iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

I am surprised this situation has not been addressed properly by the carriers or Apple. They each seem to be ignoring and hoping the problem will go away. Which it will NOT!

Imagine paying hard earned money for a product that only works, "part-time"? Clearly that would be frustrating for all consumers. Nobody likes to waste money.

I was already given a replacement phone and SIM cards and guess what-neither of them corrected the issue. Once again today I have 1 bar, 1 bar of signal strength at home. My phone is resting on the table and only has 1 bar. No reason for that. Unacceptable. Then when I left the house for a short drive, I lost all signal strength for about 4 minutes, had to go in and out of airplane mode for the signal strength to reset. UNACCEPTABLE!

Good for you... you’ve added zero to this thread. I promise I’ve looked into this more then you, because I’m actually trying to find a fix for the issue OF NOT HAVING A FULLY FUNCTIONING OR RELIABLE PHONE and yes, there’s enough of a broad issue for this to be officially addressed by Apple. The world is a bigger place then you individually never dropping a call. This is a worldwide issue, not just an ATT or Verizon issue. I’m with VZW btw with a new sim and I know multiples that have had the phones replaced and still have the issue.

To share logic and facts.

”Phones replaced multiple times with the same problem” - that’s a carrier issue.

I’ve stated several times, the issue is probably due to the use of a particular brand of cellular phone equipment that has errors in their firmware that cause this issue to manifest. AT&T apparently doesn’t commonly use that brand where Verizon and other carriers around the world do. Having worked in telecom in the past I am very aware of how such issues propagate.

For example, classic AT&T step by step and 5ESs switchgear would allow you to wait a minute or more between entering touch tone codes and the call would still complete.

One common vendor’s switchgear today will not complete the call if the delay between successive digits is more than a second.

The fun part is you never know which type of switch your phone line will be assigned to, but it doesn’t occur because your home phone is broken.

You state you are a VZW customer; visit an AT&T store and ask to pop a demo SIM into your phone and do nothing more than see if you get a “no signal” error over say 30 minutes in the store.

If nothing else, it would be another data point.

I too have worked for a decade in telecom and have never come across an issue this dramatic to where the phone DEACTIVATES, not just drops calls. The close I’ve seen were with CDMA CSpire iPhones when they first launched with the iPhone 4S, but that was quickly corrected and was only an initial activation issue, not a reoccurring issue. This is AFFECTING EVERY MAJOR CARRIER AND IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Correct your not getting anywhere. The PHONE states it is deactivated anytime is loses reception... please explain how that’s a database issue when the phone itself loses internal activation when it loses connection to the database? The only thing I can see would be a phone carrier firmware issue, and like with CSpire that issue would fall on the carrier, but the issue is broader then one single carrier’s firmware and therefore is either an Apple OS issue or hardware issue. The only other thing it could be would be faulty API supplied to the carriers.

Jan 27, 2021 12:20 PM in response to stafri2

So what you’re saying is the phone deactivates itself anytime it loses reception? That’s easy enough to test with a Faraday bag.

Point is, were that the case everyone with an iPhone 12 that lived in a mountainous area would be experiencing the issue, and we don’t see every person whose ever driven through the Colorado mountains or rural areas of the US complaining of the issue.

Still, I’m willing to buy it if it can be reproduced with a signal blocking bag, but I don’t believe it’s that simple.

Just spoke to VZW engineer, said about another 30 days. Apple pushed updates in the 14.3 and 14.4 updates, however, things needed done at every tower in order to support the handoff from tower to tower. It is not backwards compatible to pickup a 3g signal it’s is only LTE and up. So when it cannot find the lte signal it doesn’t pickup the 3g.

Today I called Verizon to check out the non working phones. They said that they had no clue about this issue. They will send me a new SIM card. Will this work??? I don’t think so. I believe is more an Apple problem that they do not want to take care of it. It is frustrating to not be able to use your phone and not to be able to take it to Apple to fix it because they don’t have appointments in weeks!!!

Jan 29, 2021 5:28 PM in response to JCRPTG

Apple did send me a new phone. However, at the same time, Verizon also gave me a new SIM card since the new phone Apple sent was unlock phone, so without Verizon,s SIM card, could not work.

when I was setting up the new SIM card, I let Verizon know my phone,s problem of connection, then they set up my phone differently. It has primary and 2ndary. I have not have problem since.

So, try the new SIM card first and let them know your problem also. If still does not work, ask Apple to replace your phone.

I still seen the wireles sign without any bar, but my phone is still working.

Jan 29, 2021 5:28 PM in response to JCRPTG

Almost 2 months ago Verizon sent me a 2nd phone and 2nd SIM card and still no luck. Does not matter how many phones they send you or SIM cards, that will not fix the issue. I am on my 2nd phone and still having issues. Nobody from Verizon cares and seems like Apple does not either. In an earlier post I discussed how Apple made a slight effort to call me and fix the issue. I did a diagnostic check and sent that info to Apple. Crickets since! No more phone calls and replies to my emails. RIDICULOUS!

Jan 29, 2021 5:30 PM in response to JCRPTG

Do yourself a favor and just get rid of it. There is no fix. Not sure if it’s Apple, carrier or both but it will continue to not work. What I do know is my 12 will not have service at my place of work at all. Also I often drop calls and service at home. But yet a 5g capable phone from Samsung works just fine at my place of work in the exact same place. At this point I don’t care who’s fault it is. I need my phone for work and it says no service for 8 hours a day.

So, your Samsung 5G phone is working in places where Apple iPhone 12 5G is not, it’s not a Verizon, AT&T or T-mobile issue. It’s an Apple issue with their phone. If the phone company was to blame, Samsung 5G phone will would also have a problem. I actually bought 3 iPhone 12’s and returned them all due to poor reception and dropped called. Very disappointed.
