Big Sur Applications Loading Slow and Dock Bounce

WOW thanks Tim, so insightful. Crazy to think after spending thousands of dollars and committing the entirety of a business to Apple, you should expect it not to fail after months of beta. You’ve really cleared up this gentleman’s concerns.

This Big Sur is totally appalling. I have used iMACs for about 10 years and they have been excellent. The startup app' load speed is reminiscent of WindowsXP/7 (the reason I switched to Apple). The cap it all sometimes I have type 10 characters into safari before it even displays 1. Frankly doing this update was a big big mistake

Yes my iMac 27-inch 2017 is now taking about 5 minutes to start up since upgrading to Big Sur and there is nothing active on login items. Before that, it used to take about 30 seconds to less than a minute.

Indeed my late 2015 iMac 21.5" 1 TB fusion Drive seems to be getting faster to start and I am booting from a filevault2 volume.

so it may be updating caches and optimizing the placement on he SSD part of my fusion drive.

No need to be snarky. Perhaps he had tested the beta and release candidates prior.

I cannot download Big Sur and am still on Catalina. Everything was running very slowly but that has stopped.

It was happening on Catalina as well, now it's working ok though

More than likely, the system is rebuilding caches, indexing, and other background tasks. After a major upgrade, that is not uncommon, and can cause things to run slow for a while. Give it some time and see if it gets better.
