After every major upgrade there are processes that occur in the background such as new indexes and databases for such things as Photos or Search. These take time and the system needs to be up and running to resolve it. Try setting system NOT to log out or shut down for a day or so and you should see improvement.

One possible solution:

I had the same problem with my 2017 MacBook after downloading Big Sure last Monday. Nothing suggested here (like removing/updating Chrome, waiting for the program to be fully installed, etc...) ever worked for me.

I went to check my computer at my lab yesterday and the person in charge finally found the problem: Malwarebytes was the cause of the overheat. After removing it, my computer was back to normal (@Gérard/Pouchet: thanks a lot!).

It's a little bit tricky to remove Malwarebytes though : you may have to update it to be actually capable to uninstall it. I guess there should be some help online. Otherwise, we have to wait that Malwarebytes or Appel fix the problem.

I've had exactly the same issue with my MBP 13'' 2019. For me the noice hasn't been that serious, but simple tasks turn the fans of my computer at low-medium intensity. I updated as soon as possible and it hasn't improved as expected. It's really crazy how simple tasks like opening Netflix (ugh, it's the worst with Disney +) could do this. Specially since that never happened to me before updating. At times, I'd close every single program to see if something changes but the fans would still be running.

Mine was running aforementioned APUDevicesAgent in the background - I think it was trying to connect and sync to, but failing to do so, my iPhone. I had so mnuch connecting problems that it would not recognise or sync iphone, that I called Apple and was on for 1 1/2 hours, spoke to three different people and tried the same inane things only to be told in the end to wipe both phone and computer - I said no as this did not see a solution.

SOLUTION:

I force shut down the APUDevicesAgent (you can force shut down anything that it running in the background), force shut down the finder and the computer, then started up again, and now nothing untoward is happening, and I can sync my iphone with no trouble.

Hope this works for you, but if not, please let us know because this board is better than all the Apple "geniuses" put together!

I think so. As I wrote above, I think there are some problems with certain actions in Big Sur that makes something keep running in the background. It took me a while, but what eventually worked - and this cleared up the hot running, fan, connecting problems, battery, etc. - was:

  1. open Activity Monitor (find it in “other” folder in Launchpad) and click top tab “%CPU”. You will see what is using a lot of energy.
  2. If this/these are something you can shut down, good. If not, force quit those programs.
  3. shut down computer. Anything that will not shut down or gives you a message saying the action cannot be done because something is in use, for e quit. You can force shut down the computer by holding down the fingerprint key.
  4. restart after it cools.

good luck!

Yes as stated I repeatedly checked activity monitor and never saw any concerning CPU utilization but fans were blasting away. Just saw something interesting. Have noticed been noticing a message "increase display contrast on". This is new since Big Sur. Evidently under accessibility there is a display option. The "increase contrast button" is not checked. The slider for "display contrast" is dialed up one notch. Think this happened during the software upgrade. I have now set this back to normal. Will see if I have anymore issues.

I had a kernel and kernelmanagerd grabbing most of my CPU. Turned out it was malwarebytes. Deleted it. Rebooted. All good. I do know it takes a few days for Spotlight to reindex a drive but that seems to be done now too. All good battery back to normal. Fan not running. For a while it felt like the old days of owning a PC and you always waited for a few weeks to upgrade while bugs were worked out. Guess Apple is spending all the brain power getting ready to adapt to their own chip vs Intel

Maybe they will do an update. Reminds me of the old PC days where the rule was NEVER to update for 6-8 weeks until Microsoft solved bugs. You need to look ate your activity monitor. Likely a gremlin of some type hogging CPU which creates heat and drives the fans. Overheating is never good. In my case I saw a reference to kernelmanagerd Yup, that was it for me. I found the app that was driving it and everything back to normal. It did take a few days for Spotlight to reorganize files..So good luck

I disagree that the overheating issue is normal after a system software upgrade. This is the first time that I have experienced this issue. I would add further that my MacBook Pro 15 does not overheat until I use Safari. As soon as I get on any website, the fans turn on and the heat rises. It is very annoying. Further to get the heat to cool down, I flush all of the cookies and the fans immediately slow down. But as soon as I go onto a new page, the fans start right back up.

So, I can't imagine that indexing is the issue. I installed Big Sur weeks ago and indexing should have been complete by now.
