iPhone 12 Pro camera not focusing properly

My iPhone 12 Pro's camera is not focusing properly. It doesn't focus when it is around 8-10 cm away from the object for a close up shot. I will need to move it further away to focus then go back in for the shot.

Well, I had a nice visit at the Apple Genius Bar today. My iPhone 12 Pro Max’s camera could not focus on fine print at close range - like it had no macro field of focus at all. My Apple Genius ran a diagnostic on my iPhone & that came back with a recommendation to do a FORCE RESTART of the iPhone:

Press & release the volume up button, then press & release the volume down button, then press & hold the power button until the apple logo appears.

Like magic, my iPhone now focuses in closeup macro mode perfectly.

Yeah, I feel your pain @charlesrn.

To add salt to the wound, if I remember correctly, even my very old iPhone 6s Plus from 2015 was able to focus closer than my current 2020 12 Pro max, which cost me 1300€.

Why does Apple disappoint me so much.. First the Airpods Pro ANC issue (I bought them at the end of November 2020), where they reduced the ANC effect by a huge margin, because apparently hearing nothing was so dangerous to some people that they got into accidents and I assume they complained to Apple. I assume as to avoid lawsuits, Apple reduced the effect of ANC, rather than let users configure the level. And now this camera focus issue.

@Mrkinch78: Interesting. So only the "weaker" 12 does not have this issue?

Isn’t it strange how 12 pro max users are insisting that a phone that they don’t have (12 pro) is not having the same problem or that it’s fixed. It we weren’t having the same problem we wouldn’t be here saying that we are, you’re sounding like Apple. It may not be as bad as on the 12 pro max, but us 12 pro users are also facing focusing issues and unable to scan barcodes.

If your 12 pro is now fixed, can you comment that it’s fixed so we know that you once had the issue and now it’s resolved?

But let’s not all get sidetracked by going at each other on this. That’s pointless. We are all sharing a similar problem and we are all equally frustrated so let’s work on making sure we stay on the same side here.

Everyone posting here is posting because we have issues with macro focus, and focus with apps that require an up close scan. It’s us against them, not us against us

It's just unbelievable that the 12 Pro and Pro Max lineup has this huge flaw. If only it was a software issue.

I mean, come on.. my old 6s Plus was able to focus better in closer range.

I already sent feedback to Apple via the feedback form, but I doubt they even read these. Unfortunately, these kind of issues are usually solved only via public media and/or lawsuits. Only then would Apple take action. Otherwise, they either say that "this a feature and works as expected" or does not acknowledge the issue at all.

Of course they say it’s by design haha. That’s corporate not taking responsibility. And if in fact it was by design then why are so many of them saying they know nothing about it. Why wasn’t it presented along with the “upgraded” camera adverts. This is another example of how big companies play games and treat the consumer as a source of money and not as a human. They don’t care about or me but as long as we keep giving them our money, we are telling them it’s ok. Why would they fix something or do something better when they know people will just buy it regardless? The masses are sheep and rarely do people stand up for what’s right by choosing how and with whom we spend our money. People stop buying = changes get made. Everyone, do you not realize the consumer is in charge if we vote with our money? Stop giving your money to businesses that don’t care about the consumer. It’s really that easy. Stop giving businesses your money out of habit or convenience. If you vote with your money than how can you ever be upset about what you get in return? Just change your vote next time. You realize it’s not the iPhone that is the product, it’s us. If the iPhone were the product it would constantly evolve for the consumer. Where has apple ever evolved? They are copy cats that use flashy colors and nice words lol

Apple kept evolving until Steve Job’s passing, that’s when they started getting left behind. The creative genius is gone so they’ve been spitting out underwhelming devices with copy cat features and removing things that we actually need like earphones in the box and a wall charger (which I did not know prior to ordering) and I paid more than in previous releases to not have these plus a crappy camera????

It’s interesting to me that we’re being told multiple things. When I talked to Support last week, I was never told this was an issue or that it was functioning as designed, I was just told I need to take it into a store to be seen by a specialist. So frustrating! I never would have traded in my 11 Pro Max if this had been something that was mentioned to be a complete failure. But alas, I’m bargaining that that’s why it wasn’t mentioned.

Agreed. I will definitely be waiting to hear actual reviews before purchasing the next iPhone. I hope people will come here and post once they get it. If it’s confirmed as fixed, I will definitely be upgrading. If not, I’ll trade to a 12 Pro instead. Just a bummer on all fronts, especially that Apple has yet to even acknowledge this issue.

Same issue here on my 12 Pro Max. I had terrible difficulties trying to focus on newly emerging leaves on one of my trees yesterday, so I did some sample shots this morning with my phone versus my employee's 11 Pro. The inability to focus up close on my phone was downright shocking in comparison to the 11. This is my first iPhone, so I am quite disappointed in the limited function.
