iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

I am surprised this situation has not been addressed properly by the carriers or Apple. They each seem to be ignoring and hoping the problem will go away. Which it will NOT!

Imagine paying hard earned money for a product that only works, "part-time"? Clearly that would be frustrating for all consumers. Nobody likes to waste money.

I was already given a replacement phone and SIM cards and guess what-neither of them corrected the issue. Once again today I have 1 bar, 1 bar of signal strength at home. My phone is resting on the table and only has 1 bar. No reason for that. Unacceptable. Then when I left the house for a short drive, I lost all signal strength for about 4 minutes, had to go in and out of airplane mode for the signal strength to reset. UNACCEPTABLE!

This may be the last iPhone I buy! iPhone 12 has been the worst phone. It glitches, I can’t use my WiFi, I can’t connect to 5g, I can’t use data. I wish I wouldn’t have upgraded to this. I have bought iPhones for 10 years. This might be the one that breaks me. Constant issues. I use my phone all day for work but have so many problems I may have to trade back in so I can get my work done! Fix the problems!

I just experienced this at work too. I thought iPhone 12 pro only has the cellular connection issue, but Friday, I chose to keep using cellular and opt out the WiFi at work in the morning, then could not reconnect, tried airplane mode, turn WiFi on and off several time.s. Finally turn off phone 2 times, after one hour of trying to reconnect to WiFi.

this is bad.

Cancelled my order, Just did the same with (2) 12 Pro Max 512's. I and the other half decided to wait it out till iPhone 13 or when 120Mz refresh is available. My 11 Pro Max works for now. Sad, cause I love the blue and gold versions this year.

I just cannot be bothered with all the tech calls back and forth, esp, in 2020.

I am sad.....wanted this so bad.

I’ve had two defective iPhone 12 Pro Max already. I’m on my third one now. I got it Tuesday and now it is showing signs of issues. I keep hearing that Apple frantically had to grovel to Qualcomm to get the modem chip sets for the iPhone 12 lineup. Prior to this, Apple was using cheaply made radio modem by Intel. But Intel stated to Apple that they were unable to develop a chip capable of handing 5G and subsequently dropped out of the mobile market. Let’s just say that this deal was hastily packed together. Qualcomm has a new and improved radio modem that will debut next year with the new Samsung S21 series. That is called the X60. With any luck the iPhone 13 should have it next year.

One tip I use to get the signal back when my 12Pro is Searching for a signal and the airplane mode toggle isn’t helpful:

Open the Settings app and navigate to the Cellular page, that usually brings back my signal to a couple of bars as it’s trying to populate the cellular status.

Also, here’s a video of the issue similar to what I’ve experienced. https://youtu.be/T67j9SnuXFo

14.3.0 has helped me. I'm down to 4 disconnects in 5 days. That's down from 3-4 a day with 14.2.1 and 6-8 disconnects a day with 14.2.0.

I've done all the other remediations -- replaced phone, replaced SIM, upgraded to a 5G plan, reset, restore. I have a 12 Pro Mx with Verizon in suburban Phoenix. I always have 2 bars in normal usage and always have 2 bars once I reconnect.

I have the newest and latest Software Update 14.3 on these brand new iPhones. Had a Verizon high-level tech support work on both our new iphone's today changing & resetting some of the settings. Still did not fix anything. My wife had two more dropped calls just sitting there talking to the person. Never ever had this issue on our older Verizon iPhones.

Something is very, very wrong here with very expensive phones. I only have until January 15th to get this problem resolved or I am stuck with useless expensive iphones that drop your calls for no reason.

After trying many different options on my own & then what Verizon and Apple had me do I finally did get a new Sim card and a new iPhone. I did not do a restore but treated it as a new phone and just individually brought apps down off of iCloud.

I still have calls dropping and times when people can’t hear me but I would say those two issues improved my reception about 50%. Meaning I have about half as many dropped calls and times when people can’t hear me. Not ideal- Still not quite as good as my old 6S plus.

I’m still debating whether I’ll keep this new Iphone.

I had the exact same problem as the op and I stopped it with an LTE only sim card. My Iphone 12 Pro was losing signal and then it would say "Iphone not activated," requiring me to cycle airplane mode. I purchased my phone brand new from Visible(Verizon) and I have spent the last week going back and forth with them. We did a factory reset, reset network settings, re-provisioned, nothing worked. It was referred to the networking team, but they didn't know what to do either, and they finally sent a shipping label to return the phone.

Here's where it gets interesting. I put an active H2O LTE sim card in the phone, just for the heck of it, and the phone works perfectly now. No more lost signal - no more activation prompts. With H2O currently being LTE only, this leads me to believe that there is a problem with the 5g part of the phone. This might also explain why a few people have had success turning off 5G.

I have had the same issues.

Apple has a major problem on its hands with the iPhone 12 Pro (and the 12 series). I don’t want cute updates to take a picture. I want the next update to fix and address the most basic part of my device—to make phone calls!!!

I can’t say the R_ _all word, because Apple will delete my post. But unfortunately, it may be needed for thousands of customers, if software updates can’t fix their product so it can work as advertised!!!!

I had the problem from day 1 with my 12 Pro. I did the iOS 14.3 update last Monday and haven’t had an issue since. The phone has been flawless. I did notice that it updated my carrier and modem firmware as well. It seems to me that they are working on it and it will eventually be fixed worldwide. I’m in southeastern NC and seems like they have taken care of the issue here. I’m pretty sure it was the carrier update that fixed it.

Good luck. Verizon told me something very different. They instructed me to have 5G auto on and they also suggested that I enable WIFI calling. Something I have never done prior to getting my 12 mini and something I never needed to access when I was an AT&T customer.

Something tells me that Verizon has no idea what to do, their tech support staff also has no clue and the customer has to take it on the chin and either stay with the horrible phone or beg them to exchange for something else.

I'm on my 2nd iPhone 12 mini since last month and they both are equally performed terribly and exhibited the same problems.

They told me the same thing but WiFi calling and 5G auto made it worse. Mine is set to LTE only with no WiFi calling on and it’s been flawless since the 14.3 update. I did try it on 5G auto once just to see and when I hit a 5G area the person I was talking to couldn’t hear me but I could hear them. I put it back on LTE and it’s been fine ever since. I don’t think they have the 5G system worked out yet and it’s spotty service as well. I’ll leave it on LTE for a while until a few more updates come out and try it again. At least the phone works now!
