iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

After my phone overheated Thursday night and shut off until Friday morning my phone came on but the camera was jacked up. Took it in yesterday for repair/replacement and they replaced it. They were not sure why it was heating up that much, and also more confused how "condensation" built up on all three lens. Also the LiDar went out as well. I got a new phone tho...so that was good (at no cost).

volume up

volume down

hold the menu button until phone shuts off.

(Not at the same time)

I’ve done it 3 evenings in a row before plugging it in to charge.

Also, sometimes it’s none of the above reasons but just as simple as a faulty device - like the one i was sold - which has been taken back to Apple to be investigated.

I am currently happy with the service I’ve recently received from Apple Support and recommend that anyone with the overheating problem contact Apple Support and book a time to open a case.

I am not happy with the way the reseller has acted when I’ve informed them about the problems with the device and I will thus take the issue further to the regulating bodies re. my rights as a customer.

Apple Support has been much more supportive and helpful than the reseller.

I'm am also experiencing a problem with my iPhone 12 Pro Max overheating. My screen will dim to where I could barely see anything on the screen. I couldn't figure out why as the brightness setting was a full. I came across an article which said that screen dimming was a way of saving power to protect the phone from overheating. I do not use the phone in an overly hot environment. It's in an Apple case and I generally run only a single app at once (I don't keep background apps running when I switch apps). I only charge it by plugging into my iMac USB. When the phone gets hot and the screen dims, I power off the phone for about 15 seconds and then turn it back on. The screen is back to normal and the phone has cooled down.

I will be contacting Apple support...

Oke so this is my story and it end positive for me.

my iphone 12 pro max in encased with ali express magsafe case, aluminum camera protect thingy and lenses and ali express screen protector. I use my phone daily as navigation. Got ali express magnetic wireless charger on 12v 5 amp usb c plug. I drive roughly 8 hours a day and most of the time phone is charging.

apps I use a data manager app, Sygic for navigation with dashcam feature enabled, flitsmeister on background and either watch youtube/listen on background with Alook browser or listen to online radio and personal hotspot for my work pda as got dualsim active.

so now you got picture how I use my phone I will explain my experience erice at moment.

iOS below 14.5 was horrible experience. Phone constantly overheating and to keep it cool I had turn on full air cooling on my car and blow it hard on my phone. At end of day battery drained to 60% even its charging most of the time. Phone overheat in no time when I move airco or turned it off and was no fun in hart of winter force use airco just for your phone.

so iOS 14.5 i saw huge improvement. I do need keep bit of air flow aimed on the phone but down from full airco blow I can put airco off and leave heat on neutral. This keeps phone in accapatble level. At end of day battery was 96%. So this was huge different.

What makes ME think it’s overheating is … THE PHONE ALERT SAYS IPHONE IS OVEREHEATED… The alert remains until the phone cools down.

Here, I fixed it for you. When you say "us" you are speaking for people whom you don't know. There are many here whose phones are not displaying the temperature warning, but are warm and some are interpreting the warmth as overheating, which is incorrect.

Of course your phone would have overheated if you get the warning. And you should take the phone to your Apple Store Genius Bar for evaluation. My iPhone 12 Pro Max, has absolutely no issues with heat. And I stream videos and music a lot.

I agree! Limiting my background app refresh seems to have helped tremendously. I also decided when I want to use the camera (taking lots of photos) I am just going to put my phone on airplane mode or low power mode, to limit additional processes in background. I didn't change my 5G Auto setting and it seems to be working just fine.

Had to replace my iPhone 12Pro after overheating and rapid drop off in battery health. Did reboots, lowered app usage, turn location tracking off. Charging using Apple's own Magsafe made situation worse. Gone back to charging using wire .

Changed cases from Otterbox to Native Union . Taken off screen protector to let cooler air spread. Sunny days are worst. Networks don't have answers. Apple Genius guy just keeps suggesting that I change phones.

On my second Pro in under 8 months. Even having to do cutouts on a non MagSafe case to let air in. Lots of workarounds tried but no reduction. MOST WORRYING IS THE RAPID FALLOUT IN BATTERY HEALTH ( Lithium ion batteries degrade at 1% per month for heavy users (lots of video streaming etc)

A14 chip was meant to optimise processing power but work cooler? What happened? Here is the list so far:

  1. Disabled Optimised Battery Charging
  2. Reduced the brightness of the device
  3. Periodically do full reset - made even worse as CPU got overheated trying to reinstall. Tried to do soft resets - no good.
  4. Reduced CPU load by disabling battery consuming apps
  5. Every update dutifully followed incl. iOS 14.6 installed / No improvements
  6. Turned of 5G

Besides completely turning off the phone and returning to my unused XS don't really know what else to do. Cannot use in car as it overheats on charging pad.

Apple over to you ?

There is no doubt the iPhone 12 Pro and pro max are suffering from and internal design or software issue causing the screen to dim to 25 % with brightness is 100% and or overheating alert pops up ! It’s a shame I went to apple 3 times with my 12 pro max the 4 time they replaced the phone it seems to be ok but I haven’t been in sun yet due to weather has been cloudy and raining for days !! Lol my other phone would not last even 2 mins in direct sun when driving it’s crazy cause I use maps and other apps critical to my job !! My iPhone 11 never gave my any issue like this and I am sad I have a 1300 dollar phone that overheats in 1 min ??? Help apple make this right for all of us suffering with this issue !!
