Does the iphone 12 scratch easily?

i have my iphone 12 here with me still in the box, i’m scared to open it as a quick google search has resulted in many people saying their iphone 12’s have scratched really easily. As i’ve payed £799 i don’t want to scratch it, any answers?

Your prerogative, of course.

But be aware that the Samsung forums are full of customers complaining how easily their screens scratch, and Samsungs come with a screen protector preinstalled from the factory.

Corning, and the industry as a whole, worked together to move to a glass that is somewhat easier to scratch but is much more shatter-resistant.

You can add a screen protector to protect against scratches; there’s nothing you can apply to a screen to meaningfully protect it from shattering.

I have had iphones since the 3 and they have all eventually had scratched screens but that is after years of hard use.

The iphone 12 screen is terrible. After only a month my case (not Apple) has scratched two lines across the screen. These correspond to the position of stitching on the case. This is probably only cotton and definitely not a hard material. Luckily I spotted the damage before it was too bad and have fitted a screen protector. The first time I have done this.

I though the iphone 12 was supposed to have some better scratch resistance.

there is something wrong with this new Ceramic Shield - my mini scratched within 4 days - worse than any previous iPhone and despite being in protective case. I took it back to the store and just got a replacement. This time I bought and for them to fit screen protector right out of box. I’m very disappointed because I loathe screen protector and I had beautiful black phone in black case with pled screen on dark mode - it looked awesome in a stealth kind of way. Now the shiny lip edge of the screen protector ruins the finish :-((.

Good, you've protected your new screen and you should be fine.

There's nothing wrong with Ceramic Shield, and in fact it is more scratch-resistant than either the iPhone 11 or most Androids.

Note the Samsung Galaxy S20 and S21 phones come with a screen protector applied at the factory.

Rather than raise the price of the iPhone, Apple allows you to choose the screen protector that best works for you.

The reason why this happens is because the new glass is harder so it has a lower chance of shattering. However by doing this it's more prone to scratching. That's why I always use a screen protector I also learned the hard way. My phone once got a new screen due to it being so scratched up. It lasted for 4 hours until I counted 3 new scratches. I felt like an idiot not ordering a screen protector.

Well, my first response was deleted by Apple because it wasn’t constructive and supposedly provided feedback. Not sure what the difference is in providing feedback and answering your question. But, I’ll try again. Yes, it scratches easily. I just upgraded from the iPhone X to the 12 Pro today. I had the X for three years without a scratch. I’ve had the 12 Pro for almost eight hours and the aluminum trim is all scratched up. I put an Apple leather case and screen protector on as soon as the phone was out of the box. However, the trim is still exposed and scratches incredibly easily. It’s disappointing.

Mine scratched with absolutely minimal contact. This article on tempered glass is interesting:

Perhaps the corning ceramic shield may have surface impurities leading to easier scratching? I know nothing is scratch proof but I am trying to explain how it could scratch with minimal force. I will be applying a screen protector (perhaps these protectors should be built in?).

YES YES YES!!!

I got my Iphone 12 last week, read lots of reviews which said the screen was far superior to previous Iphones and that a screeen protector wasnt necessary!! Let me tell you - I fully intended to get a cover and protector anyway, but due to lock down and the reviews saying how much better the screen is - I wasn't too concerned about using it for a few days!!!

Needless to say - big mistake, even though I have been careful with the phone - I have only used it for 3 days - it is scratched - I'm even wondering if it was scratched to begin with becasue I've barely used it!!!

GUTTED!!!!!!

Got my iPhone 12 Pro Max scratched on the second day :(

I thought it was durable and since the camera lenses are protruding, I placed it on a flat clean surface with the screen facing down. Then I just noticed that there's already a scratch that you can actually feel when you slide your fingernails over. If only I have bought a screen protector before using it.

Yeah. You should feel cheated. We are all cheated. I get it, these screens are more shatter resistant. This seems to be accomplished by using softer glass. And that softness scratches easily. I, for one, assume that shatter resistant would mean no more screen protector. But clearly we need a screen protector still. Not for shatter protection but for scratch protection. Kind of negates the point.

I have (& always get) AppleCare. I recommend it - they’ll fix anything within reason. You can’t go in for a repair every month, but when you have an issue it’s fantastic- I showed them the scratch and literally waited (2 hours) while they replaced my screen at the Apple store. No questions asked, and they listened to my rant as I explained how I’ve never had this problem on ANY other Apple product.

Basic coverage is 5.99 a month. Theft protection is double that. I have Basic.

From the Apple website:

"Tough is great, but we also wanted to make it scratch-resistant. So, using our dual ion-exchange process we use on the back glass, we protect against nicks, scratches and everyday wear and tear."

They advertise scratch-resistant against every day wear and tear... it simply isn't true. It does not even compare to older screens in the wear and tear department....It is supposed to be break resistant and scratch resistant.

This is my fourth iphone starting with the 4S and then the 6Plus then the 8Plus and now the 12 Pro Max - I keep them for 3ish years then upgrade. All previous versions no scratches on screen and have never broken a screen. New 12 Pro Max - scratched in 3 days of inside home gentle use - not put in a pocket; not put in a purse; not dropped; not treated roughly; big scratch on screen - from where I have no idea.
