iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

I haven’t read all of this, but does anyone know if it’s the screen protector or the bumper part of the case that’s causing the problem?

I put a Rhinoshield bumper and tempered glass screen protector on mine and immediately got the problem. I don’t want to trash the screen protector but I’ll take the phone out of the bumper for the day and see if anything changes. Trouble is, the issue is so intermittent it’s hard to tell.

I’m not sure about what specific software was reinstalled but make sure to back up your data first. Connect to the support via a laptop as you will need to restart the phone a few times and doing so will disconnect you from the tech rep assisting you. I had to do a factory reset after turning off Find my, disconnecting the iPhone from my iCloud and restoring it from iTunes. A software gets downloaded then you will have to backup and restore via iTunes. Mine now works normal just as how it was out of the box before getting a case and a screen protector. And yes, I still have both screen protector and case.

I feel like they have a lot of the same issue in queue and Im so sorry that you were asked to wait. Mine is already working as normal, flashlight, camera, pin when wearing a mask and couldnt use face id, answering calls when locked are all working fine after my session with the tech support. The entire process took about 4 hours, though!

I have the same issue, however I just figure out that we can have a workaround to go through the keypad when we need to enter the passcode instead of using touch ID.

Can we use iOS shortcuts to enter the passcode on the lockscreen? The shortcut could be triggered by the double-tap on the back of the iPhone. I know it's major security breach but currently... Unlocking the phone or entering the passcode to use apple pay while wearing the facemask is almost impossible. I was thinking if we can use shortcut to enter the value provided before in the app which is currently open.

I have the same problem as all of you but it is not OK with screen protection only. Works much better but pinch-to-zoom is quite a problem as well.

When the phone is in case, it helps to touch the bottom of camera lens (metal ring). I have also tried to insert an aluminium foil to the case and wrap the case inside out (on the spot where I am holding the phone). This will also fix the problem but it can "scratch" the phone...

Hope they will fix soon via iOS update

I had the exact same specific issues described in this chat (i.e., with swiping to answer incoming FaceTime calls, with the flashlight, with the camera, etc.). However, after updating the software to iOS 14.2 last night, it seems to be working better. With a locked screen, I have now being able to:

1.- Swipe to answer, both video and audio, incoming FaceTime calls. (Tested this morning) — will have to see if this is a permanent condition over the course of the next few days.

2.- Turn the flashlight on and off. Must hold the icon, a simple “one touch” won’t do it. (Tested last night and this morning) — will have to see if this is a permanent condition over the course of the next few days.

3.- Activate the camera. Must hold the icon, a simple “one touch” won’t do it. (Tested last night and this morning) — will have to see if this is a permanent condition over the course of the next few days.

The only function with which I still have problems is with swiping to see notification in locked screen. Sometimes it seems to work and sometimes it doesn’t. I think this is probably a combination of ui coding and a conflict with the face recognition. I have tried to show notifications while pointing the camera away from my face and I get a glitchy response. I have tried to show notifications while pointing the camera to my face and as soon as it recognizes me and unlocks the phone it looks like it is unable to show the notifications (as if it were confused between executing an instruction for a locked screen when the phone has been unlocked). Are others noticing this issue?

NOTE: all of these experiences have been with the same generic privacy screen protector and case that I installed a couple of days after I got the iPhone 12 mini.

That’s not the point these things should have been tested before the mini was released and they should have informed there technical support as soon as issues were being raised you can still get in touch with them and they make out there’s no problem instead of just being honest with you mine only works without screen protector on but they won’t attempt liability for any scratches to the screen while they supposedly sort it

Here is the best plausible explanation so far I read from reddit.

Apple has built a function so that your phone will not be waken/unlocked by accidentally touch on your pocket/bag. They use certain “amount of touch” to consider as a accidentally touch. That explains why everything is fine after unlock.

However in the mini, when apply SP somehow this “amount of touch” getting smaller than most of people’s thumb so it still “thought” that we just accidentally touch it. Maybe it’s due to smaller size of screen, I’m laughing my *** off if that’s the case. Anyway, when it considered your thumb as accidentally touch all your touch will not work as it should be.

Why touching the frame would help because it knows that you are actually holding the phone, there is no need to check for that “amount of touch” so any touch would do.

That’s why issue happen only when you have SP (it falsely detect accidentally touch) AND a case (it dont know if you are holding the phone).

You know what are work around solution. 1 need to touch gently with the tip of your thumb. 2 need to touch another metal part of the phone body at the same time. 3 remove either SP or case.

I hope Apple can fix it with a hot fix, it’s really lousy for an flagship device.

Bought an I phone 12 mini and can’t answer calls on the swipe. Contacted Apple support; they were not aware of issues and offered to change my phone but I would have been without a phone for up to 10 days; not acceptable!

Took my screen protector off and it works but don’t feel happy as the screen could easily get damaged.

ive ordered an Apple recommendation Belkin (£29.95) screen protector and an Apple case (£49) ridiculous cost .... it better work!!

There is an update to the operating system that I downloaded last night. The update mentioned some of the issues we are having with this phone but I’m still having the same problem today. I’m finding that if I use my Bluetooth to answer my phone, I can do so, but if I don’t have my Bluetooth on and I’m not actively using my phone, it won’t let me slide to answer.

It doesn't stop to the lockscreen though !

Although i can't say if the problems are related, when in a call, if you have to input numbers from the keypad (for example when your call ends up with a call center), inputs can either not be registered, or registered twice.

Kinda like the butterfly keyboard hahaha

So yeah, i guess it's most likely related to "accidental touch safeguards" if that makes sense.

Hopefully this will be patched in the coming days...

As stated in this forum it is the combination of a backcover and a tempered 0.3 mm glass screenprotector what causes all the problems. I do not want my screen unprotected so I installed a Selencia screenprotector which is a very thin plastic foil and is also very cheap.

Touchscreen problems are now solved and everything works fine including the lockscreen. Protection of tempered glass is probably better but at least my screen is reasonably protected and I can always change the protector when everything is solved.

Not sure if it's been posted already, but when I plugged in my phone it works perfectly. Seems like a grounding issue? Secondly, even when I unlock my phone, swiping through emoji in imessage with the bigged part of my thumb doesn't work well or at all at times. If it is a grounding issue, can this even be fixed? Would they have to recall them? Any idea as to what might happen? Any electrical engineers in the thread?
