iPhone 12 Pro camera not focusing properly

There is always a distant background for me and the focus bounces around and never settle on the object in the forefront. I don’t remember it being like this on my iPhone 8. I’m not good with manual focus so I just use my Galaxy.

I wish I had noticed this when I got my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I take pictures for eBay items and this is a complete hinderance. Now I’m stuck with a phone that despite having a “better” camera, has severe limitations that many people are in need of. This is extremely frustrating and should have been something that was addressed when the phone was released. I hadn’t even read any reviews about this when I decided to purchase my phone. At this point, I just wish I had my 11 Pro Max back.

I might be having a similar issue after updating to the latest ios14.3 release. Which just canme out a day or 2 ago. I will have to take more pictures to see if this is indeed the case. Up until the latest release the focus was great. I was taking pics of my christmas tree and video. The video look a little burry. I would appreciate is someone can verify if you are seeing burry pics at normal distances, not closeups.

As I said I will have to do more testing. I was just searching to see if anyone else had similar issues after updating to the latest release.

Oh, I take it back. The Photos after reviewing them Look ok. I will repost if I see any issues.

Regarding closeup focus. Mine focuses fine but if I move the iPhone to close to the image will be burry untill I move back a little bit. Maybe you are hasving a different issue.

Exactly this, @charlesrn. I would have never upgraded my phone and traded in my 11 had this been advertised rather than the “amazing new camera”. Even from reviewers and bloggers, it seems to have been completely overlooked. It’s such a disappointment, especially since Apple has yet to address the issue, as you mentioned. At the point, I’m just hoping the year goes by quickly and that the next phone actually has a better camera, because at this point, a camera like the 11 Pro Max’s would be an upgrade to me.

I have iPhone 12 Pro Max, the same problem. I was happy with my iPhone 6x - it does better closeups than this one. Frustrating and disappointed. After reading all the complaints, I think apple should give us all a good solution.

I spoke to Apple, they are aware but don’t seem to care, they know they have a problem, the launch and get your money, and don’t fix it, don’t tell me anything, and don’t call back.

You speak about the problem quite definitively, but have you found a source to confirm what you're saying--that there was an actual change in the spec for minimum focusing distance on the 12PM as a result of larger sensor and sensor shift stabilization? While I think it's more likely than not that this is exactly the situation, I haven't been able to find a single word about this online. Lots of complaints from 12 PM owners, to be sure, in threads about this on various sites, but nothing on the major Apple news sites, nothing from pro photographers who often review iPhone cameras and... as usual... crickets from Apple.

I have contacted apple again and also spoke to others from Europe.

We all need to coordinate on a separate platform so Apple can’t remove the tread and evidence.

Apple really needs to fix this. I 'upgraded' my iPhone X to the 12 Pro Max and while the camera is better for most pictures, it is a huge downgrade for close up photos which is a majority of what I shoot. This needs to be addressed and some solution provided!

Funny how if you mention anything negative against Apple in a “community forum” they remove your message. Well Apple, how are we suppose to let you know how your consumers feel? I don’t see you sending out surveys or really putting forth any effort to help. Look how many people post online with this issue and where are you?? Ohh you’re all to focused on making sure no one says bad things.... so where is your quick response to all the complaints about the lies you sold us? Hmm 🤔

What platform should we take this conversation to? I noticed that I'm receiving reply updates in my email that I'm not seeing in this thread, which simply means Apple is clearly deleting comments instead of updating us on a solution. Ideally I would like Apple to refund me and take their 12 pro back, Apple if you're looking for comments to delete, how about you offer us a satisfactory solution for the money we paid for this device?

It’s really ridiculous to me that there are all of these comments and Apple’s response is zip. You can’t sell a product that you tout as “the best yet” when really it’s a big downgrade. I scan barcodes frequently when I’m shopping and have had the worst time doing so. I also can scan my credit card numbers when apps ask to I put it that way.

It isn’t just the non-ability to take close up photos, but it’s hindering its use in other places that need to focus on close up shots.

Do something, Apple!

I have a 12 pro that is updated with the latest OS and I’m still having the same issue focusing on close up images that my old iPhone 8 could do. I contacted my phone carrier to get my iPhone 8 back but of course it’s too late. Luckily I still have my Samsung Galaxy S10. I have more issues with the 12 pro than just the camera.

This phone is suppose to be fast etc but the pages load slower than my son's iPhone 8 and my GS10 and it’s incredibly laggy.

Oh, thank you for mentioning scanning barcodes and credit cards - I didn’t connect these problems with the camera issue, silly me!

Yes, you are right - I can confirm that I had problems with both scanning barcode and credit card, plus photographing closeups I mentioned previously.

I tried to contact Apple via chat, three people from Apple chatted with me and no one could give me any solution, at the end they said they scheduled someone to call me, but never happened.
