iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Lots of people in Korea have this problem too, I just hope that it can be solved by software update.

When I boot up my iphone 12pro, and when I watch dark video especially including black color, the OLED doesn't show me the complete black color. I really hope that it is just a software bug and can be fixed by software update.

Yesterday I called Customer Service to check whether they knew anything new and could at least give us hope, but I can tell you that nobody of them, not even the Tier 2 technicians, are well-informed about the issue. He started to tell me obvious things and it sounded like I was the expert and he was the customer seeking for help.

I do expect no fix with the software upgrade rolling out tomorrow and Apple is definitely playing dumb.

Also, he said it is not the end of the world because it doesn’t prevent us from using the phone on a daily basis. It’s unbelievable.

Update from my side. UPS arrived 1 hour ago with the 4. iPhone 12 Pro. But the new one is slightly better (less green-tint), but has still raised blacks and flickering when playing back videos with black content.

Display has an G9P serialnumber („poor“ Samsung Display).

issue: raised blacks, flickering when playing back videos with black content

You know what? Mine is a replacement unit (I got it serviced on December 9th but it was just a useless waste of time).

At first I thought the screen was better as the black weren’t as raised (only slightly) and the green tint was pretty much non-existent.

And here comes the unpleasant surprise: in the span of 3-4 weeks the issue got worse and the green tint came back.

I think that something may or may not have interfered with my backup and I’m now back to the day when I decided to ask for a replacement. This makes me think that it’s software-related to some extent.

Like i said, i am keeping tabs on different factories using the info i find here and in Mac rumors and this way i can identify which one will have the green tint and which one not. At least until now i have been able to guess correctly. It seems like different factories are getting informed at different times and therefore once we find the week number of the not affected one, we can zero down on the factory using the serial number and voila.

got Both Iphone 12 pro max i've ordered today , and they both start with the serial F2 production week 51... and it's so much better than my 12 pro max i got day one , no yellow tinit , not blue tinit , color accuracy is very similar between both and finally i do not have this issue when in itch dark where on the older iphone 12 pro max if it wasn't at 100% brightness looking at a black wallpaper i had this gray glow in the dark where i was able to see the screen in the dark which is not logical, with the 2 new iphone 12 pro max i had , the issue can only be seen when brightness is at ZERO... and it's less pronouced...

so i will choose the one i prefer , but both are near perfect.

does someone knows the name of the windows Program to know who manufactured the panel ? cos i do not find it , and the fact that i have for a few days 3 Iphone 12 pr max would be usefull to collect data about them for me and you btw...

i'm installing parralels again xD

Thanks for the person who can help.

So what would you suggest? Seriously I’m fed up of wasting time as at the local authorised Apple retailer I go to isn’t a proper Apple Store, so the replacement process takes up to 5-6 days.

I can only try once more when I’m 100% sure that the replacement unit won’t be a faulty one.

So do you think we have 0% chance of solving the issue with a software update?

As I said, when I first used the phone after the replacement, the screen was heaps and bounds better with no green tint, then it progressively got worse over the week.

the first one looks better to me but i wonder something, what is the app or video with the clock you are using to see this green tint ?

cos i do not have any green tinit like this on the 3 iphone 1é pro max i've had..

and if someone knows the name of the windows program to know the display manufacturer of the iphone by hooking it up , i would love to know to try it on the 3 iphones i have to give you info..

thanks if someone can help

Jan 11, 2021 6:59 AM in response to ifromduluth

all i can say for sure is that of the 3 iphones i got which all start with the F2 serial number , nonce of them have this weird green glow.. yes oled doesn't turn 100% off in pitch black but it's more a light gray sort of LCD display aura that appears on the screen , specially on the first + it's ugly yellow tint

the 2 new ones i just got are near perfect i've just noticed that i can reproduce the issue but only when brightness is at 0% , at 1% to 100% on a black picture or video in HDR no issues at all ...

how do you guys know the display model number and manufacturer ? i thought it was thanks to a windows program, but i dunno it's name , does someone know it ? please ?

I've tried the OLEDX app but most feature are paid ones... lol

@amabile288

all i can say is that the 1st one got a yellow tinit and not the other two i just got , the first one had the grey LCD panel in a pitch black room when brightness was set from 0 to 99%/// cos at 100% brightness the screen was always black and i couldnt see it in the dark at all ...

so to me it have always been a software bug but related to some panels manufacturers...

on the new 2 iphone 12 pro max i got , they were on the latest IOS 14.3 and the issue is quite hard to reproduce, in fact and to be precise , bth behave the same , If broghtness when in pitch back room and looking to the black FALD HDR vieo or ain photos apps to a pure black picture , from brightness 1% to 100% perfect black no matter what ... but the weird thing is that at the minimum brightness i see a little bit of grey on both screen but it is totally acceptable cos u really need to look for it and i'm quite sure now it is software as apple said in an internal memo... i'm sure all of this will be fixed in the next betas... like they did on iphone 11... who had the same issue in summer.....

i'm currently restoring both phones from my imac pro but it will take some time , and it will eb interesting cos my backups were on 14.4 public beta , so i will see if something changed....

i'll kep you posted.

i'm gonna install windows and get their panels manufacturer... the weird thing is that the iphone i got day one start with F2, and both of the new ones too...

Apple will never publicly acknowledge this issue. That would create a story that would be picked up by tech blogs and then snowball into another antenna gate. And if it is hardware, which seems likely, can you imagine if they had to recall every single iPhone 12 Pro. It would be a disaster for an issue that basically no one notices or even understands. I’ve seen people reference their lcd phones as having true blacks. We are a minority.

Jan 11, 2021 3:23 PM in response to amabile288

You are far from the only one!! Same here, flickering blacks when watching YouTube, quite annoying especially with videos about space where the problem is far from subtle. When booting up, the Apple logo looks great with pure black for about 10 seconds, then the greenish background follows.

My Device: says production date (11/16) is 3 days after I bought it! Which is incorrect. I bought mine the day of the release (11/13) WTF??

F2 - China/Foxconn/Zhengzhou production week 45 ish?

Did I mentioned yesterday that my new 4. iPhone 12 Pro has another defect?

I was wondering yesterday what "clicky-sound" my new F17... iPhone 12 Pro does. I found out that the Taptic Engine seems to be broken. Everytime there is a Taptic-Feedback on the iPhone, the Taptic Engine makes an metal-click-sound. Seems like the magnet collides with the housing...

So the iPhone 12 Pro from the factory F17 is the worst one of all 4 iPhone 12 Pro!

Congratulations Apple!

Quality-control at it's best! 🤡
