iPhone 12 losing service

Received my iPhone 12 Pro on Friday. Activated it on Saturday. Sunday I drove for 10 mns and when I arrive to my destination I saw no reception bars and No Service. And in the middle of the screen in a grey box: Your iPhone is not Activated.

The only way to get the connection back was to toggle Airplane mode to ON then OFF.

The iPhone had the cellular mode to 5G Auto. I switched it to LTE to test. And it was the same.

So I resetted the network settings: same issue and I resetted the iPhone as a new iPhone and reinstalled everything from scratch (not from a saved backup): same issue.

I drove my car and found the exact location where the phone lost the network. If the phone lost the network it means I reach the end of the coverage area from a certain antenna. It looks like something happened with the phone when I reach a zone covered by a new antenna.

I called my operator and they told me that everything is good on their end and I have the right SIM card for a 5G device.

I called the Apple Tech Support and they remotely installed on my phone two profiles:

  • Baseband and Telephony Logging
  • CFNetwork Diagnostics

I was able to replicate the issue after talking to the Apple Tech and I was able to submit the report.

I pushed a little bit the research and I found on Reddit a lot of people talking about the same issue not only on Verizon (my carrier) but also on AT&T. Just use the title I typed and you will find the article.

I never had such issue with the 11pro.

I am surprised this situation has not been addressed properly by the carriers or Apple. They each seem to be ignoring and hoping the problem will go away. Which it will NOT!

Imagine paying hard earned money for a product that only works, "part-time"? Clearly that would be frustrating for all consumers. Nobody likes to waste money.

I was already given a replacement phone and SIM cards and guess what-neither of them corrected the issue. Once again today I have 1 bar, 1 bar of signal strength at home. My phone is resting on the table and only has 1 bar. No reason for that. Unacceptable. Then when I left the house for a short drive, I lost all signal strength for about 4 minutes, had to go in and out of airplane mode for the signal strength to reset. UNACCEPTABLE!

So is this another AntennaGate? 48 pages of the same issue on just this forum? It sure seems pretty wide spread to me. I can't open a ticket because mine is so sporadic. I've been trying to track times and dates and I put in feedback but that's apparently not getting Apple's attention and neither do all the calls to support. How do we get their attention on this issue.

That's not true.

The iPhone 12 family supports different frequencies than older iPhones, and Samsung doesn't list which frequencies they support.

If the tower tells the iPhone 12 to use one of those frequencies (which will be less crowded because few devices support them) and there are tower/MTSO issues that cause those frequencies not to work properly, you will see what users here are experiencing.

The bottom line is though many here (particularly on Verizon) see these issues, literally millions of iPhone 12 customers worldwide do not. The key is to figure out why.

If it were the phone, that would not be the case.

While the issues are not unique to one carrier, they are much, much more prevalent with certain carriers, notably Verizon.

I still wonder what would happen if someone with an unlocked iPhone 12 that drops calls regularly on Verizon swapped out their SIM for an AT&T one.

IPhone 12 Pro here . I live in an area where there are 3 towers about 5 miles away . I call it the Bermuda Triangle. And after talking with Apple support which didn’t help as they went through everything I had already done as proceed to put it off on Verizon so then Verizon put it back on Apple. From what I am understanding it’s is the problem with the iPhones handing off the signal between towers and where I live that is the perfect storm. Lots of other iPhones work fine here . iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, iphone 11 , anyway the iPhone 12 Pro will not receive a call and if it barely does you can’t hear anything and you will lose the call . It’s horrible and basically a phone that can’t be used and no word what so ever about when or even if Apple knows how to fix the iPhone 12 Pro. And yes I have tried resetting network settings, airplane mode , hard resets , you name it and it won’t fix it . Apple knows they have a problem so I am starting to think that if they haven’t fixed it by now these iPhone 12 pros may be no good

Like others have said I have to assume it is a issue with the bands and tower locations. Could it be faulty hardware on certain phones during production? I don’t see why not. That happens in every other manufacturing platform so what makes Apple invincible to that? Others are so sure it’s a carrier issue and that’s fine, but there is no way to say that’s the case until the carriers fix the issue. If it’s never resolved then I would have to imagine it’s a manufacturing hiccup.

It is not just Verizon, there are a number of people that are overseas having this same problem, most of those use GSM which is the world standard, I mentioned before I have AT&T and Tmobile, both GSM networks.

So please stop, I love your passion but you are not helping to solve this.

Verizon is the largest carrier in the US, of course they are going to have more problems then everyone else, 2nd, of the three phones I mentioned I am the only tech savvy person, the other people grit their teeth and deal with it, that does not mean they are not having problems, the majority of people just call tech support or phone company and like the others here jump through hoops to try and fix it and just give up because they are tired of it.

The best option and I have talked to Apple Business is to return the phones and go backward, lucky for me I have two of old iPhone 11 Pro Max and can switch back at no cost.

Again, unless you can provide scientific answers that prove it is only Verizon quit trying to discourage others, you are doing no one any favors. This is how problems drag out.

Apple is not perfect, I have been part of the iMac recall and two different MacBook Pro recalls and we all remember the iPhone antenna issue that they fixed by giving everyone a free case.

I love apples products as much as you but I do not see how you are contributing to solving this, at least others are posting what they have tried to fix it.

This weekend I will try Funky Tangs solution to reset the phone to factory and set it back up clean, will post if it works later.

I know there are some AT&T users having issues, but my comments are based on the fact that I am personally aware of thousands of users on AT&T with iPhone 12s of various flavors and zero of them have complained of this issue.

That doesn’t mean one won’t tomorrow, it’s just where the evidence is pointing at the moment.

Meanwhile the vast majority of people complaining of this issue here seem to be Verizon customers.

Note also that a significant number of Apple employees use iPhone 12s, and most of them are on AT&T because historically they were the first carrier to embrace the iPhone; long time iPhone users will remember that with the original iPhone you had to use AT&T.

If the 12 was as bad as some people here insist it is, it never would have been released for just that reason.

That’s why I am not being at all snarky when I wonder what a user would see if they tried an AT&T SIM in one of the phones that can’t sustain a Verizon call; I’m really curious if it would fail in the same way or if it would just start working.

Really, I still think it is an issue of a particular brand of MSC equipment at MTSOs as carriers tend to standardize on particular ones and usually not the same gear as their competitors, but that would also fit the symptoms that the issue affects a variety of carriers in different ways.

Hopefully it gets sorted soon, and if you purchase one and run into these issues and don’t want to hassle with it of course it makes sense to take advantage of Apple’s return policy and get something else.

Well, it’s definitely a 5G problem. Like I said, I bought 3 iPhone 12’s and returned them all. Now, I have been using iPhone 11 Pro on 4G with no problem for a month now. No drops calls. Mostly full signal. No issues.

I still strongly believe it’s Apple with the problem. I have been doing a lot of reading on this. A lot of people who are using a 5G capable Samsung phone in the same house with a family member that is using an iPhone 12 have no problems. I guess, I might just have to purchase a Samsung 5G phone go test this theory out. I’m with Verizon by the way.

Jan 30, 2021 10:10 AM in response to KChawla

I totally agree and I think for the handful of people that can take advantage of 5G it was a good try but I think it was way too soon to take that chance and possibly lose customers that don’t care about 5G at this point. But yeah that probably what we are going to have to do is downgrade to get a better iPhone. That is terrible to say the least.

i used the same sim from my iPhone 11 Pro Max when I changed to the Mini and am getting/experiencing the same service issues everyone else is in this thread. AT&T postpaid plan with unlimited for the 5G access. i get service (never drops) but i apparently get bypassed calls (my phone goes straight to voicemail apparently) and WiFi calling does the same. I reset network settings, turned off WiFi calling and also did a network refresh via the AT&T app but the issues still persist

Amazing that so many of us continue to experience these issues. Earlier today I noticed that once again I lost my signal strength while inside my home. That should not be happening. When my carrier was AT&T and my iPhone was the 7, signal strength. never was a concern, especially at home.

I read that the latest IOS updates do not seem to recognize this issue so I guess expecting a fix with an update is out of the question.
