iPhone 12 OLED Screen Issue

Hello. I bought two iPhone 12 and both has the same issue. In dark surrounding on any brightness lower than 90-100% screen has this ugly glowing! Black pixels are not turning off in dynamic scenes. In static scene black pixels turning off after few seconds.

My video shows it in video and in clock app.

And this is comparison by another one person who have this problem but with iPhone 12 Pro. iPhone 12 Pro vs iPhone XS screen.

That’s not normal at all. I post it to support and they said I should wait more. That’s just great...

SO after getting two brand new iphone 12 pro max, after ordering Like 9 models , i can confirm all fot this weird LCD like screen in pitch black room on a blakc wallappaer in full screen in photos apps ( to reproduce the issue easily ) or even by jut booting each phones out of the box in my bathroom with no lights on , ( you see this grey flicker...

I got 2 12 pro max today starting with F2 week 51 of production, like most of the ones i got , it's way better than the last one i got starting with G0... the issue is still present but barely visible specialy on one model + no yellow tint...

So i send pics to apple, and they confirmed to me THAT THEY DO NOT READ THESE FORUMS... AT ALL...

if u cant this minor issue ( in their opinion and i agree ) to be fixed , you need to call them and spend 30 min or 1 hour max with tech support and explain them all of this.. issue is software cos it never happen with brigthness at 100% and when the phone boot at first, the screen is perfect , you see the apple logo and then the grey flicker comes for a few seconds, it means that so cores components that initialize when booting up like all the sensor in the notch must be causing a little software bug that most ppl do not see.

they do have enough reports of this specific issue.. if all the people here were to call them maybe they'll will really look into the issue.. i've send pictures to them, spent some time with them, and it's the only solution for a fix to be coming ASAP.

hope most of you will calll them . otherwise they may fix it when 13 is released..

I think we should keep tweeting/messaging big tech youtubers like MKBHD. Snazzy Labs is another channel which was able to bring apple’s attention to some problems regarding his faulty imac pro stand. LTT might even help. Maybe we should start a hashtag or something of that nature to bring attention to this issue. The more we wait without doing anything, the more apple acts as if everything’s perfectly fine. I think we deserve an acknowledgment coming from apple at the very least.

As I did with my iPhone 12 Pro max.

I would highly recommend for you all to return the phone and wait for the iPhone 13 series or just pick up an iPhone 11 which has an LCD display (save yourself £200)

Lowlight performance is almost identical as both iPhone 11 and 12 base models have the same 1/2.55" prehistoric sensor. Real-world performance between A13 bionic and A14 is negligible unless you're doing editing or heavy gaming. Last year, exactly the same person leaked details that were almost 100 per cent accurate for iPhone 12.

Just looking at the before this years iPhone 13 Pro is going to be the one to get :) -issues

Probably a combination of hardware/software issue but only Apple will know and if it is a combination of both will make fix it harder, since as you can see from pics I posted compared iPhone 12 with older iPhones, will change colors more on some phones than others depending on how bad panel is.

If all phones have greenish tint they could easy fix it same way that truetone and nightshift shifts the colors on the phone. In fact reason I had to return my iPhone 12 is because of the strong green tint at all brightness levels! The same way nightshift does making all colors look more yellow at all brightness since it reduces the blue color produced by phone screen. Could probably fix it a bit by messing with settings but then if Apple comes out with software fix colors will all be off again!

In order to reduce PWM flickering on the iPhone Xs and iPhone Xs Max,

we’ll use a feature of iOS called “Display Accommodations > Reduce

White Point”.

Yeah already mentioned that link before and green tint on my phone was not only in darker area but all brightness levels as can be seen in picture I posted several pages back, which means I probably got bad batch of panels way worse than normal for Apple, since article even says Apple usually better than other's with green tint.

"If you ask why devices from Samsung or Apple or others do not have display tints, it’s probably because the manufacturing process used in those OLED panels are either different (there are other ways of manufacturing OLED displays too like Color Filtering or using Electron Beams) or the method being used is more precise which cancels out any human error."

I just assumed OLED was as good or at least consistent as LCD displays by now since they have been around a few years now but obviously not the more research I do on the issue!

"While Samsung certainly can’t catch a break this year, it’s worth noting that virtually no popular smartphone launch in recent memory avoided the infamous green tint screen issue in its entirety. The iPhone 11 line had it, the Google Pixel 4 series had it (yeah, yeah, it’s as popular as 2020 China), the OnePlus 8 Pro had it, the OnePlus Nord is suffering pretty hard from it

at this very moment, many other Galaxy devices were affected beforehand, and so on."

Guessing they fix it just by reducing output of green pixels if all iPhones affected like I'm guessing though have no clue how widespread it is and didn't want to deal with it or wait for software update to fix so I returned mine. Otherwise loved the phone so hopefully iPhone 13 won't have it so I can finally upgrade again.

One other fact, I think it is not software related like it was on the 11 series. I compared my iPhone 12 mini with 5 devices in 2 shops running iOS 14.3 and identical screen settings, they had a perfect crisp bright white screen without yellow tint. It’s clearly depending on panel used from wich manufacturer, if you have a yellow one it’s bad luck and not seen as a defect by the apple Genius Bar guys. No defect=no help or replacement, case closed. Some of the owners of the new 12 serie even don’t notice it till you compare to 11 or XS. The panels from XR and 7-8-se wich are lcd panels have better whites and are more krisp then the 12 serie....So not upgrade to 12 is only solution.....

I totally agree with you. Apple should deliver and I can confirm you there are 12 minis with perfect displays, seen them myself in stores and discussed this with all staff to take a look. All of them acknowledged that their phone on display was brighter and whiter then the one I have. Keep sending them back as long as you have that option. Maybe one day apple will grow balls and come out with this being a serieus issue.

I’m so disappointed by this issue... I have it on a near day-one iPhone 12 Pro, had extensive chat with level 2 support in November, i’ve sent videos to them, they acknowledged there was an issue but told me this will probably be gone with an IOS update. No news since and no official statement from Apple.

This evening I took time to record a side by side video with my 12 Pro compared to my XS. Filmed with my 11 Pro, fixed focus and « fixed » luminosity.

https://youtu.be/0mPd_ayGAq4

Is this worse or same as what you are experiencing ?

I have the « fake oled » issue too, black pixels does not turn of before staying 2-3s still, even in native apps and settings.

Perfect oled blacks at the start of the boot with the bootloader but raised blacks / grey / LCD-like panel as soon as the IOS takes the lead.

Guys so I just got news from apple executive that they are trying to fix this problem and factories are being sent updated calibration details, so probably the update will target the factories and the production week. From now on could everyone please post their first 2 characters of serial number followed by production week and then also yes or no raised blacks. This would help a lot.

mine is:

47

yes (raised blacks)

It is a software problem for sure. Don’t worry guys, everything will be fine. I spoke to an apple representative today and they said that starting with iPhone 12 you can return your iPhones in 30 days, if you have completed 14 days then you need to call them in order to start a return, but I would wait for a software fix. I am done sending back so many iPhones.
