iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

SO after getting two brand new iphone 12 pro max, after ordering Like 9 models , i can confirm all fot this weird LCD like screen in pitch black room on a blakc wallappaer in full screen in photos apps ( to reproduce the issue easily ) or even by jut booting each phones out of the box in my bathroom with no lights on , ( you see this grey flicker...

I got 2 12 pro max today starting with F2 week 51 of production, like most of the ones i got , it's way better than the last one i got starting with G0... the issue is still present but barely visible specialy on one model + no yellow tint...

So i send pics to apple, and they confirmed to me THAT THEY DO NOT READ THESE FORUMS... AT ALL...

if u cant this minor issue ( in their opinion and i agree ) to be fixed , you need to call them and spend 30 min or 1 hour max with tech support and explain them all of this.. issue is software cos it never happen with brigthness at 100% and when the phone boot at first, the screen is perfect , you see the apple logo and then the grey flicker comes for a few seconds, it means that so cores components that initialize when booting up like all the sensor in the notch must be causing a little software bug that most ppl do not see.

they do have enough reports of this specific issue.. if all the people here were to call them maybe they'll will really look into the issue.. i've send pictures to them, spent some time with them, and it's the only solution for a fix to be coming ASAP.

hope most of you will calll them . otherwise they may fix it when 13 is released..

Same issue for both of my 12 pro. The first one showed the same symptom at higher brightness. Did a exchange today, the second one just like the 12 you have, it generates light at any brightness lower than 90-100%. Both machines were made from the same factor with the F17 S/N. So I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.

Oh I did not realise the first image, I probably just didn’t notice properly until updating to 14.2

As for the 12 vs 12 pro panels, you are correct, they are the same but are software limited, my bad. However the oled panels for the 12 and 12 pro are made by LG and the panels for the 12 pro max and 12 mini are made by Samsung. That’s why I’m skeptical to believe that it is a hardware issue or more so a problem with the panel it could be an issue with some other part of the device causing this issue. As this is occurring on two seperate manufacturers panels.

It could very well be a hardware issue, and in that case I would predict judging by how wide scale it is, pretty much all iPhone 12 models would need to be recalled/serviced.

But I find it hard to believe that two of the best oled manufacturers some how missed this issue in their quality control but again just optimistic that it can be solved with a software update rather than a full hardware service.

It reports the same flickering issue. He compared it to his old iPhone 11 Pro Max. The iPhone 12 shows very clear green flickering. And it’s unclear if it’s a hardware issue and software issue. In the top comments from of video, it seems some South Korea media reports that Apple is aware of this and started investigation last week. But not clear result at this time stage.

The panel in my max is in every condition better. No ugly yellow/green tint like the old 12 pro, absolutely no glowing at static pictures.

At the test with video https://youtu.be/AYtvehF9-Z8

the flickering is slitly there but much less on the max as on the normal 12. Backlight was around at 10 % backlight.

My speculation with two issues. The max has a panel from another manufacturer therefore the grey/green tint glowing is away. The flickering is maybe not a SW issue, but could been solved with SW.

I will stay with the Max. After two hours with it the iPhone SE (2020), the size of the SE (2020) seems to be like a iphone 5 because the max is realy big. I Believe in future I won‘t go back to an normal size.

I agree that it probably has to do with the display driver, and it may not even be something thats fixable with a software update.

Problem is it seems that not all phones have it, and I'd also bet that a majority that do don't know it since, A) not everyone uses their phone in bed, and B) non tech-savy users upgrading from phones with LCD panels probably wouldn't even know there was something wrong.

Some people are saying the displays are sourced from both Samsung and LG, and it's the LG panels having the issue, while the ones who seem to be fine got phones with Samsung panels. But I can't find anything concrete on that.

I'm worried apple will just decide that the majority of people will never notice, ignore all of us, pretend nothing is wrong, and never do anything about it.

Honestly I think that is a general drawback of OLEDs. Most OLEDs ive seen have a color shift at modest to extreme angles. LCDs doesn’t seem to suffer from that issue. How vibrant the color shift will vary from display to display. That green however is rather strong, might want to get that replaced if it bothers you. My X had a greenish tint at angles but my 12 Pro is fine.

I just got my new iphone 12 pro 128gb and can confirm I have this issue

I tested in a pitch black environment with an all black photo and it was actually perfect at all brightness levels, however once I played a pitch black youtube video it has the glow under 100% brightness as well as the flickering.

It seems to do this for a few second and then the OLED pixels seem to turn off again to allow true black.

I’m going to see if this effects my nightly use because I never leave my phone at 100% brighness, if it does I’ll be returning the phone.

Apple, you have to fix this it’s unacceptable for a premium product!

The thing is: if you were right (and it technically could be a software-related issue), how do you explain some models don’t flicker at all or display that odd grey-green tint in the dark? They are all running the same version of iOS. I think something hardware wise is interfering. When the phone is “bare” with no iOS installed, maybe it has to load less and the processor doesn’t work intensively. When iOS kicks in and the chip has to handle more tasks, there we are back!

Another thing I noticed is that the green tint is not the same for all of the models, which is kinda worrying.

Mine is green, my brother’s is light grey.

And again, mine flashes a lot more in the dark, his still flashes but it’s more subtle and less disturbing to the eyes.

Do you think a software bug can vary from phone to phone? That sounds really strange to me.

Also, the reason why who’s installing the beta versions of iOS 14.2 and iOS 14.3 is still experiencing this issue, could mean that they are installing a version that doesn’t include the bug fix, no matter how further they go with iOS?

I mean, can we expect a minor iOS 14.2.2 or 14.2.3/ 14.2.4 that finally fixes the problem while the already existing 14.3 (beta) doesn’t? I really hope so.

okay i do not have the exact same issue as yours, mine is one who is not noticeable unless you are in complete dark , for exemple if i watch a black background in photos app and move brightness to 100% all is okay when watching the screen, it's totally turned off but as soon as i lower the brightness under 100% the screen will stay for one to 10 seconds with all the pixels having a green tint and u can see this black in the dark but after a while it snaps back to perfect blacks.

but i have another issue switching from an iPhone X who had a white balance with a blue tint , the 12 pro max have a permanent yellow tint that is not nice, i had to go to accessibility and manage the color accuracy to correct the white balance.

i prefer to wait until like the 2nd of january to see if a software fix is released, if not i'll ask for a refund and order a new one. cos i'm not fond of exchanges even if apple would send me a brand new unit.
