iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Went to apple store again and was told they have to follow protocol before swapping out my phone. So we did another software reset directly through the computer which did not resolve issue. The next step was to replace the screen and not the entire phone. Took about two and a half hours, but I can confirm that the new screen fixed the problem of the green tint. No more tint or flashing on black screens at any brightness levels, at least so far. I am on ios 14.4. This leads me to believe it is a hardware issue. Hope this helps

I know for a fact there are iphone 12’s out there without the issue. but some people replaced their phones for 4-5 times and still got the faulty panels. So I’d say this is not a super isolated issue.

But this discussion thread has gotten out of hand I think. Because I saw people complaining that colors are changing when they tilt the device up and down, left and right. That is not an issue, that is just standard OLED behavior and one of the most important drawbacks of the OLED technology.

My brother just got his 12 pro (Production week 51) and no green tint or flickering, only with a brightness around 30% there is a slight active backlight, only around 30%. 14.2.1 installed. There is a slight flaw as mentioned but the display is much better than my 12 pro (production week 40) which has both a green tint and noticeable flickering. . We have the same panel on our iPhones, G9P. This is strange and I hope it's only a software issue.

Yes. Need to upload some video I took to YT. Only really noticeable in lower light or dark scenes. OLED TV's have same issue for years only Panasonic seems to have solved it using dithering.

" HZ2000 also delivers clearly defined shadow details, although you can, if you move close enough, see some artefacts from Panasonic's 'dithering' implementation (see picture on the right) used to avoid brightness pops in the darkest grey tones.

Anyways, last time I noticed it was recording slow-mo video indoors in dimly lit scene. Playing back video on phone entire screen flickered like crazy almost thought phone was broken or something!

I think Apple is maximizing performance for the display that’s why we have the so-called OLED issues of not displaying true blacks all the time. This performance setting is to mitigate both smearing and image retention.

So I’m thinking they’ll provide us with a setting with option between “Quality” or “Performance” in another OS update if they can’t get both.

I am also facing these issues related to the display on my iPhone 12 pro max starting with F2LD serial number:

  1. Grey (For me its more of grey than green or may be its just perception) tint when restarting my phone in completely dark room, initially it is perfect black but as soon as the OS is loaded it becomes grey for a second or two (just before the home screen is displayed).
  2. The screen flickers when I play this (Black screen for Backlight Bleeding - 1 hour 1080p) video in a completely dark room. Flickering does not happen at 100% brightness, but only at brightness lower than 100%. Although i don't watch videos in dark room but still when you are spending 1259 euros on a device, you would not want to see such behaviour.
  3. In dark room, when you open settings or notes app or a completely black image, black is not perfect black instead it is grey. I compared it with my X and X shows the true blacks. This also happens when the brightness is lower than 100%. Also, top of the screen is more greyer than the bottom 1/3 of the screen (which has a slight tint of red).
  4. When i try to close the notes in dark room, the first 3 lines shows this weird behaviour:

Apart from this, I have also noticed a gap on the top and left side of the display, I can easily insert a piece of paper in this gap. The depth to which the paper goes inside is exact 2mm on top and left side of the screen. I can not replicate the same on the bottom and right side of the screen which is very weird. Also, I can not replicate this on the rear panel of the phone. Dust can easily get accumulated in this space and I am afraid if the water can also go inside:

I can still return the phone by 8th of January, but I am confused.

For the display issue i dont know if this can be fixed with a software update. I have gone through this thread and there is lot of speculations over hardware or software issue. Sad thing is apple is not commenting on it.

For the gap on the sides, i dont know if this phone has been designed like this.

After using my Iphone12 pro max for 52 days and waiting for apple to fix display issues (flickering and blacks not showing pure blacks in dark room) all this while, I return it today to the apple store.

I will buy it again if there is fix in next few weeks.

I tried to explain the genius guy that this issue is present in many iphone 12s and he said he cant believe what i am saying :)

I hope they fix the issue through software update for the ones who can not return it.

Tried the same thing in Belgium apple store Brussel. They didn’t even want to help me, no repair offer or replacement of the phone since I past 14days return right. Explained like you, they ran some diagnostics on my phone and said everything is normal>> no defects so no reason to return or repair. Walked out of store with same issue and same phone.....

Here are more good iPhone 12 from my friends:

Good iPhone 12 with no raised blacks, no green tint, no yellow tint from friend:

S/N: FFXDP...

Week: 48

issue: none!

Good iPhone 12 with no raised blacks, no green tint, no yellow tint from friend:

S/N: FFMDG...

Week: 46

issue: none!

Seem‘s to me that iPhone 12 from Foxconn (S/N starts with FF...) are good ones, because all good iPhone 12, that I know, have a S/N that starts with FF...

Maybe Apple should investigate here more deeply!
