iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Please let me know what screen protector your try and if it works. I have the Zagg invisishield around $29 and it seems pretty thick. I need some type of screen protector that works.

My phone does work fine without the screen protector. My daughter has the iphone 12 larger version with the exact same zagg invisisheld and hers works fine.

I just got my phone yesterday, 12 mini. Added screen protector and a plastic case. Today I could not answer phone calls because the touch screen was not picking up my finger when touching the screen while attempting to unlock it. I work in Cupertino on De Anza Blvd, so my phone is available for Apple engineers to see it if need to. I think I will go back to my iPhone 6 because that at least is more reliable when it comes to phone calls.

sSame issue as everyone else, but before reading about these issues I thought it was my phone so I went to Apple and one of the reps immediately said that Apple is aware and it's a software issue. Just as I was walking away the rep said if I wanted I could still exchange mine for a new one, so I did. I'm still having the same issue as everyone has mentioned, but I find that holding the phone by its sides, and using my index finger everything works great with the exception of answering my phone which I need to swipe several times before I can do so. Forget about using my thumb, it just doesn't respond well, at all. This is with a case & tempered glass screen protector installed.

Definitely a conductivity issue. If the case or screen protector is removed, you’re effectively touching the phone. The Lock Screen issue is only fixed by actually touching the phone itself. This, and plugging the phone in. The only work-around if you want to keep both the screen protector and case on, is to simply touch the exposed back camera area while attempting anything on the Lock Screen. So if you’re right handed, rest your pointer finger on the back camera area while you swipe/type passcode with your thumb. I hope there will be a real fix soon.

All, I may have a resolution that worked for me and may work for you. I purchased a 12 mini the day it came out and bought an OtterBox Defender Pro with an OtterBox Amplifier screen protector. I was having intermittent touch issues as well since I got it, and unfortunately I ended up having to restore my iPhone 12 mini through iTunes and reinstall iOS 14.2 using recovery mode (I've had iPhones for years, and erasing content and settings typically does not fix an issue such as this). to use recovery mode, connect your iPhone via a lightning cable to a PC or Mac, press volume up, then volume down, and then hold the power button until the lightning cable with a PC icon appears on your screen. That means your iPhone is in recovery mode. I was monitoring my PC while doing this, and it reinstalled both iOS and also reinstalled the iOS firmware as well (which may have been the culprit) Also, DO NOT restore your iPhone with a backup. For me the problem remained and I had to set it up as a new iPhone; However for some, it may go away. That being said, I resolved my issue and my touch screen responds fully now with no problems.

I am experiencing the same issue. I bought this device couple days ago and from the box I used the screen protector and custom plastic case. I have already replaced two cases and two screen protectors without any positive results.

Unfortunately, I cannot replace this device to 12 or 12PRO because I live in Russia and Apple should acknowledge this issue for me to be able to change the device.

I hope that Apple will fix it in 14.3

I am wondering: it was working immediately after a restore and stopped after a while. This to me clearly means that the issue is software. Could it be that it is some app you installed after the restore that started the problem? Since there are so many people that have this issue, if it is indeed an app the culprit, it should be a pretty popular app: WhatsApp? Gmail?

my assumption with my case (mentioned on P. 23) is that the touch sensor system for my screen probably picked up the second glass layer from my Otter Amplifier resulting in loss of feedback; so the only known workaround (if you want tempered glass or any case with a screen protector) is to press your pointer finger over the flash with a moderate amount of pressure while attempting to press the desired area (such as the torch flashlight shortcut on the lock screen). Other than that, you'll have to go either with a plastic screen protector or none at all (which I did in my case. I took my Amplifier off until there's a remedy).
