iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

I agree. Software must be controlling the level of capacitance required to register a touch differently when the phone is locked. It should be easy for them to fix this with an update. The only way I could see it being a grounding issue is if actual different parts of the board were accessed in lock vs unlock mode and I can’t imagine that’s true.

You don’t even need to touch the camera. Since the bottom of the MagSafe case is cut out, you can rest the phone on your pinky. That’s how I hold my phone anyway because the clear MagSafe case is like a bar of soap (a different complaint). It took me a little while to notice the issue because my pinky is almost always touching the metal when unlocking my phone.

I returned our two 12 minis today. Liked the size of the mini and I’m pretty confident Apple will fix this lock screen issue in an update, but after experiencing very disappointing battery life over the last three days we decided we needed the bigger capacity batteries in the larger phones. Ended up going with the 12 pro, hoping they will be solid phones for us. Good luck to all the mini owners!

Yes, the controller sees every little touch. Software just decides whether or not to act on it. There could be different touch parameters depending on the current operating condition.

My assumption is the current parameters are just borderline and that is why the feedback is so mixed. One subtle change (case, screen protector, etc) makes or breaks it.

I found that lighter touches work better for the issue which is a bit counterintuitive at first glance.

I had the same issue plus the flashlight and camera buttons on the lock screen were not working. I sought help from Apple’s chat support and had a software reinstalled via iTunes and it now works perfectly fine. I read somewhere that this issue is not going to be fixed by iOS 14.3 so try getting help from Apple’s support team and see if it fixes your issue. Best of luck!

I have the same problem with my IPhone 12 mini. I had trouble entering my passcode when I was still at the ATT store. I bought a case and screen protector while I was there and the salesperson put both on. I didn’t try entering my code prior to that, so I don’t know if the case or screen protector made any difference. I usually need to try a few times to slide up to access my screen and cannot answer calls if my screen is locked. After reading the various posts in this forum tonight, I tried calling my IPhone from my house phone when my phone was locked and was not able to answer it. I then unlocked my phone and called it again and was able to answer it. This is very frustrating. I traded up from an IPhone 6, so I initially thought it was just an issue of having to adjust to the newer phone features but now that doesn’t seem to be the case. I’ll be calling Apple in the morning.

I have a new 12 mini, no case or screen protector on it yet. I’ve read about the Lock Screen issue, and am not experiencing that yet. My phone just had an unresponsive moment while I was on a website, trying to slide the screen to the next image, as well as moving text up or down. It was not responding to my input and was a bit jerky for a few moments, but then it suddenly resolved itself.

Please note this happened without a case or screen protector, and while browsing a website.

Just wanted to advise we have a similar problem on two new iPhone 12 minis but to give more detail. We have both got covers and privacy screen on the new phones. The touchscreen works perfectly fine for everything except when the phone is locked and an incoming call (or FaceTime call) comes through. The swipe to answer will not respond. It is like all touchscreen response is lost/overridden by the incoming call. To me that seems to be a software conflict but I am not the designer/programmer. My only solution thus far is to have the phones on "never lock" (which is not great security) but if you are expecting an incoming call no other solution. Otherwise you have to wait and phone back. We have now logged the problem (as we thought it was us until we compared notes and both were getting frustrated). Major disappoint is that for the total spend we now have to wait 3 days to visit a techbar. The over the phone support was impossible to hear and just got too frustrating. Lovely people but like talking to someone down the bottom of a very deep well. Watch this space I guess.............. :(

I have now noticed in locked screen mode neither the camera or torch buttons work either. I tested on our phones after reading a tech review published yesterday saying how Apple had big problems with this phone and it matched exactly the issues we having. I also feel sorry for support desk staff who appear to have had no internal notification and are having to google the internet to find out the comments starting to gather momentum.
