iPhone won’t send pics to Android

Ever since the last iOS update I’ve lost the ability to send pictures to Android users. MMS is enabled, I’ve tried resetting network settings, and with iMessage turned off and on with nothing working. Had anyone else experienced this recently?

Apple engineers gave me a reply back finally and told me they suggest that I back up my iCloud and then I go into my settings - general - reset - erase all content and settings.

it worked, but I’m ****** I had to do that because of all of the unfavorable hoops Apple put me though during this process.

at first the man denied it’s an apple problem, “99% of the time it’s the carrier”.

and then I had to reach back out to them after they said they would call me.. which I didn’t receive, and now I have to redownload all of my apps again and set up my phone like I just spent $1000 bucks on a new phone.

It's almost certainly the image size and not any other setting you are trying. I often send messages back and forth with my siblings, all but one of us has iPhones - the other has Android. I can text the group from any device using iMessage (iPhone, MacBook, iPad) with no issues UNLESS I try to send an image that is too large for MMS. If your message exceeds defined intercarrier file size limits (usually 300-600 KB), the message gets rejected and is not delivered. iOS is smart enough to re-encode images when texting, sending them as jpeg rather than HEIF, but other file types may not cooperate. When I take a picture with my phone, I can send it without issue because of the re-encoding. The times when I do get the dreaded "not delivered" are essentially always copy-paste from a browser, where the image I am copying is either an incompatible file type or too large for my single sibling's Android to accept.

I have spent so much time on Twitter, voice and AT&T forums that they have credited my bill some for the hassles.

Here is what I believe:

It is the quality of the upload cellular signal.

Download an app called "Coverage Map". Turn off WiFi. Open the app. Click the alarm clockish looking icon at the top and measure the signal.

In my case at my house in the heart of Silicon Valley I am getting .1mbps up AND down. POINT 1!

When I go 5 blocks Southwest, two bars, no issues.

Now, want to try something bizarre?

  1. Open an image in your albums and get ready to message an Android friend.
  2. Put the phone flat on your desk.
  3. Take a 12-16 OZ filled bottle of water. The plastic bottles. Put it on the desk upright at the top of the phone just above the ear speaker slot.
  4. Turn ON airplane mode
  5. Wait 30 seconds - maybe 45.
  6. Turn OFF airplane mode
  7. Your phone will search for the cellular network. In my case I get 2 bars
  8. Immediately send your image
  9. After about a minute give or take the phone will drop signal strength and will fail to send images again.

Now, maybe that is just me. But it works when I get frustrated enough or MUST send an image via MMS to an Android friend. Apologies if any of this posted in the previous 8 pages. Have not read that all in a while.

Of course I’ve tried a general reset. And the issue started the day the iOS updated

But if you read other posts, you appear to be the only one with that exact problem. While others have similar (but not identical) symptoms, most have fixed it with a variety of solutions. So the problem is your phone uniquely. Restore your phone to factory settings and set it up as New. Do you still have the problem? If you do it is either hardware or a problem with your cellular account setup on your carrier’s end.

I'm on my third iPhone in four years, now an iPhone 12 Max. I've had the same problem on all three iPhones with the same four friends with Androids. This is a problem that began well over a year ago. I could send images to those with iPhones fine. When I sent an image to one of those Androids I got "Message undelivered" or "Message failed to send". Message text to those phones sent okay, just not images.

I ran the 14.7 IOS update on my phone today and it seems to have fixed it. The only other thing I did was to cycle "iMessage" off for a minute then back on again.

I'm going to wait a few days before I pronounce this as "fixed".
