Some of us have been handed a nasty surprise from Apple after recently updating to IOS 14.2. Prior to iOS 14.2 our phones had a feature called headphone safety which notified us that the volume of our headphones was too high and lowered it back down autonomously. This feature was mandated for EU states but it was optional for everywhere else, essentially if you lived outside of Europe, you were able to turn this feature off.

Once you update your phone to iOS 14.2 there is no longer an option to disable this headphone safety feature, whether you live in the EU or outside of Europe (I live in Canada). Okay, so what’s the big deal? Well, first thing, ethically speaking, medical concerns such as hearing loss, which this feature is trying to prevent, are essentially a personal choice, which should not have any interference with a Tech company.

More importantly, the feature has been designed terribly. It cannot differentiate between Bluetooth headsets, Bluetooth speakers, and Bluetooth receivers for your car radio. We typically listen to music quite loud on Bluetooth speakers, since they are typically further away from us, however since the phone cannot differentiate between a Bluetooth speaker and Bluetooth headphones, it assumes your listening to headphones too loud and lowers the volume for you to 50%. If you higher the volume manually it will continue to lower it every 20-30 minutes. This experience becomes dangerous when driving as it forces you to either pull over or reach for your phone and fiddle with the buttons while driving, which can have dangerous consequences.

We have tried reaching out to apple, and we were met with disappointing results. The recommended help was to submit your feedback to apples feedback page: https://www.apple.com/feedback/ Upon accessing the feedback page, there isn’t even an option to report any feedback for iOS 14.2 bugs/ features.

Shockingly, posts submitted to the apple community boards/forums kept being deleted, and I was personally threatened to have my apple ID deleted and ISP blocked if I continued to raise awareness in regards to this issue. This is truly a first for Apple, in 13 years that I’ve been a customer, I never thought I would get threatened this way. So one must assume there is no help coming, no consideration, no willingness to engage in discourse by Apple in regards to this with the impacted users.

Apples mythological existence was largely propelled by the introduction of the iPod, a device that made it easy for us to enjoy music, how we wanted, where we wanted. Today, amongst so many limitations due to the global pandemic, all we really ask is to please, let us enjoy our music uninterrupted, un-convoluted, we need this right now, for some of us, music is the only thing we have left to keep us afloat.

Please allow those who are not within the EU the ability to turn this feature off; we are all conscientious adults able to manage our hearing.

This is not a smear campaign against Apple, we just want to be heard, much like we just want to hear our music.

Your statement that people need to let Apple know you are unhappy..........is why I said that you are not doing that here on this user to user only forum. Apple isn't here. Only other users. If you want to let Apple know you're not happy, I provided a link for you to express your thoughts directly with Apple where it will be actually read.

The rest of your response makes absolutely no sense to me. I was ONLY letting you know you're not communicating with Apple here and giving a link to let you do so.

It depends on how you suggest contacting Apple. I've seen several posts from people a bit miffed about this where it was either suggested to start a "class action" or alert the media or other methods to get Apple's attention. Those types of posts will be deleted by the Forum Hosts. Simply suggesting people contact Apple via the Feedback Link which has been posted multiple times in this thread will not be removed.

There’s a middle ground between those two methods/styles of communication though isn’t there? Those have often been banned also. I don’t know the rules, and maybe it’s up to the personal discretion of the moderator anyway, but perhaps it’s when we use language like “let’s all do this” rather than “you can do this if you like”. I’ve had a post deleted myself and I cannot for the life of me work out why. And in addition, I myself haven't seen any “class action, alert the media” style posts (though I believe you entirely that there have been some) but I think Apple should just accept this as feedback rather than dismiss it. I’m not specifically saying take the class action stuff seriously, but they should get aggregated feedback on issues like this fed back to see the depth of feeling. The fact they don’t shows how little they’re listening to users. And that, in turn, results in “features” like this one. They might have all the money in the world, but they’re gradually eroding their USP with less usable phones generally and this ridiculous war on headphones specifically.

I use a speaker for work and since the last update it now turns the volume down when I’m working which is annoying as I have the phone volume set to fairly low but it affects the speaker volume but at least I can turn it back up for another 20 minutes before it does it aga

The most annoying thing with the volume control is when I’m out running as it does it then and I’m halfway through a run and have to slow down get my phone out to turn it back up so loose my pace and stride.

As adults we should be allowed to control the volume speakers as it’s our freedom of choice to listen to what we want and how loud we want to.

I have reported some defects :

Firstly the volume/exposure of bone conducting headphones is nothing like the tracking in apple health. Therefore I am being incorrectly notified, this is a defect with the feature.

Secondly if "Reduce Loud Sounds" is set to "Don't allow" in content/privacy restrictions then these volume notifications seem to get stuck in an infinite loop, notifying me every couple of seconds. Thats quite a dangerous defect when I am cycling and to get audio back at all I have to stop, get the phone out, unlock it and so on. Setting back to allow seems to resolve this.

Support have told me that the feature is force enabled in order to meet regulations in my country (UK).

I have reported an additional defect that the changes in interpretation of standards, which directly affects users, should only affect new devices. I think this is actually a complaint tbh and it's unclear how I make one of those. I get that different manufacturers will interpret standards differently, and I want to be able to use that information as part of my decision making process when I buy a new device, not have the new interpretation dropped onto my existing device.

It is 100% the issue. I confirmed it with apple the first day I got my 12 pro max and I verified it by erasing and restoring my 11 pro max. If you simply update to 14.2 and above, no problem. Once you're on 14.2 if you erase and restore you will not be able to turn this off.

Again, this is confirmed by Apple and verified with several devices....same behavior EVERY time.

I think this is it. I don’t know what the USA thing is, I haven’t been following every post, but I’m in the UK and this issue is here.

Its got to the point now where I’m not updating any Apple device any more, because I just can’t trust them. I *never* would have anticipated them doing this - effectively removing the ability to play music through many external speakers - so what else could they do? Anything. Turn off screens under the guise of protecting our eyes (though really it would be because we didn’t buy the new version of the external Apple screen)? Remove non-Apple email compatibility? Ban netflix or spotify because why aren’t you using Apple apps? I wish I hadn’t updated the ios at all, and there’s no way I’m making that mistake again.

I switched to an iPhone because my entire family uses them and me and my engineer friends all used Android. I am so regretting this decision as I see more and more Apple imposing itself on my device use freedom. That's not to say eventually Google will do that as well. At least I had more freedoms to do what I wanted, and at a far less of a cost. Wish I discovered this before the 14 day return window. I would have promptly returned it and purchased a Pixel 5

And you should deal with Apple regarding your US issued iPhone or wait for an update. Or maybe T-Mobile. I have a US provisioned phone, I have both switches and do not have this volume feature activated. If you know other people with iPhones do a little test and ask them to show you whether they have one switch or two.
