iPad Air 4 Battery Drain

Hi, I got an iPad air for drawing and the battery has been draining very quickly when the screen is off, almost as if the screen was still on. The only app I have is procreate and I have a apple pencil 2 paired with it. Any help would be appreciated.

As an update to my post a couple of weeks ago I got a new unit from the Apple store as a replacement because my compass sensor was broken. Apple refused to take it back or officially acknowledge the battery had an issue but because the compass was broken I was able to walk out of the store with a replacement unit in hand. The replacement is working great, couldn’t be happier. I am 100% convinced that a some sort of hardware issue was at fault. Maybe the broken compass sensor was drawing power when it was not supposed to or something. If you are having this issue I would recommend to push for a replacement, best of luck!

That's excellent. I'm pleased for you.

Unfortunately, your case and customer service experience seems to be the exception rather than the rule. I recall being laughed at by tech support when I asked for a replacement on day 12 of ownership. I received my iPad Air 4 in Oct '20, and I noticed the battery drain problem after a couple of charging cycles, including the darker screen when compared to my older iPad 6. That device is truly a workhorse under the hood, minus the dreaded white spot on the screen near the home button; that spot appeared two years after purchase.

Do keep us posted on the battery status of your new device. Thanks for sharing.

I have exactly the same issue, I have just been talking to apple support and did the same thing with me as they have with everyone else on here. In the ten minutes I was talking to them using the iPad it dropped 4%. This is my second iPad Air 4 in the last month as my first was killed by the update. It decided to completely crash then refuse to restore.

I have literally lost another 2% whilst writing this reply. I really hope this is an iOS issue that will be fixed soon!!

I sent my new ipad air for repair because of the loss of battery when i don’t even use it. They sent it back to me and said that they couldn’t see anything wrong and that I should document it better next time. They redet my ipad and told me not to restore it from backup. So I didn’t, but the issue was not redobles. So I decided to charge my new ipad and my old old 2. gen to 100% put them both in flight mode and på them in the drawer for a couple of days. Three days later my old ipad still had 100% and the new one had lost 15%. I had taken screenshots from both ipads as proof, so i drove to the store, which is a 20 min drive, and the ipad had lost an additional 3% in that time. The store sent it back to the repair shop. When they finally returned it to me, they said that: “Everything checks out. It’s not uncommon for at battery driven device to loose 15% while not in use. It is more uncommon that your old ipad still has 100%”… Well that’s just great! So what am I supposed to do now? I can’t get my money back and they won’t acknowledge the problem or give me a new one.

Yay, good to hear! I’m having the same problem I think with my iPad Air 4. Did you have to pay anything to get yours replaced? And how long did the process take? Did you walk into the store or…?

I’m worried because I bought mine from someone else online and don’t know if I am eligible for a replacement. The battery dies noticeably faster than my old iPad 6th Gen. I’m only getting 4 hours. The device looks new and has its original box+charger, and its serial number says I have limited warranty until 04/2022.

Hi! I’m a iPad Air 4 user, I bought it from a person online and the iPad for the first month was great, but after 35 days I noticed 15 minutes less of battery, I think is not important but, 1 week later, another 15 minutes less of battery, I worried a bit, 4 days later 20 minutes less battery! That’s definitely not normal, but even worse, 2 days later 10 minutes less and 4 days later literally 1 hour less of battery!!! Now my iPad only lasts 5 hours of use! When I purchased it the battery lasted 8 hours of use, now only 5! In only 50 days of use and 37 charge cycles, I tried recalibrate the battery, drop battery to 0%, tips to save battery and all, but the battery keeps losing more durability and I don’t know what to do, I restarted the iPad several times and nothing, today my iPad loss another 10 minutes and I think that It will completely die, just by writing this comment I loss 3%! When the iPad is on standby mode it drops 2 - 3% every 10 hours which seems nice, but when I use it is all bad battery, I updated the iPad 2 times, first I was having iPadOS 14.6 and nothing was wrong but the month later the problems started with iPadOS 14.6 so I updated to 14.7 and nothing solved the problem, It keeps going worse, so I updated to iPadOS 14.7.1 and keeps going worse! I can’t believe Apple sell to us that devices with defects, Apple haves to solve this! I use my iPad for games, school, taking notes and this is how much the battery lasts: Games: 4 hours and 50 minutes (I made every single tip for save battery and this is not normal al all) YT and videos: 9 hours but that’s only because YouTube made a optimization update to have more battery while watching videos, if it was older YouTube version it lasts only 6 hours, safari and web browsing: 7 hours and 40 minutes (that is not normal) and by only having the screen on it last 8 hours! With wifi off and everything off and screen on but no apps being used it lasts 9 hours, and the charging time it charges from 1% to 100% with wifi on 2 hours and 36 minutes and with wifi off 2 hours and 14 minutes which seems ok, I can’t believe this issues PLEASE APPLE DO SOMETHING! I hope this is a software problem and it gets fixed soon, good luck to everyone having this problems I hope it gets fixed.

I have the exact same problem. My chart looks like I used it for 9 hours but I was technically with the screen on for less than an hour. I have been trying for 4 days now with the above suggestions and they all don’t work. I’m trying to get a replacement but the store where I got it said I can’t return and have to bring it to Apple Services. But they are closed since we are in lockdown. I’m getting so tired of this now.

I use my iPad Air 4 for drawing, videos, news reading and etc. I purchased it in April of 2021. Initially, I received at least 9 hours of battery life in heavy use (i.e., imaged editing and with other apps open). This seemed acceptable ... as I used it heavily with a keyboard and Apple pen.

Rapid battery discharge began in mid-July. I am unsure of the exact date. This week while connected to 4 separate chargers ... one of which is an Apple charger within 12 hours ... the iPad discharged to zero. At zero, it began charging again and will now charge to 100% on all four tested chargers.

During this time I took it to the "Genius" ... Apple support desk at Best Buy. Their best answer was to take it back home and see if this happens again. That Apple probably would not replace it. So, I am suppose to depend on something that randomly refuses to charge and dies.

My thought is that I did not spend this amount of money for a project. There are over four pages of approximately the same problem over time. Why is Apple not fixing this? My family may not buy another Apple tablet. This one is one of at least 10 over a decade in my family. My iPad Air 4 is working again today ... but, for how long?

I feel like I have similar battery issues. It's strange, my only other iPad was an iPad Gen 1, and I swear, the battery used to last weeks.

Generally, with this Air, I feel like I need to charge the battery every day, like a Phone. I can only assume with all the cloud services, diagnostics and AI, that the battery is being chewed a lot faster.

I'm going to resort to Low Power Mode I think and see if that makes a difference, I can't see any reason not to have it on permanently if it helps with battery life.

Found this thread searching for help with my battery drain issues. I hate to say but I have an iPad Air 3 and have been having the exact same issues recently! I updated to iOS 15.1 to see if it was a software problem. I have turned off everything except Wi-Fi and battery is still draining. Even when turned completely off. I lose over 30% with no activity and 0 screen time overnight! I have reset settings and deleted apps that were shown to be using screen time (even though I hadn’t used them). This has to be some software change in the iOS 14 versions. Thoughts anyone? I’m out of any other ideas to try!

So almost a year ago I got the air 4 (64GB) and I was noticing that the battery was draining like 6-8% overnight. I didn’t think much of this but then I had it charged to 100% on Monday and it was dead by Thursday or Friday afternoon.

my first iPad is a mini 2 ( 6-7 years old) so I charged that up to like 88% and used it for a bit.

last night my air was at 36% and mini at 80%

8hrs later my mini was at 80% and air was at 32%

id say my iPod 4gen will hold battery longer too. Apple needs to fix this.
