iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

How about this? I have had all of the problems with my iPhone 12 pro that everyone else is having. One difference is that all my problems are right from my house, meaning the same tower(s) are being accessed.

Now my wife’s iPhone Xr is dropping calls! Again, without leaving the house.

I talked to VZW who ran diagnostics on both phones and found nothing wrong. Suggested NOT using Wi-Fi, which seems counter to logic, but that made no difference.

This seems to confirm that there is a carrier problem, as you said.

I am thinking that it’s a really bad combination of carrier and hardware and some of us are caught in the middle with no fix.

I am glad your phone is working.

I have the sane problem of disconnection with a brand new iPhone 12 mini. The problem occurs staying at home and using my old SIM that works very well with my old iPhone 8. I read in a forum that the problem is in iPhone 12 hardware, that’s very sad. I asked for a replacement of the new iPhone. Let’s hope the new one won’t have the problem.

My iPhone 12 Pro stopped responding completely as of Thursday morning 12/3. Woke up with zero apps working, no network connectivity, no WiFi, can't restore the phone because I can't turn off Find My which requires network connectivity. Apple support chat has no idea what's going on and the next available appointment around me is in a week.

I have been having this same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro 256gb on Verizon. I have swapped the original 5G SIM with a LTE SIM. Still drops service. While I'm at work during the day, it's fine. It seems to happen more at home (switching towers I'm assuming). I have spoke with Verizon multiple times. I thought it was Verizon as first, but I believe Apple is to blame on this one.

Same issue here. Though it was my imagination. I just switch to at&t from Verizon. Still happening. Sudden loss

of cell signal. Won’t return until I turn on airplane mode and turn off again. I’m not in a 5g area so can’t say it’s a 5g issue. Very frustrating to pay this much for a phone and have these issues. It’s very random. Sometimes I go a week with no issues then all of a sudden it happens again.

I have the new iPhone 12 pro max. I am sick of signal dropping out and having to reboot phone to get it back. Presumably under the Consumer Guarantees Act it would be deemed “not fit for purpose” and as such I can return for full refund? This phone is for business and I either can’t phone people at all, or the call is too patchy to understand. Super annoyed at paying so much for a sub standard service.

I have the same problem. I spend two days fighting with Apple and Tmobile. They are pointing fingers at each other. I received my iPhone 12 pro max Dec 2, 2020. And my frustration with Apple and Tmobile being unable to replace my phone with a brand new one makes me the angriest man on planet earth. I’m a nurse and I use this phone a lot to communicate with doctors, nurses, hospitals, and with my patient. And they are making my life and the people I serve during this pandemic in jeopardy.

I read an article about this a few days ago, and today my wifi goes out at the house, and even though I have a strong LTE signal, I have absolutely no connectivity to data. I’ve tried the airplane mode toggle, reset network settings, restarting phone, and nothing works so far.

I’m using my wife’s hotspot to connect until they fix my wifi. Her phone is an iPhone 8 and it’s not having any problems. We also have an iPhone XR and there’s no problem there. And even a Samsung and there’s no problem with connectivity to data. Only my iPhone 12 Pro is experiencing problems.

Then that is very definitely a carrier issue.

It's very likely what is happening is the base station controller at your cell site is assigning your iPhone to an LTE frequency that is uncongested because it one that only newer phones (newer than the 8 and XR) can access.

Unfortunately, while the antenna apparently has a strong signal there are errors in how the demodulator for that frequency is wired into the data network.

Put more simply, it is exactly like a Wi-Fi router that is configured but is not actually connected to a network; connected devices would see a perfect Wi-Fi signal but there is no way to pass data.

Same problem. New iPhone 12 Pro. 5G works then drops out after a minute or two. Location: Brisbane, Australia in the city. Rebooting restores it, but only for a minute or two. I eventually disabled 5G in Settings and it works well on 4G only. It is not a SIM card issue - I am using the built in eSIM and do not have a physical SIM card.
