The magnet works fine but nothing happens. No charge. Why won’t MagSafe charger work with brand new iPhone 12 Pro?

Remove any case from the device and then press and quickly release the volume up button, then do the same for the volume down button. Follow up by pressing the side button, and hold until the display suddenly shuts off about 10 seconds. Keep holding the side button and release when the device turns back onto its Apple boot screen.
then try to charge it again. Hope this helps
The steps work - but I still can't use a case and charge via magSafe.
There are worse things in life, but we all paid top dollar for this phone. We should loose functionality from iPhone X (with the same case) has available
I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max 128GB AT&T, all of a sudden today (with iOS 14.2.1) MagSafe does not work, with the genuine Apple Clear MagSafe Case and Apple genuine MagSafe charger. I did the reset twice that you guys mentioned, did not work when connected to my brand new MacBook Pro 15" with latest software installed. I reboot it again and plugged it into the 20W adaptor (also used to charge MacBook) and it did not work. I think I am just going to return the entire phone, MagSafe Charger, and the compatible case. One issue into spending $1,200.00+ is not worth having to play button games to just get a charger to work. Anyone else still having this issue?
So here's my update since I got this thing four days ago. I clearly can't use it with my hard drive charger, one down. I cant charge it with any adapter, two down. I can't charge it to my 2018 Macbook Air because it's not USB-C, three down. It does charge on my GFs 2020 Macbook Air (which does have USB-C ports), but it's not accessible at all times, four down. My VW recognizes it as a MagSafe Charger with the use of an adapter but it doesn't charge, five down.
This is like when the knockoff chargers we bought at the gas station, market, Ross, Marshalls, TJMaxxx, and the phone said it didn't recognize it as an accessory. Apple is gonna have to put out another update to fix this.
Oh and you know what's so funny about all this? The knockoff adapters I'm using, actually work with the **** cord that came with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. SMH
The same issue with IPhone Pro 12 Max, just bought 2 days ago. It helped me, this button game. However we’ll see how long it will be work. Anyhow I’m agree with people, who mentioned, that we payed Hugh price for playing button games and be in stress that out cellphone doesn’t work of any reason.
14.3 update tonight is the ONLY time my MagSafe charger has now worked. First I spent $40 for the MagSafe and $20 for the plug, both Apple, and now they finally fix, without communicating anything about 45 days AFTER I bought this expensive phone. Apple is getting really sloppy.
Griff1026,
I had the same issue and your suggested procedure worked perfectly. But, what causes this problem and what is your procedure doing to fix it?
Thank you very much the help you’ve already provided!
This solution , or just a simple restart worked the first few times it started happening. Now have 14.3 OS. Magsafe hasn’t worked for weeks. lightening still does, however. I am disappointed. Been trolling forums and still no real answers or apologies for this defect.
My Iphone 12 PRO MAX charged using safe mag until yesterday. I'm now only able to charge using the lightening port. I'm currently installing IOS 14.3, hopefully that will fix the problem... I will post results
I’m the same, it happened when I first got the iPhone and I thought it was the charger so got a replacement. I then found out I needed to reboot the phone to fix the problem which I did and it started working. But even after the 14.2 update it’s happened again and I’ve got to reboot the phone again! Not really a long term fix is it!?
I have experienced the exact problem and through troubleshooting IDed that it was indeed the phone that was not accepting the charge. That is, the Apple charging block and MagSafe charging head were functioning. I followed the recommended fix (volume up / volume down / hold side button to reboot) and the MagSafe was functioning correctly again. My question is, will this be able to be repaired through iOS updates? It appears that it is a hardware / firmware issue and I wonder if such has been fixed in follow-on production runs. I would consider this to be a manufacturer's defect subject to the warranty terms.
My MagSafe Charger stopped working suddenly on 12 Pro two months after purchase, worked great up until then. Lightning still works fine. Rebooting phone - no effect. Even when battery at or below 20% & cold it would not work. Taking the "MagSafe Apple Case" off - no effect. Upgrading from 14.1 to 14.3 - no effect. Apple Tech Support remoted in to my iPhone and did real time Diagnostic Evaluation. "Normal" w/o any problems in charging hardware. They told me the MagSafe Charger itself was malfunctioning & recommended new charger. OK, so I got a new one today. Behavior on ALL above accounts is completely unchanged. Back on w/Tech Support for another remote Diagnostic Evaluation. MagSafe Hardware is apparently "Normal" again. WTF?? I also feel this is a product malfunction and will be replacing the phone as I much prefer the ease of use of wireless charging.
Update to my own prior post (< 1 hr ago): Decided to try one more reboot of iPhone 12 Pro. Now MagSafe Charger DOES work. Tried the prior charger -- that works also. Apple engineers remotely downloaded my iPhone Logs to find out more about issue.
I guess I'll just reboot whenever this happens again and hope a future software update fixes the behavior.
This problem started about a week ago for me. I have a workaround but I hope it's fixed soon.
Workaround: Hard restart the phone (Volume Up, Volume Down, Hold Side Button until Restart) WHILE IT'S ON THE MAGSAFE CHARGER. LEAVE IT ON MAGSAFE THE WHOLE TIME YOU WANT IT TO CHARGE.
If I take it off the charger even for a few seconds and put it back on, it will not charge. I get the charge signal in the top right and the big circle charge indicator and they stay on the whole time, but the charge percentage will go down, not up, over time.
Took it to the Apple Store and they wiped my phone and gave it back to me and told me it's now charging, but even on a fresh IOS 14.3 install the problem remained. I plan to use the workaround until 14.4 is released. If it doesn't work then I'll take it into the Apple Store and ask for a replacement as my phone is covered by AppleCare.
Here’s what finally worked for me (after changing cords & charger units, hard restarts, upgrading iOS to 14.3 and Apple Tech Support remote diagnostics/repair could not):
Apple ENGINEERS remoted in to my iPhone 12 Pro and did a more detailed Diagnostics & Repair then I did a Hard Restart WHILE PHONE WAS ATTACHED TO THE MagSafe Charger.
That did it! 5 nights later still working fine. If it happens again I’m just going to do the hard restart while it is already attached to the MagSafe Charger.
This worked for me too. It was weird, my phone said it had less than 50% battery life, but when I followed the steps you provided and it booted back up, I had 91% and was able to charge it again. Thank you!
