I had the same problem after macos 11 big sur update. After the update, the USB ports were working but not the ethernet port.

I found a simple solution using new drivers provided by UGREEN (Chinese company). My type-C adapter is BASEUS brand, but the new drivers worked, since most adapters use Axis or Realtek chip, the brand does not matter!

RTL8153/B, AX88179 and AX88772A series of chip network card drivers have corresponding MacOs 11.0 drivers upgrade, they can be directly updated with new drivers, like normal upgrade solution.

To identify you network card, make sure your adapter is plugged in, then:

  • choose Apple menu > About This Mac, then click System Report (more details: https://support.apple.com/guide/system-information/get-system-information-syspr35536/mac)
  • Look under USB (usually under USB 3.0) search for model name like: AX88179, AX88772A (for Axis) or RTL8153 (for Realtek). Sometimes it may only be just a number (product ID): 0x8153 (then 0x8153 = Realtek8153) - if not familiar with this part, please refer to screenshots examples below:

Next, download the latest drivers for Axis/Realtek provided by Ugreen (the company is making Thunderbolt-Ethernet type-C USB adapters for MacOS). Since the download page is in China and in Chinese, I uploaded the driver on Google Drive:

Drivers for Type-C Ethernet Chipset RTL8153/RTL8153B for MacOS 10.12 to MacOS 11:

FYI: you may find other updated download links on the English website, Type C products (support > download)

To upgrade the drivers, follow the steps below.

  1. Unplug the external USB/Typce-C ethernet device.
  2. Uninstall the outdated driver if you installed drivers previously (I did not uninstall anything).
  3. When booting press and hold the "Command+R" key until the Apple icon appears on the screen, and the computer enters the recovery mode (if you have not entered this mode, please restart it again). More about Recovery Mode here: https://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac-recovery-mode-3674052/
  4. Select "Utilities" (top menu) > "Terminal".
  5. In the terminal run the command "csrutil disable" (it will disable System Integrity Protection, it's probably possible to re-enable it later, I did not try, or when MacOS 11 has been properly updated).
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Install the newly downloaded driver.
  8. In System Preferences -> Security and Privacy, you will be prompted to allow this driver installation, accept.
  9. Plug in your USB-Ethernet device again, and you should be able to access the Internet normally now.

I am not a IT expert but searched a solution for a long time and this is the best one I found for now.

Hey Duane Deal,

this works with my iMac! It is not a solution but a workaround, because some users will need AVB and some network clients are not compatible with Jumbo frames.

I spent days researching for a solution. This definitely was one.

Apple, why don't you check all the basic functions like the built in Ethernet hardware before you release a new system? This one is already version 11.2 and not 11 alpha or beta! Apple becomes more and more like Windows regarding the software quality. Please correct this incompatibility issue with your own hardware chip Broadcom 57766-A1 that you use in the iMac. Some people will need AVB and some can't use Jumbo frames in their environment.

I think it would be a good idea for Apple to comment directly on this and let us know when their hardware will work again with their software (Big Sur).

We all do not have ancient computers and they were all built by Apple. It is actually the least BEFORE the release of a new system software to make sure the existing own hardware works with it, so that such rudimentary functions such as Ethernet in a 2019 iMac are safely guaranteed to work by 100% in the beginning of 2021.

I have more than twenty Macs in my company and I cannot update them to Big Sur, because they all have the same Ethernet hardware. We are not in beta anymore and the version is not 11.0 but 11.2.1 already.

So Apple, when will you solve this big problem?

If anyone has an option for USB 3.0 Ethernet connection to a USB port, please let me know. I cannot find an Ethernet adapter for USB 3.0 compatible with Apple OS Big Sur 11.0. i know that the thunderbolt Ethernet Gig adapter works fine for Big Sur --- BUT -- my Macbook Air 2017 has only one Thunderbolt port which i use to run my external monitor.

By releasing Big Sur without a USB 3.0 ethernet adapter compatible with Big Sur, Apple has made my 2017 Macbook Air nearly obsolete. that used to be a Microsoft move which drove a lot of frustrated Windows users to Apple. Now Apple is doing the same user unfriendly moves and we have no options.

thank you again OneEskimo. i will check out the QGeeM adapter you describe. It sounds like the right adapter.

I will contact the company too to see how compatible they think it is and if they have any workaround suggestions. Ditto for Apple Support about the install i would do.

I am not sure what a clean install is, but i will move up the learning curve. Usually i do not mess with software hacks. I am more a plug-n-play and update-the-driver kind of guy.

Net net, i'm on the road to find out. i'll let you know how it goes. Best to you

Steffel, thank you for your very helpful and illuminating comment. We can only hope that the Apple powers-that-be not only saw your post but are working on this continuing frustrating problem with focus, dedication, and speed. When did Apple Microsoft?

The articulated solutions i have seen on this Apple Community chat are daunting and complicated.

One hopeful note, however, is my wife's 2020 iMac 21.5 inch seems to work fine with Big Sur without any special adapters or gymnastics. She downloaded Big Sur by accident one week ago and i was prepared for a nightmare .....but it was a very nice surprise --- everything works!! .... including Office 365 for Mac, a 5-year old HP printer and a 4-year old WD My Passport for Mac backup for Time Machine. She is on ethernet with great speeds up and down. go figure.

Please let us know if something meaningful--and hopefully positive--- happens in your world regarding Ethernet and Big Sur. Best regards

Hi Steffel

You got a pretty impressive network. The MacOs update is 32 bit to 64 bit transformation with no small change with regard to third party software. Clean installs might be required for MacOS update for Client ethernet Macs but not without input from your 3rd party database technical support. Yes, you may have ethernet problems with your client Macs but your M1 mac book tells me something else. You should start here https://doc.4d.com/4Dv15/4D/15.6/Using-4D-Server-64-bit-version-OS-X.300-3838955.en.html and consult your third party software manufacturer, for 32 bit to 64 bit conversion requires some attention to detail. After interpreting wether your server has been set up as a 32 bit to 64 bit first then may I suggest getting your M1 working, then, followed by doing a clean install only one of the client Macs before jumping to the whole network. As as former IT manager of computer a network, that is the only way to approach major updates to a complicated multi-platform network.

Highest regards.....
