iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Lots of people in Korea have this problem too, I just hope that it can be solved by software update.

When I boot up my iphone 12pro, and when I watch dark video especially including black color, the OLED doesn't show me the complete black color. I really hope that it is just a software bug and can be fixed by software update.

A friend got his iPhone 12 Pro yesterday. Produced in calendar week 52. I tested it in the absolutely dark bathroom, with the boot screen and a black picture you can see that the OLED display isn't completely darken. I also had two iPhone 12 (not Pro) in my hands for the past two weeks. Both produced in week 48. Both (!) iPhone 12 were tested under the same conditions and they did not have these problems. They were completely black, regardless of the display brightness. So, can it be that the iPhone 12 has panels from other manufacturer?

After using my Iphone12 pro max for 52 days and waiting for apple to fix display issues (flickering and blacks not showing pure blacks in dark room) all this while, I return it today to the apple store.

I will buy it again if there is fix in next few weeks.

I tried to explain the genius guy that this issue is present in many iphone 12s and he said he cant believe what i am saying :)

I hope they fix the issue through software update for the ones who can not return it.

Same in Belgium Apple store, they won’t acknowledge or believe you. I couldn’t return my phone anymore and they didn’t want to help me because I did not buy the phone in apple store.... I don’t use my phone anymore and went back to my old one. Shame of the 859euro I paid for my device but it is wat it is. I have not other options....

One other fact, I think it is not software related like it was on the 11 series. I compared my iPhone 12 mini with 5 devices in 2 shops running iOS 14.3 and identical screen settings, they had a perfect crisp bright white screen without yellow tint. It’s clearly depending on panel used from wich manufacturer, if you have a yellow one it’s bad luck and not seen as a defect by the apple Genius Bar guys. No defect=no help or replacement, case closed. Some of the owners of the new 12 serie even don’t notice it till you compare to 11 or XS. The panels from XR and 7-8-se wich are lcd panels have better whites and are more krisp then the 12 serie....So not upgrade to 12 is only solution.....

Same in England when I called the online sales to return my iPhone 12 Pro Max - the guy on the phone didn't comment about the green glow but said he's got an iPhone with a white screen, not yellow, and didn't know what I'm talking about and said he can get me a phone with a white screen - if he doesn't know the issue then how can he be sure he doesn't have a yellow tint? No thanks, it's going back and I've ordered 11 Pro instead.

Exactly. How can he know that his phone has white screen if he haven’t seen differences in screens?! That’s basically admitting. Good for you that you could return it, I had less luck and stuck with mine wich I don’t use anymore btw. It’s total rubbish screen and ugly to look at. 11 or 11 pro is the best choice. Good job

The yellow tint is not a big deal can be fixed with color filter

the reason is appears yellow as this is the way to be able to output correct colors while being an Oled

Our problems are

MAIN- grey/green glow of blacks

2ND- green tinted colors at low brightness for some users

I could get my hand on another 12 Pro Max (just testing of my friends') there is no grey glow whatsoever and no flashing blacks on any of the video tests (G9Q panel with perfect grey uniformity I found out it is better than both G9N and G9P)

but when set to 0-8% brightness the grey color appears a little bit greenish(that is because the panel should not go that low on brightness and should be tweaked to display less green)

Conclusion:

-There are phones without the issue for sure I personally think it is less evident in the Pro Max series for two reasons

1-Only Samsung supply the panels.

2-The display is big so Apple gives more care for its quality control as defects will appears much easier.

-This can definitely be fixed with software specially the green tint problem is as I said it requires Apple to identify it as a serious issue and will most likely take time to test and isolate the affected units(this can be fixed by giving users manual controls!!! but sadly that is not how Apple do things)

-Lastly I agree it is an issue I just want you people not to make it bigger than more what it is(yes 1000$ and an issue etc,)but still it is a phone it should not control how happy or how sad you are.

Have a good day!! <3

This is such a joke, i dont know why but i am still trying. i am on my 7th iphone 12 mini now which will arrive on monday. The current one that i got has the best out of the 6 i have had. The blacks glow only below 50 percent but then go off after a second or so, only between 0 and 8 percent the glow although very little remains. I am so obsessed with getting a good device, and why not? I paid for it and apple must deliver. I am beginning to see even a slight glow and i have not come across any good panels yet. So i hope this “good panel” myth is busted, i still check it meticulously to the level of obsession, so even though the last one i had almost no glow, the almost was not good enough for me. I expect and deserve to get a great device and so should all of you. As it is Apple is charging us a premium.

I totally agree with you. Apple should deliver and I can confirm you there are 12 minis with perfect displays, seen them myself in stores and discussed this with all staff to take a look. All of them acknowledged that their phone on display was brighter and whiter then the one I have. Keep sending them back as long as you have that option. Maybe one day apple will grow balls and come out with this being a serieus issue.

perfect whites are another matter, but black pixels not turning off is a blunder for an Oled display. So the ones that you checked in the stores may have had the defect with Oled, i would much prefer a yellow screen compared to Oleds not turning black at this point, because atleast you can add a filter to the screen and adjust the whites to look more white.I would urge all the people who have perfect screens to please post the first 4 numbers of your iphone minis so that we can narrow down on the versions that we receive.

Jan 8, 2021 4:56 AM in response to ifromduluth

I understand your point but believe me the yellow tint is horrible to look at, compared to my previous X from 2017 it’s a nightmare. X display is perfect and it’s 3 years old. Have not checked the green or black pixel turn of on unit in store, that’s true. I tried the trick with the filters but this drastically changes max brightness wich you have to increase manually resulting in battery to drain much quicker, this is in my opinion not a solution but a workaround and should not be the case on the 12 series.
