iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

Hello. I had the same problem for a new iPhone 12 mini in Italy with a SIM I was previously using with no problems in iPhone 8. The problem occurs randomly without moving from the house. The iPhone loose signal and I don’t realize until I try a call. The problem disappear rebooting. I have always very strong signal in my house . I sent the iPhone back and I’m waiting for a replace. The question is: if this is a general problem for all iPhone 12, should I give it back and have a refund instead of trying a new one that maybe had the same problem?

This happened to me 4 times yesterday while driving from CT to NJ. I had to reboot the phone to get LTE and GPS working again. I'm on an iPhone 12 Mini via AT&T. I also felt like the battery drained way faster than normal on that trip. My theory is that it is software related and a bug is causing it the single to be dropped and the phone works hard to re-establish the connection which causes the battery drain.

That would make sense if it wasn’t for the fact that this issue isn’t limited to a particular carrier. That’s great that you’re one of the people not having this problem but if you read through the thread you’ll find tons of people from AT&T, T-mobile, etc that are experiencing the same issue. Though I will say I’ve noticed more from Verizon.

Also doesn’t make sense because I’ve never experienced data issues until I upgraded to the iPhone 12 pro max.

5G can’t be the cause of the problem because I don’t use 5G and I have the setting currently set to LTE only. That wouldn’t explain why in a area it would drop its LTE signal doesn’t try to reconnect. I shouldn’t have to go to airplane mode to restore service to my device. Sounds like a Apple issue.

It’s definitely and most surely an APPLE issue, because it stems from many countries. I feel they are taking more action deleting messages from this forum, than addressing the issue and resolving, fixing, or at the bare minimum ACCEPTING this is a very key issue.

a phone that does not work as a phone, for that price, for obvious apple lovers who wanted to have it first. They’re réaction is abysmal!!

i had to buy an iPhone 8 runaround and put my business line in there, the iPhone 12 pro I have, is a game phone for my nieces and nephews (joke)

After many conversations with Apple, I believe that what Apple is calling "the 1-bar symptom" is caused by "the choice of network thresholds by the Carrier which can force the device to stay on an LTE band with a weaker signal." Apple sent a field engineer to my house to collect logs using multiple devices including several iPhones and an Android device. Apple then contacted Verizon to optimize their configuration for my location. I have a stronger signal since they did this. Obviously the carriers (not just Verizon) need to do this for their whole network, not just one location.

I also found that WiFi calling wasn't working. Apple suggested that I disable QoS on my router, and now I can use WiFi calling. On one of my iPhones the change was instant; on our other iPhone, we had to remove the SIM card and then replace it to get WiFi calling working. Further, Apple says the the "no-bar symptom" was also caused by having QoS enabled.

It’s not the SIM cards or the carrier services . I work for a Verizon indirect agent and we have been experiencing this same issue for a while now . It became way worse with the new 12 series release . It’s insane . You pay $1200 for a dang phone that can’t even hold service . Apple needs to get involved and see what is going on with their phones . Again, it’s not just the 12 series, the SIM card , the carrier , or a require of a network settings reset . Something is wrong with the phones . I’ve seen the “no service” issue happen with the iPhone 7’s , 8’s, X’s, XS’s, 11’s , and now the 12’s are doing it super bad .

Interestingly (I think), I have sometimes received a call during one of these episodes, but then I still couldn’t get cellular data to work .. at least, not immediately. Does that fit with the diagnosis described by @sillydg ?

Also, I’m not seeing a problem with WiFi with *this* issue. Are others?

(I’m on ios 14.2 w iphone 12 mini)

Understand... I’m an Apple lover myself, but it’s absurd to state that carriers EVERYWHERE across the globe need to change something that obviously works, just to prove an unintelligent theory that it’s not an issue with the NEW anomoly.

im excited about these AirPod Max and really want to buy them, but if I’m going to have to switch to Samsung, there would be no point.

please please, let Apple come correct and just make right their error, acknowledge it and fix/replace mine and other iPhone 12pro people angry with missing calls

It's not Apple's error.

The MTSOs are telling the iPhones to use a channel that isn't working well and are being obstinate about forcing them to use that channel regardless.

Apple's phones can only use the frequencies they are told to by the cell tower, they can't just jump to a frequency that would work better.

The same is true with the issue with QoS and Wi-Fi calling; it's not an Apple issue per se, it's poorly implemented QoS in those Wi-Fi routers.

The thing about playing with networking standards is everyone has to agree to follow the rules, or problems like this will happen.

With the release of each new iPhone, problems inevitably crop up and those issues are not resolved by future iOS updates, they are resolved by future carrier updates.

Why? Because many cellular carriers adopt a standard of "Hey, it works with this phone, it should work with all of them" which is not how the appropriate standards say things should work.

Phone : Iphone 12 mini.

Carrier : Telenor, Sweden. (No 5G at current location)

Previously used phones with no issues :

Iphone: 7/8/X/XS/XR/11.

Ipad: Mini/Air/iPad 2019/Pro. (Cellular)

Samsung: S7/S9/S10.

(except known issues with X)

Phones active in household (family of 4) without issues: iPhone 11x2. Iphone 7.

IPad Pro with cellular. Ipad air, cellular.

Tried : All mentioned in the thread. As most have. Change of Sim/E-sim. Restart, put into airplane mode and so on.

(For the price of this phone. It SHOULD not be needed. Considering other options)

Started directly after setup. Have had issues previous with restoring from backup so I install as "new phone".

Problem :

Starts with No signal > searches forever > skips the signal from 4G entirely and choose a 3G connection.

(And this is several times per day)

After a while it might find a 4G connection but it's always extremely low in downloaded data. Never had this issue and almost always had (110/30Mbit/s)

And low ping ~30

Now usually the upload speed persist but D/L falls down to around 2-3Mbit/s.

My operator blames apple, Apple use the

"No no, not us, it just works"

So where does it actually work is my question...

Again:

I have a 12 Pro Max, I am in the US and my carrier is AT&T.

My plan does not include 5G.

I have not had a single call drop or had a single "No Signal" notification since receiving my phone almost a month ago.

I do see switches between LTE and 4G regularly with no issues whatsoever.
