iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

I contacted apple and they called me to try to find the issue if it’s software or hardware. They told me back up my iCloud and do a content and setting reset. Afterwards it turned back on I just reloaded my iCloud and everything was back to how I had it set up and heating has remained to a minimal for now. Still gets warm after a few minutes of minor use. I’m expecting a phone call form them on the 27th of November to check in and see if that fixed the problem to further proceed. I’ll keep you guys updated when I know more

I just received my 12 pro max last week and am noticing VERY fast overheating to the device and the Apple USB-C plug when charging. Like within 15-30 seconds of plugging in to charge and it’s all hot. But while I’m using the device it stays totally cool, but this type of heat while charging cannot be healthy for the device. What gives? I’m afraid to charge my phone. As mentioned:

12 pro max

Apple USB-C plug

Apple USB-C cable

HOT within 15-20 seconds of charging

Stays cool while in use(not charging).

🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m telling you it’s iOS 14 causing these problems it is iOS 14 iPhone 7 never got hot on 12 or 13

Which is exactly what you would expect if there are apps that were not updated for iOS 14 doing bad things on your phone. We’ve seen this happen with each and every iOS update and it often takes a bit to narrow down what apps they are and for their makers to get things sorted.

Remember to check Settings -> Battery for an idea of which apps may be at fault; navigation apps in particular seem to be using a lot more power this time around.

I have an iPhone 12 pro max. Overheats to the point that the phone actually states it needs to cool down. This seems to happen when I’m in my car that has CarPlay. Even when I’m not using maps it overheats. I disabled CarPlay from car and now just use maps on phone and it overheated today. It’s a little ridiculous to pay $1k for a phone that can’t use CarPlay or maps.

Same here! It was hot when i set it up but I guess that's normal so I let it slide. But then once it was done I was using it for just normal browsing and I felt that it was getting warm. Got me worried. Am charging it now and it's super super hot. It's only been 2 days with this 12 Pro Max. I was using a 12 Pro and it was totally fine with no overheating but exchanged it with a Max since I wanted a bigger screen. I don't know if this is just a Max issue but it's worrying. I hope Apple resolves this asap. :(

My iPhone 12 Pro is getting very hot when charging it on the MagSafe charger, and so much so that it didn’t charge at all last night. I’m using the recommended clear case and the Apple adaptor. Was using Alarm Clock app. Have Background App Refresh turned off for everything. Now I have to charge it without the MagSafe charger.

I know nothing about phones, but I know FOR SURE that this is a hardware/device/apple problem, and is in no way caused by the user. For me, this happened for the first time yesterday; it has already done it twice more since then.

I have a phone stand thingy that i keep on my desk at work. This is where my phone sat, totally untouched, for four straight hours. When I was going to lunch, I grabbed my phone and immediately said “holy crap”. It was hot. I had to look around my desk because I thought I must have put it next to a heater or the CPU or something else that would cause it to be so hot, but nope, it was just the phone itself. Just for clarification, today is December 4th, I bought my iPhone 12 on November 19th. Just 15 days and I’m having problems. Why would it overheat when no one has touched it for four hours? What is causing this to happen and is it going to blow up while I’m sleeping with it next to my face?! I didn’t have an excessive amount of apps running. I will change my apps refresh settings once I’m done writing this novel, but for over a grand, and apples “new and improved” device, this should not even be a topic of conversation. Watch, we’re all gonna see the 13 come out in a few months and one of the big fixes will be: “improvements made in regards to overheating devices, no more worrying about it spontaneously combusting!! Only $1,600!!”. And they’ll act like they’re doing us a favor when it shouldn’t have happened in the first place lollllll.

It would be worth calling Apple Support prior to going in to a store if you do not want to wait for a replacement. Over the phone, you can ask them to perform remote diagnostics, which may be able to give you further insight into your battery settings. You can also ask them to share your iPhone screen and show them your battery settings, as well as your app usage.

If this still doesn't satisfy your issue, you can take it to a store and possibly get it replaced under hardware warranty if verified in some way in person.

Generally, if you are a light user, your phone typically shouldn't experience heating issues.

I return mine. You have 30 days to return and get your money back. 12 pro max is getting very hot and this is not normal. Does not matter how you charge and way you talk 5G or 4G. To expensive to have this kind of problems. My phone get so hot red temperature thermostat show on my screen telling me phone is very hot and I can not use it till cool off. Do I need this?? I have Samsung 5G with my second number, never ever problem with anything.

It seems I MAY have solved the problem for MY phone 12. By going to the Settings menu and then Battery. You can determine which apps are utilizing the majority of the battery. To my understanding, some apps may not be fully compatible with iOS 14 yet and are running full tilt in the background, sucking battery life and causing heat. By closing these apps after using (swipe up from bottom and then grab app window and swipe up to close) and making sure the specific apps are not running my phone seems to be working as normal. Please give it a try and post to reply to let me know if this works.

Exactly me too. Wasn’t haven’t too many problems with my 6 plus. Wanted the better camera. The over heating is so random. iPhone charger, other charger, couldn’t get magnet charger (not Apple) to work. I thought it was something to do with charger being plugged in to a power strip but, it’s doing it no matter how I charge or if I’m not charging or if it’s sitting in my lap. Turned off background refresh like one person suggested, still hot. Then randomly it won’t be hot. 🤷‍♀️

I got a new SIM card when I bought the phone with T-Mobile to use 5g same number but the old one was lte. This happens even if I turn off 5g and use exclusively lte. What I have not tried is taking off the SIM card and using wifi alone. Appreciate all the ideas so far Apple will need to fix that. Is there a way submit a group complaint? Or maybe get together in social media? Lots of techs have tried to help to with no avail
