iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Lots of people in Korea have this problem too, I just hope that it can be solved by software update.

When I boot up my iphone 12pro, and when I watch dark video especially including black color, the OLED doesn't show me the complete black color. I really hope that it is just a software bug and can be fixed by software update.

i m waiting for ther public beta so this means that it was not a software issue , cos for their wording it seems more like an hardware issue, and they try to reduce the green or gray glow with software, i do not care if it really works..; i'll terst it on public beta on my 8th iphone 12 pro max, but Apple could not make a recall as of now, because they need to sell and dont put the brakes on iphone 12 success, but i bet we will see a recall after iphone 13 will be released.

Just updated my iPhone 12 Pro to 14.5 Public Beta 2 to see if the issue is fixed. Some bad news here - it isn't completely. Defect used to reproduce when most of the pixels needed to turn off (mostly black image). Now it reproduces in reverse - glow can be seen if most of the pixels are lit, e.g. open some photo in fullscreen and check black borders in total dark. Maybe it's only my phone, but I guess people got too excited and made premature conclusion that problem is gone.

Upd. Also, I've observed that in some "Local Dimming Test" videos on youtube app, left and right borders are blinking with grey glow once a second while the main video area is completely black.

same updated a few hours ago with dev beta, and yes boot sequence has been modify to not show the grey flicker , and viewing a black wallpaper in photos fullscreen doesnt reproduce the issue, but it's not perfect for example, go watch the video called local dimming HDR FALD on youtube , put it in landscape without zooming, and u'll see that the black borders on the side still flickers, and more important, each time u change brithgness on this video or similar one's i bet now i see the grey flicker for s split second when i exit control center, every time, before it was not happening 100% of the time..

so yeah great improvement but as apple stated in their patch notes, they tried to reduce the issue , not mitigate it, which makes me think maybe it is an hardware issue.. btw the yellow tint stay the same, still have the use the color picker in accessiblity to change the iphone hue to a more bluewish white,, which is 10 times more pleasing to the eye.

It’s very frustrating.

I switched from the iPhone 11 to this (12 pro) because of the oled screen and this is what they have to offer?

It’s embarrassing. There are 400$ phones with better screens than this 1200$ one.

Apple, get your sh**t toguether and solve the problem, this is unnaceptable.

At first (before the 14.5 beta 2) the issue was mitigated by just using a non-dark wallpaper, but with this “fix” the only way to use the phone without getting frustrated is to use it without dark mode, because now even the lists are fu**ed up.

Apple. FIX THIS or offer a remplacement.

i agree. it's not acceptable, that's why i think i may have to return to them my 8th iphone 12 pro max, and order a new one to see if maybe the issue has been 100% fixed on iphone you order from now on, the issue is that i 've noticed that the last 2 iphones 12 pro max ordered 6Th of February , were made in week 51.. so they are not even made from a more recent time...

does someone knows if the latest batch of iphone 12 like made near the end. of january or february are still affected too ?

cos yeah i was happy to see that it's partially fixed, but you can clearly see that it's a weird fix , watching the apple logo changing 3 times it's own hue when u boot it up...

Feb 18, 2021 7:20 AM in response to Micaltech

yes the weird gray band on landscape in youtube appeared since day one on my 1st Iphone pro max and The 7 others i had and it's still there.... i think it's a bug with youtube app cos i'm sure other video app whu can show the volume while playing while not reproduce the issue.

this 14.5 beta 2 update greatly fixed the issue on photos to me , but when on youtube watching any dark video, it's okay but as soon as i invoke control center to change brighness at any level ( even at 100% that is weird.. ) when the control center is gone i can notice the grey or green flicker for a split second and then it swtiches to perfect black... i will do more test. and i've ordered my 8th iphone pro max to see if i got a newer model , the 8th one i got can still be returned until the 23th.

So weird , it's really not fixed on videos , yes on youtube for safari it's better, so at first i said to myself maybe it' the youtube app.. but just try this, launch an apple TV show like servant, and pause as soon as the video starts or as soon as the apple TV logo disappears and i can see something that wasn't present before this fix , the famous grey tint LCD style backlight but now it's stay forever on any video playing on the Tv app paused on a black screen. it's so weird cos by fixing the flickering on photos or boot , now they worsen the experience for video ... but i'm less worried cos the black bars on landscape on the TV app from Apple stays perfectly black... so this might be fixable via software too. cos it happens on apps, but not in safari on youtube ( but i was suprised to notice that youtube on safari offers me only 720 p max on a 4K video .... i thought the VP9 codec would work on safari too ??

Feb 18, 2021 4:33 PM in response to akbar028

i've tried again on TV app and it didn't reproduce but without bringing control center and turning the phone from one landscape to the other makes the screen flicker for a sec.. that's really weird ....

BUT now i know for sure it is software cos i added a movie on VLC, and in landcape moving brightness , changing landscape orientation , i wasn't able to reproduce the issue... so it's a strange bug that for sure will be fixed soon for those like me who still have it somtimes on particular occasions... the bad news is that i've ordered a 9th iphone 12 pro max this afternoon , to try to push my luch thinking maybe i'll get aunit that was produced in january or february.. and it's already on it's way.. so i'll keep you guys posted if the new one is better , 100% fixed out of the box, or worse than the one i have.

i wonder if apple will not send me an email like ' dear customer we noticed that you returned to us a ton of iphone 12 pro max , please be careful cos we will not accept future returns... like amazon does to some customers who have a retun rate to high...

i've phones apple this afternoon asking them if i was to order a new phones i had more chances that this issue would be fixed, but the person i had was so bad, i told her that apple aknownleged the issue on public beta 14.5 beta 2 notes, and she told me that they didn't know about this, that it must be me, i was so angry at one point that i hang up on her.... sometimes some employees are not fit and up to date with the info... nut usualy they are efficient i must say.

have a good week end.

Feb 19, 2021 2:24 AM in response to Joe_moore2004

i'm the crazy one who ordered each two weeks and returned 8 iphones already, i've ordered one 12 pro max 512 Blue again yesterday from apple to see if this time the production week. and serial do not start with F2, FZ or G0 ( 6 i got were F2, 1 G0 and one FZ )...

i'm gonna check if out of the box the issue has been mitigated from factory and then update it to public beta to see which one i have, cos i can still return the last one i got , but i didn't get who was made after 2021... expect the First one i preorder and got day one the 13th of november , most were week 51 or 52..

please keep giving feedback to apple that in video depending on the app using control center or not, switching from a landcape to another make the gray or green flicker still happening.

the more we give them feedback the more they'll know it's not entirely fixed. they told me that they do not monitor these forums at all... so dissapointed that Apple didnt made a statement for exigeant ppl like us who have good vision and notice this issue, i'm sorry but in France and Europe too this iphone is 1609 euros. it should'nt have any issue ( if it's hardware which i doubt a bit)

Feb 19, 2021 3:20 AM in response to angealexiel

@angealexeil, don’t worry you are not the only one who exchanged a lot. Many people in this group have sent back their iPhones including me, I did it 7 times and finally settled for the one with no tiny but with a slight glow, which is now gone except when you pull down the control center but it disappears very quickly, so for me this is already a huge improvement. I have perfect blacks in videos and photos at all brightness levels, so I am satisfied. But then I am also using a iPhone 12 mini 64 gb version and I can understand why people who have bought the more expensive versions expect a perfect device, and they should.

thx @ifromduluth

So about the new iphone 12 pro max i got it's serial start with G0, instead of F2 , less yellowish tint , still from week 51.. but the issue is less present compared to the F2 models but still here after updating to 14.5 beta 2 specialy on videos app... but i'm gonna settle with this one now, cos i think otherwise i'll never take time to fully enjoy the iphone... lol

Feb 19, 2021 11:18 PM in response to ifromduluth

I can confirm! I sold my iPhone 12 and got a 12 Pro last week. I checked on Chipmunk Klantenservice and it says my unit was produced on the 3rd week of January, less than a month ago. It sill has raised blacks although it’s much less noticeable, as well as an annoying bug causing the Apple logo to flash and disappear at startup. Not a big dal as I read it’s a software glitch that should be gone once installing iOS 14.5.

Apple definitely lost its attention to details.

Feb 20, 2021 2:54 AM in response to Giop_91

ye^i can confirm that one of the 9 Iphone pro max i have , one had this weird bug of the apple logo flashing and reapparing.. but from waht i heard it's fixed on 14.5 beta 2.

'im still happy to have order a9th phone, cos the yellowish tinit that is present on all the units i have, i've noticed that the G0 models have a less yellow tint. but the fact that the problem still can be noticed on some video apps, even by not moving brigtness just by switching to the other landcape mode in some apps, u can see a quick gray flicker but it's really quick and not very annoying. but i'm sure it will be fixed cos after further testing one app doesn't reproduce the grey flicker issue it's VLC when u copy movies on it. and it's weird cos each video app behaves differently , some exibit the issue when exiting control center after changing brghtness but it's for a split second.. and if u do test this during the day i noticed that even in a pitch black room. , you need 5 minutes to get your eyes to accomodate and to see the problem , but i guess the final 14.5 will fix the remaning grey flicker issue on some videos..
