iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

Lots of people in Korea have this problem too, I just hope that it can be solved by software update.

When I boot up my iphone 12pro, and when I watch dark video especially including black color, the OLED doesn't show me the complete black color. I really hope that it is just a software bug and can be fixed by software update.

Yeah I think this is a iOS 14.2 issue, I have a 12 pro max which I only updated last night from 14.1 and this issue started occurring. The other thing I’ve noticed is that in only occurs when the screen is under motion. If the screen is static for a few moments the flickering stops and begins once I start using the phone again. It could be have been implemented to prevent OLED smearing but I would rather have smearing than this, especially in a dark room

I have a 12 pro max. I have the issue but only after updating to 14.2. The pro max ships with 14.1 and I didn’t have the issue. Because of how wide scale this issue is, I have confidence that it’s a Software issue, as apples quality control should have noticed this because of how widespread this is, it’s occurring on all iPhone 12 models. Apple Support have no idea what it is, so I think the amount it’s probably already been raised it will be fixed. 14.3 beta probably minimised the issue but Apple should promptly push a 0.0.1 update to fix this.

I can’t say for certain if it is not a hardware issue, but because of how wide scale this is on all models of the iPhone 12 and by the look of it only occurring on 14.2+, I think it’s probably a software issue. Still very annoying though

The panels of the iPhone 12/mini and 12 pros are different, with different peak brightness’s. Due to the wide scale spread of this issue ranging in all iPhone 12/12 pro models I don’t think it’s a hardware issue, but I could be wrong. I didn’t have this issue in iOS 14.1 which shipped but only experienced it after updating to 14.2.

If it is a hardware, by the look of how wide scale ranging in all models and all regions meaning it’s not just a batch of screens but most likely the whole iPhone 12 screen supply chain, which is even though possible, is highly unlikely due to Apples Quality Control Standards.

As for the 14.3 beta not fixing the issue, most likely again it could be that Apple didn’t resolve the issue or it hadn’t emerged at the time of pushing out the first 14.3 beta. That’s why I think pushing a 14.2.1 update would be more likely. I am no expert when it comes to screens, but just how wide scale this issue is with all models of the 12 it’s hard to believe that it is a hardware issue

Oh I did not realise the first image, I probably just didn’t notice properly until updating to 14.2

As for the 12 vs 12 pro panels, you are correct, they are the same but are software limited, my bad. However the oled panels for the 12 and 12 pro are made by LG and the panels for the 12 pro max and 12 mini are made by Samsung. That’s why I’m skeptical to believe that it is a hardware issue or more so a problem with the panel it could be an issue with some other part of the device causing this issue. As this is occurring on two seperate manufacturers panels.

It could very well be a hardware issue, and in that case I would predict judging by how wide scale it is, pretty much all iPhone 12 models would need to be recalled/serviced.

But I find it hard to believe that two of the best oled manufacturers some how missed this issue in their quality control but again just optimistic that it can be solved with a software update rather than a full hardware service.

After posting my comment along with the pic today, I read all the posts and noticed that a lot users are facing Auto brightness issue on iphone 12 too. Tried this on my wifey's 12. While the brightness levels looks ok on her phone auto adjustment for brightness doesn't work. The only time it works is when the toggle is switched on. After that it doesn't respond at all..seems like a lot issues on iphone 12. I was hoping that I will upgrade from pro to pro max but looks like we got issues there too..

I’m having the same issue on my Pro Max, the brightness is not that great with auto brightness turned off. And also the screen is jumping to higher than the max allowed slider brightness at times, maybe a Ambient Light Sensor Issue. Also as I have noticed, a lot of people are experiencing a warmer than normal display, I too have experienced this. I don’t know what they have done to this years line up but looks like they’ve completely botched the display

Interesting, with your 12 pro, does the green tint occur when you “use” the device, and what I mean by that is, does it only occur when you begin objects on the screen begin to move?

I have noticed with the 12 pro max, I’ve noticed that the green tint issue only occurs when there is movement on the screen, and if the picture is stagnant for a while, the blacks will return to normal with the pixels being off, therefore could be and issue with the touch interface.

Still thinking it may be a oled smearing or smudge prevention software technique that it’s glitching or incorrectly coded but now I have found the peak brightness of my display is jumping above the max allowed slider brightness and also the colour temperature of the screen by default is quite warm, had to apply a colour filter to correct this so there could be a definite issue with the display and sensors

Im not sure what they have done to this years panels, but seems more likely now that they could’ve run into more and more issues with their quality control due to the whole line up being OLED increasing the overall demand for the displays. The past three OLED iPhones displays have primarily been manufactured with Samsung so increasing the amount of manufacturers has seemed to have reduced the quality of the screens considerably.
