iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

Bring it back and exchange it - there are many people who claim this is a software problem, but the question is why isn't all iPhone 12 Pro phones having this issue? They've sold many of these phones and you'd think there would be thousands of complaints by now online.

I did two hard resets and nothing improved. It never charged wirelessly for me. I put it on a Qi compliant Mophie puck and another Qi charger and the same thing happens. It charges for a second and then stops.

I contacted Apple support and they said to bring it back and that it was not a software bug. Not that I expect Apple to admit it but if it is not a software bug then you'll be very sorry that you did not exchange it within the warranty period. Make sure you at the very least document this with Apple Support before your exchange period expires.

My new Iphone 12 would not charged wirelessly on a charger that always worked with my iphone 8 plus and still does. I read answers from this post that said to restart the iphone. Once I did that it would charge. However the next time I put it back on the charger it would not work. So now the only way to use the wireless charger is to restart it every time I want to use the wireless charger. Seems like this is a software issue and Apple should fix it. If anyone has the same problem or another way to fix it please let us know. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem. Especially since the Magsafe charger seems to damage the iphone silicone case, which I have and other issues.

First, I have to preface my comments by saying that I have my 12 in an Otterbox Commuter case, which should not have an issue since I've had the same style case on all my prior iPhones.

After reading some other articles on this, one of the things that I'm trying (and I've tried the resetting with mixed results) is turning off the Optimized Battery Charging feature under Battery Health. So far I haven't run into issues (but it's been less than a day).

In my case, my charging issues are with wireless charging in my 2020 Tiguan and my Ubiolabs charging station at home. Both were working without issue on my X, but have been intermittent at best with the 12.

Also, I use a Tzumi wireless charging pad at work and it has worked fine with my 12 even before I made any changes.

I'll post updates on my workaround after some testing.

I hope they find a fix for this soon.

I was having the same issue where I had to reboot my phone in order to use a wireless charger. Apple support was able to help me resolve the issue, at least it appears to be resolved (it’s only been one day so far). This is what Apple support had me do.

  1. Press the volume up button once (only this button should be pressed)
  2. Press the down button once (only this button should be pressed)
  3. Press and hold the power button until the phone automatically shuts off (only this button should be pressed and ignore the power off slider and keep the button pressed until the phone automatically shuts off)
  4. Turn the phone back on and charging works repeatedly.

I hope this works for others too.

Time will say. Resetting network setting did nothing for my Mophie 3 in 1 charger.

Basically, my situation is:

  1. Mophie 3 in 1 stand, iPhone 12 Pro won't charge with Apple silicon case on it, it will charge without it. This charger used to charge iPhone XS with silicone case without any issues
  2. Logitech QI charger - no issues
  3. Samsung QI charger - no issues

It's hard to imagine hardware issue. If one Apple certified charger doesn't work properly anymore with MagSafe Phone / Case, I believe many other chargers using the similar coil alignment or charging chip may not work either, that's why the results are mixed across the board. For "stand" type chargers or the one where your phone is in fixed position, such issues can be more pronounced.

People talk about QI charging tech being old etc. It's old but Apple has changed charging design dramatically for 12, it literally added extra magnets, so it's not 1:1 comparison anymore.

I'll test my wife's phone on Mophie 3 in 1 charger once she gets to it and it may help isolate it better.

Anyway, if it's software - Apple will fix it. If it's defect on some units, Apple will replace the units. If it's a design flaw, may need to find the chargers that work for you.

Glad I came upon this thread! My phone was mysteriously not charging on two different style Qi chargers I have.

I thought it may have been the case so I took it off, but same problem.

I turned off the phone and turned it on - now it will charge again.

This is a software issue they need to fix ASAP. I never had a single issue with my iPhone 11 Pro.

preordered my iPhone 12 Pro 128GB at 5:00 am on 10/16/20. Received it on 10/23/20. Put the same case on it that I’ve used with my X, XS Max and 11 Pro (UAG Monarch) and attempted to use the same Samsung Wireless Fast Charger I’ve used with all of them. It would light up, then start blinking. Tried it with a slimmer case. Nope. Tried it without a case. Nope. Bought 2 different wireless chargers. Nope. Received a replacement device today. Still doesn’t wirelessly charge.

Unbelievable.

Well, after talking to someone at the Apple Store and doing more testing with other QI chargers I've come to the conclusion (at least in my case) my Ubio Labs charging station is the issue. Whether its the location of the coil, wattage output or the surface area I don't know for sure. The puck chargers I have at home from tzumi and vinsic (both relatively inexpensive ones) all work (though sometimes I had to adjust the phone's placement to find the sweet spot).

As for my Tiguan, once I positioned the phone as far in and to the left as I could, it's been charging fine without issue.

Hope this helps, but I agree with the comments made here that there should have been more testing done by Apple. This many folks experiencing the same issues is a definite red flag.
