iPhone 12 pro not charging with MagSafe charger

The magnet works fine but nothing happens. No charge. Why won’t MagSafe charger work with brand new iPhone 12 Pro?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

Hi papijam23,

Thanks for posting in Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having some issues charging your iPhone 12 Pro using the MagSafe charger. There are some great instructions here:

How to use your MagSafe Charger with iPhone 12 models

Is there another charger and power source to try? If so, does this only happen with the MagSafe charger? Try the applicable steps from If your iPhone or iPod touch won't charge, then test for the issue again.

Have a great day!

following up from my last post. In the Apple website it says:

  • As with other wireless chargers, your iPhone or MagSafe Charger might get slightly warmer while your iPhone charges. To extend the lifespan of your battery, if the battery gets too warm, software might limit charging above 80 per cent.

So what I did was a bit of the best ideas

  • I’ve hard reset the iphone 12 Pro by pressing and releasing quickly -the “volume up”, than the same for “volume down” and then holding the right button until the Apple logo appears.
  • than I waited until my phone’s battery was below 80% before charging ( I charged mine at 69%) to try and avid triggering the overheating thing from the Apple software.

And once I did that it started to work!! The battery level was going up and seems to be working fine for now. :)

my gear involved was iPhone12 Pro and the new Apple MagSafe charger

I have experienced the exact problem and through troubleshooting IDed that it was indeed the phone that was not accepting the charge. That is, the Apple charging block and MagSafe charging head were functioning. I followed the recommended fix (volume up / volume down / hold side button to reboot) and the MagSafe was functioning correctly again. My question is, will this be able to be repaired through iOS updates? It appears that it is a hardware / firmware issue and I wonder if such has been fixed in follow-on production runs. I would consider this to be a manufacturer's defect subject to the warranty terms.

Remove any case from the device and then press and quickly release the volume up button, then do the same for the volume down button. Follow up by pressing the side button, and hold until the display suddenly shuts off about 10 seconds. Keep holding the side button and release when the device turns back onto its Apple boot screen.

then try to charge it again. Hope this helps

This problem started about a week ago for me. I have a workaround but I hope it's fixed soon.

Workaround: Hard restart the phone (Volume Up, Volume Down, Hold Side Button until Restart) WHILE IT'S ON THE MAGSAFE CHARGER. LEAVE IT ON MAGSAFE THE WHOLE TIME YOU WANT IT TO CHARGE.

If I take it off the charger even for a few seconds and put it back on, it will not charge. I get the charge signal in the top right and the big circle charge indicator and they stay on the whole time, but the charge percentage will go down, not up, over time.

Took it to the Apple Store and they wiped my phone and gave it back to me and told me it's now charging, but even on a fresh IOS 14.3 install the problem remained. I plan to use the workaround until 14.4 is released. If it doesn't work then I'll take it into the Apple Store and ask for a replacement as my phone is covered by AppleCare.

Update to my own prior post (< 1 hr ago): Decided to try one more reboot of iPhone 12 Pro. Now MagSafe Charger DOES work. Tried the prior charger -- that works also. Apple engineers remotely downloaded my iPhone Logs to find out more about issue.

I guess I'll just reboot whenever this happens again and hope a future software update fixes the behavior.
