Excel file crashes after Big Sur updates.

Just completed Big Sur Mac OS update. Noticed some excel files with .xls no longer opens and will immediately crash when tried to open them.

Anyone experiencing the same issue? Any suggestions/solutions?

Thanks.

In my previous case with Excel2016 (16.16 - now MS stopped to update) crashed at Big Sur, Excel spreadsheet file was not corrupt and Windows Excel opened the file without any issue. Upgrading to Excel2019 (16.44, 16.45) resulted in ok with Big Sur now.

I've been asking for the help from 7 apple chat advisors.

This is a workable. follow the steps below :

1) visit the icould.com , then click the iCloud Drive and upload one of the problem files .

2) then try to download it back to your Mac .

They recommend doing the same process on the documents so that they can be repaired and functioning again.

They also said that the files may have been damaged when upgrading.

wish it help !

Sorry to hear that. No issues for me with Big Sur 11.1 and Excel 16.45, part of MS 365 subscription.

One solution is to uninstall the application and reinstall it.

Take a look at some suggestions on Microsoft community forum here: this is searching on the term Excel + Big Sur

My Mac is up to date and with Big Sur. And the problems began after my last renewal of Office, which I assume is Office 2019.

Opening Excel, it would open jpg files and pdf files and everything except excel file - and they'd all be goobly gook. Then finally one would be an excel file that said it had been recovered. Then it might or might not work.

I did the upload/download to iCloud as suggested by someone earlier and the files are fine. Tried opening Excel without using that file and it's back to messed up - loading excel start up files.

I am also having issues with Excel post Big Sur update. Same issue with .xls files crashing. Also with any files linked to other files crashing. Also having an issue with a large workbook and can't figure out what is causing that issue. I have even copied all of the data over to a new file and reentered all of the formulas, and that hasn't solved the crash issue. It's one I use regularly, so this is frustrating.

I've just begun experiencing Excel Crashes on my 2015 27" iMac running Big Sur. Every time I go to set accounting format it crashes. A pretty essential function. Until recently I had enjoyed exceptional reliability running some extremely large spreadsheets. I'm also experiencing more general odd issues such as with mouse reactions! I haven't even begun to look for issues in Word etc!
