iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

I am surprised this situation has not been addressed properly by the carriers or Apple. They each seem to be ignoring and hoping the problem will go away. Which it will NOT!

Imagine paying hard earned money for a product that only works, "part-time"? Clearly that would be frustrating for all consumers. Nobody likes to waste money.

I was already given a replacement phone and SIM cards and guess what-neither of them corrected the issue. Once again today I have 1 bar, 1 bar of signal strength at home. My phone is resting on the table and only has 1 bar. No reason for that. Unacceptable. Then when I left the house for a short drive, I lost all signal strength for about 4 minutes, had to go in and out of airplane mode for the signal strength to reset. UNACCEPTABLE!

My iPhone 12 Pro Max drops service and I get “IPhone is not activated, please contact carrier” anywhere from 10-30 times a day. Toggle the airplane mode and service reactivates. Apple gave me new phone, Verizon gave me new SIM, still not working. Have tried digital SIM. Happens mostly at home so not switching towers. Have spent about 12 hours over last few weeks with Apple/Verizon reps restoring, trying different settings to no avail. Sent screenshots to Apple, still no fix. Very frustrated.

This issue is clearly documented to impact 10 of thousands of users worldwide on all the carriers. People on AT&T are facing the issue. Not all the users are experiencing it.

People posting here just represent a fractions of the people experiencing issues. With No Service in area with perfect reception issue, more and more people are posting and sharing their experiences on other forums too. When you combine all the feedbacks it represent a large number.

After upgrading to 14.3 and modem version 45.0 I'm still experiencing the issue. Now it looks like the phone is starting to pick the network after losing it.

Before it was showing No Service. Phone not activated. Now it is a mix. Sometime the phone shows no service and sometime the phone shows searching for at least 10mns then Suddenly picked up the network again.

But when I see Searching on the iphone screen and I look at the other device I have to benchmark running on a different os this device shows full reception.

Which is precisely what you would see if the iPhone 12 has been instructed to use a frequency band your other phone cannot access.

Think of how this works - only the very newest phones can access those bands, so from the tower's point of view, those bands are the least crowded.

It then says "Hey, no one is using frequency band X, and your device can access it, so go use X."

Unfortunately, something in the tower equipment or antenna is not set up to properly work with X.

This doesn't resolve itself until the carrier either addresses the issue at the tower, or issues a carrier settings update to tell your phone not to report that it can operate on band X.

I admit, I don't know for certain this is what is happening, but it certainly matches all the symptoms worldwide.

It is seemingly more of an issue for users on Verizon with 5G on their plans because of the way they utilize LTE DSS:

PC Magazine: Here's Why Verizon iPhone Users Must Turn Off 5G Right Now

which from the tower's point of view would once again want to use "lightly loaded" band X.

That’s funny... would you like to trade phones hahaaaa...

certain replies are so unnecessary considering the fact if they aren’t experiencing the issue, they obviously don’t even need to reply to anythting

mine Is still here troubling me. Apple store playing ignorant because their diagnostics can’t pick it up... but hey, merry Christmas all

Update: So I’m back after dealing with the Apple the last couple weeks. Ultimately, diagnostics didn’t pick anything up. They had me reset my phone as a brand new phone thinking that it may have been something faulty on the back up. I gave it a shot and to no avail, nothing changed. They gave me a new phone and that didn’t make much of a difference. I will admit that the recent iPhone and carrier updates have decreased the frequency of issue and allows the phone to continue to search for a connection instead of just going dead. It still happens enough on a day to day basis to be ticked off with Apple or Verizon, who ever is to blame, after paying 1400 IPhones. Seeing that the updated made a difference so I am assuming they’re working on the issue and after enough updated this issue should be resolved.
