pickup, check notifs, send a couple messages, set back down) and it just got really hot out of nowhere, ate up about 10% battery in 15 mins.

Both times restarting the phone cooled it down and went back to normal battery usage.

Update. So I spoke with Apple tech support again. I followed their recommendation of turning off some apps that I don't use, turn down brightness of screen and then turn off phone and restart after 1 min. I did exactly what they suggested and all seems to be working fine. I charge on a wireless charger at night and in the morning the phone is cool and charged. Battery is holding charge. Now this is all working on wireless connection. I now plan to use the 5G and see what happens........stay tuned.......

It appears you've made your decision, so return the phone and move on.

We have one iPhone 12. For the first few days it ran warm and I did what I suggested and found out our Tile App was running the battery non-stop. I deleted the Tile app, reinstalled the tile app and the phone is running cool as a cucumber now.

I have 12 Pro Max coming next weekend. I'll see if any apps do the same and do what I did with the 12 and not worry about this.

But you should definitely return the phone since you've determined it's the phone.

I changed some settings to help battery life and did the reboot as above 2 days ago and it seems to have remedied the problem. I did not use the phone much yesterday. After my original post I turned off all apps then did a full recharge. At 9:30 pm it was100% charged and I unplugged it from charging. In the morning at 5:00 am just sitting with all applications closed and with no use while I slept the battery was down to 86%. I took 5G off auto and stopped letting google maps monitor location. I then did a Reboot Force Restart and charged it to 100% slowly by attaching it to my computer. Since then battery life has performed as expected yesterday. Lightly used for the past 4 hours battery is still at 99%. I will use it more today and see if the hot battery problem is solved. The post by Ravenrain13 sounds like it will be OK due to the Reboot Force Restart.

If you buy a brand new iPhone 11 from Apple, it will already have iOS 14 on it, so that plan won't work for you. Plus not staying current with iOS is not a good idea. You'll miss necessary security updates and you'll not be able to use features which are introduced in updates which you may actually enjoy using.

What you need to do is figure out what is causing heat on your 12. As I've already mentioned, neither our iPhone 12 or 12 Pro Max are having ANY heating issues whatsoever. I figured out when we first got them, YouTube was causing an issue. I deleted the App, reinstalled the app and boom, no more heating of any kind.

Things like this are rarely an issue with the device. They are almost ALWAYS caused by an app which is causing the issue. If you were to restore you phone back to factory, without apps in your app library, you'd most assuredly have a phone which never has any issue. In fact, it's one the recommended options when confronted with an issue like this. One would then bring apps over slowly, testing along the way.

Just got a replacement unit that took about 2 weeks to get here, so far after massive multitasking minimal heating unlike the previous last couple of times.

As a matter of fact the entire iphone feels different since they might have had sent me an unlocked model since I got to choose which carrier I was using and the interface from manually setup was different from my previous versions. I know someone mentioned a redesign was ridiculous but I do feel I got a new improved batch In my honest opinion.

It's not going to explode, and if it detects it is getting too warm it will shut itself down.

If you don't like how hot it gets, you can try to investigate why that's the case (usually an app is to blame, check Settings -> Battery) or, if you purchased it at the Apple Online Store and receive it between November 10 and December 25, 2020, or purchase it at an Apple retail store over that same period, you can return it through January 8, 2021 for a full refund.

And you're sure you have 5G service in your area? If you have the phone set to 5G and there isn't 5G service available, the phone will be working overtime trying to connect to a band that may not be available. That will absolutely cause heat.

We have phones which are 5G capable. But 5G service has not been rolled out to many many locations yet.

Even when 5G is unavailable, the old SIM card will still be rendered incompatible since it will continuously keep searching for 5G. I don’t know if you can turn that off, but I do know that if you do turn it off, it will still be an issue. Just simply contact your carrier and they should give you a new and compatible SIM card free of charge and most definitely with the same number, if you’re worried about your contacts that is. Then before switching out the SIM cards, take the old one out (maybe put the new one in before, but I suggest after), and then reset your device and set it up as new. Then if you decided to put your new SIM card after, put it in now.

I had the the same issues with my new IPhone 12 the overheating became intense. I went to the Verizon store before ( I thought I would try them before contacting Apple) they suggested eliminating a couple of apps I had like Bitmoji which I don’t use anymore anyway and Newsmax which for some reason I had just put on my phone that day and had nothing to do with the overheating because I hadn’t used it yet but I deleted both and that same day the Overheating ceased.I don’t know what to say i guess just see if there are any apps that you are not using and just delete them. I also deleted any and all old messages and missed phone calls, photos in my iCloud etc. anything I didn’t use or need. My phone stopped overheating. Not even warm. The battery is still a problem! I completely charge it ( it does charge up pretty quick) but after using for an hour or so I loose 50 to 60% of the charge if not more. So that’s a pain.
