iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Lots of people in Korea have this problem too, I just hope that it can be solved by software update.

When I boot up my iphone 12pro, and when I watch dark video especially including black color, the OLED doesn't show me the complete black color. I really hope that it is just a software bug and can be fixed by software update.

iPhone 12 pro F17 44 week

after two months of calling Apple and talking to the service centers in my area, I've almost lost all hope. yellow tint fixed with a mix of color filters and night shift but I have also green tint on a dark background .. Apple does not want to replace my iPhone because, so several people at Apple have told me, they are sure that the problem is software and Apple is working on a solution .. hopefully with 14.4 otherwise I'll sell my iPhone

It is a software problem for sure. Don’t worry guys, everything will be fine. I spoke to an apple representative today and they said that starting with iPhone 12 you can return your iPhones in 30 days, if you have completed 14 days then you need to call them in order to start a return, but I would wait for a software fix. I am done sending back so many iPhones.

@ifromduluth

100% agree with you , the only hardware related thing is if your screen has a yellwosih or bluish or greenish color calibration , but you can tweak it via accesibility .... i'm sure too that it is software because Apple Aknowleged the issue in an internla note to technicians telling them it will be fixed via software , and if it would be hardware the problem would reproduce 100% of the time at 0% , ro 100% brightness... and on the 1st 12 pro max i have, at 100% blacks are true blacks.... and on the 2 newer units i got hte issue is really negligable , and i only see this LCD type of gray light flicker when britgness is at 0% on both , after 1% to 100% the blacks stays perfects all the time in a pitch dark room, With HDR video or not, or a black picture in barious photos apps...

Every iphone have the raised blacks. I’m almost certain its software issue. If you put the brightness to like 40-50%, turn on dark mode, go to a dark room, open up settings and the software update window and then scroll up and down you can clearly see pixels being lit and then if you leave it there for 2-3 secs the pixels shut off and true blacks are being displayed. Now if you put the brightness to 100% the pixels stay turned off all the time. Its impossible not to see. You dont even need a pitch black room for this too see, a really dark one is enough and if you pretend you cant see it you should get your vision checked... Now for the issue itself Im almost 100% sure its to prevent the purple smearing. Again in the same dark room with screen on 50% brightness scroll fast up and down in the settings you see no smearing appear because when you scroll pixels are being lit. Now put the brightness to 100 and scroll fast again you can clearly see purple smearing on the edges.

So thats why the blacks are not being turned off. Its up to apple to make them turn off all the time then we will see constant smearing. I dont mind that tho its better than LCD type of blacks and saves you battery aswell.

THERE IS A ISSUE WITH IPHONE 12 PRO'S LIKE MINE WHERE THE SCREEN IS FLICKERING AND USUALLY YOU WOULD NOTICE IT ON A DARK ROOM. AND THEY REPLACED MY IPHONE AND DID ALL THE RESTORE AND RESET AND STILL THE SAME. I JUST CAME FROM THE APPLE STORE AND SAID IT IS NOW A KNOWN ISSUE AND THEY WON;'T REPLACE IT NOW SINCE THEY GET THE MEMO, AND MAYBE THE UPDATE 14.4 WOULD FIX IT. AND THE ONLY SOLUTION THEY SAID FOR ME IS TO WAIT. PLEASE ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE AND CHECK ON IT COZ I'VE SEEN ON THE APPLE SUPPORT FORUM THERE ARE TONS OF ISSUES REGARDING THIS AND MOSTLY ON THE OLED PANEL FOR THE PRO MODELS. THANKS

Yeah about the flickering I aint sure. It surely has something to do with the pixels being lit on movement or smth. When you play a video the screen is not static. Go to youtube search “black screen 10 hours” then again go to dark room put brightness at 50% and play the video in landscape mode. It does flicker on and off. Now pause the video, wait a few secs and pixels do turn off. So yeah basically they wanted to prevent the purple smear but didnt test in on videos. At this point I dont think they will fix the blacks being lit but they will somehow fix video flickering. If they will make the screen act as normal aka turn off pixels all the time they will probably get more complaints about the purple smearing when scrolling compared to pixels being lit since the average joe cant see it or dont care.

Ofc for me and most true blacks would be better even with smearing because it will look better, prevent flickering and save battery. But who knows what Apple is thinking....

@cristianro one last test to confirm that you have a perfectly working display, do your greys smear in the settings app when you scroll? Normally with a perfectly black display, it should smear because I am sure that apple has done the tinting to mitigate the smearing. When i have perfect blacks above 20 percent i have smearing in settings app but when i am below 20 percent and not perfect blacks then the smearing is not visible at all. It has something to do with the brighness levels, apple has activated the green tinting at lower brightness levels and at higher brightness levels it is not necessary and therefore this is a solid proof that it is a software issue and not hardware. Simple test to prove this to everyone is put your display brightness to 100 percent and scroll through your settings app, you will see the grey color smearing purple or pink and this will not exist on other brightness levels. The reason we all have it different is because our displays are unfortunately not able to produce the same brighness nits since they are Organic displays and therefore the uniforminty differs due to inconsistent manufacturing, the good news is that iphone can calculate at what nit the iphone is at and therefore the tint kicks in to mitigate the smearing and hence apple can correct it using the nit algorithm system that they use to punch in the green tint for smearing.

Jan 13, 2021 7:46 AM in response to ifromduluth

All they need to do so that they use the smearing technique (because believe me scrolling the settings app while on full brighness, the smearing make the display look really less smooth) and mitigate the green tint is to reduce the time that the green tint stays on, from one second to a few miliseconds. The displays from iphone X all use a display that has 120 hz touch response (not to be mistaken with refresh rate), so it should be achievable. Finally i can put my head to rest that it is not a hardware issue, no matter whatever anyone says here.

Jan 13, 2021 8:54 AM in response to cristianro

Yes, please do, this would be a very important point. If you see any pink or purple smearing in settings app please let us know. Normally I don’t see any smearing except if it is below 70 percent. On all brightness levels other than 70- 100 percent, scrolling doesn’t produce even a hint of pink which is smearing. My screen has perfect blacks without even flickering in videos between 70-100 percent brightness and shows pink smearing in settings.

The level of delusion is real. Sorry it's not a smearing method by Apple or something. Stop trying to make excuses for Apple. No other Oled iPhone have this ''anti smearing method'' nor some other Iphone 12. It's an hardware defect, period.

My first 12 PM had really noticeable raised blacks and flickering. My second one from a month later had really less raised blacks and flickering than the first one. A non consistent software method to prevent smaering ? No, sorry.

Moreover, my brother's iPhone 12 has not any sign of raised blacks or flickers at all. It turns black instantly like it should, at any brightness level. Same iOS version, so why if it's software ? Stop this delusion please. People have to wake up, it's a hardware problem. Maybe they can try to correct it or negate it by software, I don't know. But it's simply not a software problem.
