iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

Hello, I just bought an iPhone 12 today and I seem to be having the same issues. I began using the phone right away after it was set up, to download apps and make it more personalized as we all do, but I did experience it heating up right away, and extremely hot as well. This got me worried which led me to researching and it brought me here. Please let me know if you find a solution! That was too much money to spend on something that overheats in just a few minutes.

I bought my iphone 12 pro yesterday. Even i am having same issue. I bought my phone. Setup was complete and i went to sleep. Morning i took the phone and it was hot & the battery was below 15%. I switch off the phone, charged and switched on. After some more minutes it started to heat little bit, but not too much. But the point is that, its heating up.

This also happened to me. My iPhone 12 Pro was already done setting up, everything from my previous backup loaded. I was doing some light browsing the night I got it, and my phone got extremely hot. Like nothing I've experienced with previous iPhones - the metal bumper felt like a metal handle from a pan left on the stove, and the back was also very hot. I turned my phone off, waited a few seconds, and turned it back on, and that seemed to fix it. However just now, I noticed my phone was getting a bit warmer than usual, so I did the same thing. I have a case on it now, so I'm not sure if it got as hot as that first night and the case was buffering the heat I felt. After restarting, my phone feels fine.

My guess is something is getting stuck in the background, and the phone latches onto that and goes into overdrive until it's forcefully disconnected. Only a guess, but it's very annoying, and it makes me worry about the already short battery life...

Iphone 12 pro is getting super hot even running normally.

Never experience this issue with previous apple phones.

After getting it, I thought its being hot because its creating backup and stuff, but now i have come to a conclusion that there is a major defect in the phone, hence it is heating up quite rapidly.

Furthermore, the battery life is terrible.

Disappointed.

My iPhone 12 Pro gets notably warm with very light use. No, not while plugged in. I am referring to regular use while not plugged into a charger. I have 5G turned off and it still does this. The moment I start using it, my fingers feel warmth radiating from the middle-left area of the phone. The right side feels cool to the touch by comparison. Again, this is with very light usage. I'm on the latest version of iOS. I had the 11 Pro before this and it did not have this issue. To be clear, it doesn't overheat, or get HOT, but notably warm. And it keeps getting warmer with every few minutes of use. Very noticeable and quite distracting to be honest.

Hi,

Brand new iPhone 12 Pro delivered on Friday October 23 (release day). I'm still waiting for the case I ordered so I didn't set up the phone until last night. The new case doesn't come until tomorrow, so I'm still not really using the phone (No Sim Card in it). I did spend a little time checking out phone and finishing the setup today and it was physically hot to the touch on the back of the phone. I noticed the phone got hot very quickly when using the camera app. The other thing I noticed is the smell: Literally smelt like epoxy or glue when it was warm.

I'm sure Apple is aware and will make it right.

I wonder if it’ll turn out the X55 modem is the problem for over heating phones, I have read somewhere that it isn’t as battery friendly as the X60 modem or as power efficient and presumably the X60 will go into the iPhone 13’s so I wonder if Apple will have to dial back the speed of the X55 to overcome the heat build up problems, I’m sure I recall Samsung having a similar problem with one of its modems a few years back with over heating

I wasn’t even considering 5G has anything to do with over heating as plenty of people have stated their 5G is switched off, I know using 5G can make the phone hot but this problem seems something completely different as turning off 5G makes no difference, I really want to order the iPhone 12 Pro Max but I’m holding back a while to see how this goes first

This usually happens when you restore from back-up. iOS will take awhile to re-index a lot of data (indexes are not included in the backup) and optimize it. Sometimes it takes a day or two to complete - depending on how much data you have, how much third-party applications are installed, etc. And as the optimization process requires a lot of resource, the device tends to be heat up.

Wait for 48 hours and see if the behavior continues. If it does, call Apple Support for some instructions on how to troubleshoot it.

Good luck!

Yea I can agree that usually will happen when trying to restore from I cloud. Now my situation I already restored from backup I’m using any app for more then 10 minutes and my phone is over heating temperature lock comes up during the middle of a call and it locks can use till it cools down. Anyways apple got me in to trade which was not an easy task at all because I bought the phone online picked up at store and I was on the upgrade. I sat there for 6 hours and left with an iPhone SE LOL something is not right here haha. It was a huge mess and they were looking at me like hmm please iPhone has no flaws it was embarrassing and I left with 1,400 less money then I did at the beginning of the day luckily this lady took over and helped me out. I’m not sure right now sort of disappointed that this was supposed to be the best phone but I’m starting to miss my 11pro max. Never over heated lasted for hrs of use. If you have this problem good luck and prosperity

Hi, I purchased my iPhone 12 Pro on the 23rd. At first I didn’t have any heating issues but 2 days later i started experiencing a lot of overheating.. keep in mind I only use my phone for phone calls and text messaging no games or other apps. Anywho, once I started feeling my phone at noticeably high temperatures and using minimal energy by only using iMessage it raised a few concerns. So I went and have been tampering with some settings testing usage since then. Thankfully for myself my easiest and only solution so far is disabling iCloud on Notes & disabling background refresh on all apps.

I know this shouldn’t be full fix.. I’m unsure what the problem is however fir the last 24 hours my phone battery and temperature has been normal.

hopefully an IOS update will fix this bug if it’s a bug...
