iPhone 12 screen brightness issue

It s happening to me when I am under the sun for 30-40 minutes. Gets significantly darker without any reason (brightness settings are all max and manual with True Tone disabled). If I go to the brightness menu settings still brightness is at max level but I cannot restore brightness at this level and the screen is significantly darker

This is exactly what I experienced a week ago which prompted me to do a factory reset and a fresh setup. It didn’t help. Today, while outside taking photos, the screen dimmed again. And while trying to pull up the brightness back, I dragged the level to the lowest and the whole screen turned black and I could not do anything to reset back the brightness. I waited for a few hours indoors before it magically brightened up a bit enough for me to find the controls and pull up the brightness.

not sure if this is a bug or I have a lemon..

Compared my old XS with new iPhone 12 mini brightness is very dull .. looks like warm background light. There is no sharpness in picture taken when compared two phones. Apple Hyped too much on iPhone 12. Hope they release some fix for this ..otherwise no use paying premium price

I've been doing some research and just paying attention to my own phone. This seems to happen when the phone is overheating. Perhaps Apple needs a better cooling system. Not sure software can fix this.

Holy crap. My phone got so hot it put a heat stain on my dining table. This is so dangerous. Called apple and they will send me a new phone but I’m wondering if this issue will occur again. Crossing fingers

Tried what? I haven’t suggested any remedy just a reason why this is happening

either software code written to make it happen

or degrading batteries switch to low power mode

with my phone cool, 3/4 better full, the phone goes into low battery mode — why? To protect the battery and screen

I've experienced this issue both on my iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 12 PRO. I Called costumer service they adviced me reset my general settings. For me its a huge mistake. If I want to use my phone with full brightness I must use it exact settings that I made on setting including deactivated auto modes (true tone, brightness etc.) However I cant use it. Its was not helpful experience for me. I am really upset about that apple issue. Where is freedom of my desires?

Question : Can anyone tell me where can i report this issue so Apple geniuse developers can fix that ? or does it happen after updating to ios 14.5.1 ?

It does happen for me as well. To reproduce it you can follow this steps :

1. Put 100% btightness on your iphone 12 pro
2. Place your iphone screen under any kind of lamp ( source of light can be sun as well xD )
3. turn on and off your lamp many times in a row
4. now, you have to move/ shake your phone up and down few times (this must happen)
5. watch how your brightness goes to 50%

The summer is coming so this should be fixed apple? how can we report this?

I did a “test” .. it is 97 degrees here in western Colorado — I walked outdoors for 1.76 miles, 40 minutes—phone got hot, screen darkened. I put an oral thermometer on it when I got home — it registered at 106 degrees…. Definitely overheating. Rrrrrrr….

I’m hearing stories here of Hot phones and screen dimming while indoors in air-conditioned environments.

Now that is very odd. I have been able to reproduce this issue, but every time under direct sunlight or very hot conditions while in use, and always outdoors. I am wondering if certain phones are having much more severe reaction to even warm temperatures than others.

I believe the iPhone 12 is the first to use the newer A14 processor. I wonder how Apple tested for heat dissipation. Prior phones also dim screen when hot - as I reported earlier with my iPhone 7. However I never had this level of problems with prior iPhones (7 and 8)

Yes I have had 3 replacements from @ppl3 c@r3 and all had the same dimming screen. We may have to wait until the 13 or maybe 14 before they address the issue. until then its like replacing a flat tire with another flat tire. You can try buying just the regular 12 mf gf has way less problems with her 12 than my 12pro plus

Yes…. When I started the problem with the 12 Pro, I returned to Best Buy, and with Apple on the phone they did some kind of display setting and sent me home. Same problem. Returned to BB and Apple allowed me to get the 12 Pro replaced with a new 12 Pro. Took it home and went to back yard to try it out, and it immediately overheated and the screen went black. Got back in the car, went back to Best Buy and downgraded to an iPhone 11 Pro. Got $600 trade in on a the phone that was 2 hours old. I just got back from Egypt where I took pictures all day with the 11 Pro in 100-111 degree full sun. The phone did get hot, but I never got warnings, and I successfully captured 12 days of Egypt memories on the 11Pro. (I did remove the cover and placed it in my purse next to a water bottle between pictures. Many in our group were experiencing overheating phones. )

Apple should start selling refrigerator cooling cases for there over priced hot 12 pro max bricks ? Lol the dim screen issue is cause the phones are over heating its that simply they need to fix this ASAP maybe iOS 15 will who knows ????
