After fresh install ALL Apps from AppStore crash with Namespace CODESIGNING, Code 0x1

Hey all,

first time posting here.

I performed a fresh install of MacOS 10.13.6 (via internet recovery), did not recover any files etc.

Used a Samsung 840 Evo SSD. Before I had a Crucial M500 SSD in use.

Every App I download via AppStore crashes instantly on launch and all have the same issue:

Termination Reason: Namespace CODESIGNING, Code 0x1

I tried to reinstall the OS again without positive result. Only the pre installed Apps like maps etc. work.

I'm far from an expert on those matters, and couldn't find anything similar on the web. Only found people who have issues with one app getting that error. But nothing systemwide like I am experiencing.

So if anyone has a suggestion on how to make my computer properly usable again, I would be delighted!

Nice to know:

I'm on a Macbook with a failed GPU. So I have made following changes to the system (which have worked for the last 5 years or so without an issue). But here are the tweaks I use to keep the System running on the internal graphics.

  • Applied "nvram fa4ce28d-b62f-4c99-9cc3-6815686e30f9:gpu-power-prefs=%01%00%00%00"

  • Moved the /System/Library/Extensions/AMDRadeonX3000.kext to another folder within Library called Extensions-off

  • Load the kext manually after boot with "sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions-off/AMDRadeonX3000.kext"
    • Usually I had a small sh to automatically do that at boot.

I don't think that will work unless you install a different OS than High Sierra.

I have spent five days now troubleshooting with three different Macs and operating system configurations. It's not a and issue with the Macs. It's something on how App Store apps are not being code signed or are improperly signed in the App Store/High Sierra relationship. I suspect something changed in the App Store early this week due to the rollout of macOS 11 Big Sur.

As I mentioned here or on the other related discussion, I reverted back to my original Mac configuration and reinstalled High Sierra...the same issue was still there.

To be clear...

My iMac has been running High Sierra since the OS debuted in the fall 2017... No problems for more than three years.

Every nine months or so I erase and reinstall a fresh new factory install of High Sierra to keep it clean and at peak performance....I've done this about four or five times now with no problems.

Early this past week I backed up the data, reset the hardware, wiped the drives, install a new copy of High Sierra over the internet from Apple's servers. Reboot and its nice and clean and fast and beautify.... EXCEPT FOR THE APP STORE! which was working fine last week!

Everything points to something having changed in the past week with High Sierra and the App Store

I have the same issue as well as many other people. The issue has been reported in eight different discussion threads that I know of.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252030900

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252037712

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252032870

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252061206

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252030032

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/252059424

Observed behaviour is:

Almost all apps downloaded from the Apple App Store crash with a 'Code Sign Invalid' error (CODESIGNING).

It's not conclusive, but the issue seems to...

...have started around Wednesday last week (2020.11.11);

...affect macOS High Sierra (all versions, unpatched and patches);

...affect systems that have had the operating system recently reinstalled.

Just a reminder there is two discussion threads that I know of about this issue.

In an initial thread I mentioned that O talked to Apple Support:

On Thursday when I conclusively convince myself that I could figure out the issue I booked a telephone appointment with Apple Support.

Friday afternoon I spent about an hour on the phone with an Apple Support representative who immediately ran through some off the basic troubleshooting tricks. This was a waste of time because many users know these things, but I understood Apple Support follows a script.

Once we finished wasting time on the basics we got to the core elements of the problem and tried somethings with safe mode, admin users, other users, remote, etc.

When I described further that the problem wasn't only with 3rd party apps in App Store that it was also with the Apple apps he was a bit condescending or defensive that Apple (I paraphrase) doesn't endorse or recommend 3rd party apps in App Store! WTF Serious! Thats not the point. The point is nothing on the App Store works in High Sierra if you have recently formatted and reinstalled that OS.

Anyway, we exhausted the amount time he could spend because the iMac is out of warranty! I was directed to go to an Apple Authorized Service. Thats not going to happen because a) this isn't my fault (Apple changed something); b) I'm not paying for something that isn't my fault (Apple changed something); c) we're in the middle of a health crisis and I'm identified with an at risk health condition.

Anyway, the problem has been noted and I anticipate Apple will act if there is a critical mass of users with the issue otherwise they will just quietly issue a policy statement that it isn't supported under certain scenarios...our scenario :(

In the meantime I'm going to be trying out what another user did and partition and format the drive directly as APFS instead of HFS+ and then do a clean install (rather than having the High Sierra installer convert the drive to APFS). The user reports success and that they will further test with recovery of accounts and settings to the install.

Once I am finished I will post my findings, good or bad, to both discussion threads. In the case of 'good' I will describe my process for other to try.

Crossing fingers... :-)

Hi 302man, I see you've joined the High Sierra App Store App Crash Club.

It's hard to tell if Apple will fix this. The issue coincides with recent changes on Apple's side. Transfer and installation of apps is working but something related to the Store DRM changes part-way through using High Sierra App Store; first, it works, then it doesn't.

High Sierra is still under support so it is technically being maintained. However, I was informed in June that maintenance support of High Sierra would cease by the end of this year. This is part of Apple's 2-3 year roadmap to migrate everyone off of Intel-only hardware and onto Intel/ARM.

That time frame seems fair but since High Sierra is still maintained I would hope Apple fixes this so we can get a little more utility out of our computers.
