iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

I hope Apple responds about this issue soon. I hate not being able to protect my new device unless I’m willing render it useless...

I didn’t have a case or screen protector on the first day I had my phone while I waited for both to arrive and everything was working fine. I put the case and screen protector on the next day and immediately started noticing issues with swipes and taps not being recognized on the Lock Screen. I couldn’t turn the flashlight on unless I touched it multiple times with various amounts of pressure, and once it was on I couldn’t turn it off. Couldn’t answer a phone call yesterday because nothing would register at all on the Lock Screen. I went to the Apple store to pick up another purchase and I couldn’t even unlock my phone to show them the QR code for my pickup. I talked to a technician while I was there and he said he thought it was unlikely to be the screen protector. After troubleshooting everything with me for several minutes he was just about to suggest a screen replacement or a device swap, but asked if I wouldn’t mind trying it without the screen protector on... sure enough, the problems seemed to instantly disappear. He looked at the screen protector and said it didn’t seem any different in terms of thickness or anything else from the ones sold at their store. I’ve used this same brand of case and screen protector on other iPhones without issue.

Yes i have the same issue. Put on a ESR screen protector and also a Spigen Case and immediately had issues swiping up from bottom of screen when on lock and especially when using a thumb rather than forefinger. Also when receiving calls the screen touch does not seem work consistently when swiping across. Funnily enough I got an email from the screen protector vendor saying they were aware of an issue with iphone 12 minis and Apple are aware of the problem. This is what they said 'Please know that the iPhone12 mini currently has a known issue recognizing up and down swipes on the lock screen with a case and screen protector on. We recommend that you contact Apple Support to resolve this issue. Chatting with Apple support they did not acknowledge there is a known problem and I sense they are collating all the bugs to prepare hopefully for a patch in 14.3 release. They did ask whether the iphone works correctly when it is on wired charge and strangely enough it does. Interestingly it also appears that not all 3rd party wireless chargers work with iphone 12 minis. One of mine works ok and the other not.

I’ve left all the gear on mine expecting a frustrating day ahead. That’s tempered glass front and back and a bumper. Last night I couldn’t even use the slider to power down the phone that was stuck in a call I couldn’t end. Today has been almost pain free apart from slight insensitivity to upward swiping from lock screen. It’s an odd problem. I still can’t use the button to call our landline number when it’s opened in Contacts, but the 3 buttons next to it (message etc) respond fine as does tapping on the number instead of Call.

If Apple don’t sort it, I’m either trashing an expensive glass shield and going back to Zagg stuff, or sending the phone back and carrying on with my old 7. First upgrade since the 7 and it’s been disappointing so far.

I am also having the exact same issue with my iphone12 mini. I have the Zagg screen protector and Otter defender case. When I try to call a contact the touch buttons are not working correctly. when I finally make a call the touch buttons do not work at all. i cannot even hand up the phone or go to speaker or anything. Something definitely wrong with the touch. Like others have mentioned when the phone locks and I try to swipe up it does not work correctly. I am very disappointed.....please let me know what everyone finds out. Thank you

Adding my experience to this thread:

I got my iPhone 12 mini 256gb on launch day. There is an issue where it does not always respond to touch. This is most evident on the Lock Screen where my right thumb just cannot get the screen to respond. Usually a different finger will work, but not always. The problem exists elsewhere, especially in the camera app where it is frustrating trying to select options as the screen does not respond to touch probably 3 out of 4 times.

I fitted a glass screen protector on day 1 and have tried two cases. I have not taken the screen protector off yet as I never had to with my iPhone X so don’t want to until Apple comment on this.

Same problem.... I took my screen protector back to TMobile and they said they had tons of people coming in to return their protectors because they thought they were the problem. I talked to Apple and they suggested I talk to the screen protector (Zagg) company........ they told me they can’t speak for the problems people are writing about, only my situation and they believed it to be the screen protector. •___•
