iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Lots of people in Korea have this problem too, I just hope that it can be solved by software update.

When I boot up my iphone 12pro, and when I watch dark video especially including black color, the OLED doesn't show me the complete black color. I really hope that it is just a software bug and can be fixed by software update.

Alright guys, after a whole day of testing and using my phone, I found the issue to occur at following situations:

1)flickering side bars when watching true black on HDR on YouTube.

2)the whole screen was on (black pixels were raised) when watching the same video on YouTube web

3)zooming in and out on a picture would cause a quick flicker (the same picture in both Photos app and Messenger)

Problems that occurred on my first phone but not second

1)flickering was not green on my new one

2)flickering to occur when using apps with black background

3)green flicker when starting up

Funny, when I read your comment I was thinking this comment is directly from Apple:

„I need the overall functionality of the phone rather than complaining about its display. Hope people here rethink their priorities“

This could exactly said by Tim Cook to make this problem more usable to us fellows haha

This Leads me to the question @marcpodi

Are you Tom Cook? 😂

That’s why I talked about priorities in the end of the message. To me, that is not my priority. I will rather wait for them to fix the issue rather than going back and forth to Genius bar and restoring software over and over and over. If they don’t address the issue for a considerable amount of time that I have hoped for, then I’ll call their support again for an update.

Again, this is how I want to handle the issue myself.

Agreed. Just talked to Apple Support on the phone. At first she was not aware of the issue. After explaining a bit more what the problem is, she found additional info. She confirmed they are aware of the issue and are still investigating. Basically there will be a software fix or a repair program. They would not swap the device for now because it would be a waste if the problem indeed would be software. My mind is at ease. I’ll be enjoying this device and will wait for a solution.

Yeah, I’ve the same problem (iPhone 12 pro) and the same approach to it. Let’s take it “easy” and wait for some instructions from Apple; it’s weird and unusual to deal with these kind of problems on a €1000+ Device, but returning now for a change has no sense because we still don’t know if it is software or hardware related. Let’s keep updated.

Updated: got my device back from Apple repair center .... technician claimed no issue. But when I start up my iPhone 12p again the issue come out on the Apple logo screen (before I restore my iPhone).

Then I contacted again Apple support (senior this time), nothing he can offer because technician will be the only one who decide they will change you a new device or not. The only thing he can offer agian is to send the device agian to the repair center which it will be the same result he said ....

Therefore now come to next chapter 🤭🤭 tommorow they appointed me to another call with customer service, and hope to find any solution ( addressing this subject to product liability - consumer law) . Will keep you guys posted again. #IPhone12Drama hahaha 😝

Dec 16, 2020 11:58 AM in response to m4x1k

I took my iPhone to review and Apple did not take responsibility. The technician told me that he had a chat with Apple and that the device worked well, that there was nothing to repair and that he waited for the following software updates. But we all know that if it's a fault and yet Apple does the one that doesn't know what they're talking about...

Dec 16, 2020 12:01 PM in response to m4x1k

Yes totally agree.

There is a problem, but technician from

Apple keep denied and refuse to take further step to treat your device ( I went to Genius Bar and also mail-in repair both have reply me the same)

They are trying to push me away by telling me the system diagnostics tools show no issue. I know there is no issue with the diagnostic tools but dude ! Please rethink a little bit , if there is no problems why I keep contacting Apple support ..

and then senior advisor telling me sorry he can’t offer me much.. he can only do is (1)make another repair request.

Then i asked for exchange a new device or replace my screen; both options are rejected. He told me; if I want to new device then only way he can offer is TRADE-IN my iPhone 12 Pro 😅😅😅... then buy a new one. 😳😳😳

So end up I come with consumer law protection to address this issue. So let’s see tommorow for the “customer service call” 🙏🏻🙏🏻

The only reason why Apple is telling customers to wait for an update is to get them out of the return policy period. Obviously, during the Christmas season, the demand is high. So, if they accept this issue, the return rate will reach unmanageable levels. Once the return allowed period is over, Apple will make the process difficult for the customer to repair their devices under warranty. But believe me, they know about it, and they will deny the issue at all costs.

Dec 16, 2020 1:56 PM in response to Atxyde

Apple can ignore the problem for the moment but there is consumer laws which protect us against this type of behavior and if many people complain about the screen, they will have no choice to refund thé consumer or change the oled panel. There is also a significant risk of class action on the part of consumers who will receive a defective iphone during the holiday season. Apple has no choice to solve this problem.

Dec 16, 2020 2:08 PM in response to Lellouche ilan

I doubt this situation will reach the level of a class-action lawsuit. The general population will not notice this or will not care about it. Also, there is no statistical evidence yet of the number of phones with this issue. For example, my wife didn't see any problem with it until I compare it with my iPhone X, and like her are a lot.

Hello everyone,

after long discussions with apple support and some thoughts on my part, here is the conclusion.

to begin with, there were two manufacturers who shared the contract for the production of new screens on the iphone 12 pro and 12 pro max one of them signed for the first time this year with apple, the second is that They have been providing apple screens for a long time ...

most of the screens were provided by this new company, probably following a more interesting offer.

But a much less interesting quality!

For my part, I actually returned my unit for a replacement on 12/08/2020. (no problem for that)

Initially I was to receive my replacement unit on 01/04/2021 (I had noted two days before the return request that if I ordered a new device it was the same delivery date)

Later on 12/13/2020 I notice that the delivery date is brought forward to 12/28/2020 and indeed the date for a new device in the apple store is also advanced.

I will therefore receive my device at the same time as if I bought a new one!

whereas if I precede a replacement I am in VIP treatment to receive a new unit as quickly as possible (this is real and lived and confirmed by the apple team)

The conclusion is that a new production line has been opened to design flawless units.

The rest of the defective units are no longer delivered.

No updates will fix the problem!

as explained very well @ m4x1k

(for my part, in addition to the screen twinkling I had lighter lines and spots on my screen, this indicates a poor screen quality)

Return your devices as soon as possible before it is too late, from now on you should receive a faultless unit if it arrives by 12/28/2020 at the earliest.

!!!! I am a European resident located in Belgium !!!!

NB: at the time I make this publication if I order a new unit I will receive it on 01/06/2021
