iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Hi there

I have the iPhone mini, and I always used Tech 21 screen protectors which have always been compatible with their cases. There is nothing wrong with the phones - If you look on the 'Tech 21' website, they state that the screen protector is compatible with the Magsafe case. I suggest you look at their website! Do not use cheaper screen protectors that are incompatible!

I bought new iPhone 12 Mini on 13th Nov, 2020. I have facing strange problem with this phone.

1. If I am using this phone with case (either MagSafe case or any other local case) along with screen protector: iPhone 12 mini screen becomes unresponsive/freezes. I am not able to attend calls, not able to unlock it.

2. If I am using either case or screen protector: everything works fine.

I reached out to Unicorn Store to replace the device but they denied to do so, at last I contacted Apple support but they also said they cannot help customers to replace the faulty device in India due to 3rd party reseller policies.

Can anyone help me in this case??

My daughter has the iphone 12 (larger 6 inch) and uses the Zagg Invisishield screen protector and has NO issues. The phone touch screen works perfect.

I have the iphone 12 mini and use the EXACT Zagg screen protector and have the issues with the touchscreen not working.

Zagg is not an inexpensive screen protector. I am not sure why I have issues and my daughter does not using the exact same protector. I can't imagine that all of the Zagg protectors and many other companies screen protectors no will not work with the iphone 12 mini. That is a huge amount of money they have wasted in the manufacture of their products. I believe it is with the iphone 12 mini hardware or software issue. Hopefully they will fix this...either Apple or the screen protector manufacturers. I need a screen protector. feel very odd using it naked :)

All, the issue is relevant to a touch pressure sensor which is a piece of hardware. Using tempered glass results in a loss of feedback because you're applying a thick layer of protection that reduces touch feedback response due to the hardware thinking too much pressure is being applied to the screen. I've had this happen not only on older iPhones but also with Androids I've used in the past. From talking with tech support over the years and developing my own knowledge from experimenting, the only workarounds to do until Apple releases a software correction are as follows:

1: keep the screen protector on and apply minor pressure over the flash using your pointer finger and press the desired area (such as the torch light on the lock screen)

2: use an enhanced plastic screen protector such as a RhinoShield from Evolutive Labs

3: remove the screen protector and use just a case (like what i'm doing).

The other iPhone models use different touch pressure sensors because their internals are different for all of the components. In due time, Apple will come out with a software correction for this. Until then, these are our only options I believe.

*I have an OtterBox Defender Pro with an OtterBox Amplify tempered glass screen protector with it.

Hi,

you can use thiner glass < 0.2 mm or film (foil) protection.

my tempered glass is 0.15mm thin (Benks kr) and all is working fine with many cases - tested 10+ silcon, plastic, leather.

All glasses with the standard 0.3mm thin results with touch issues on lock screeen - No matter the brand...

so in my case pernament solution was just thin glass - thiner one than all standard in the market

There is nothing wrong with the iPhone mini - You need to use a screen protector that is compatible. I have MagSafe case and use Tech 21 Screen Protector with no problem! This does not need a fix from Apple as the phone isn't the problem; it's the screen protector that is not compatible - probably due to the quality and thickness of the glass protector. Suggest you look on Tech 21 site and purchase a top quality screen protector at £29.99 for the iPhone mini. You will find that your problem is solved.

Whaaaat?!? This is not Iphone Mini’s problem?!?

How can it be not Apple’s problem when you can only use certain screen protectors?? and even Belkin’s screen protector THAT APPLE RECOMMENDS does not work??

if Iphone Mini does not have any issues then it has to work with any screen protector on like the other models or any other mobility devices.

if Iphone Mini does not have any issues then it should work no matter how you touch the screen, with a flat thumb or a tip of a finger.

$40 ZAGG Elite+ glass does not work well. It’s not the glass. Its not hardware. It’s the phones software! Works fine everywhere else except the Lock Screen. Different set of touch recognition parameters are loaded for the Lock Screen. Wish people would stop suggesting wild ideas on what they think it is, when it’s obvious they have no idea on how a capacitive touch screen works.

I have something interesting to add – For me, the problem is linked to the Lock Screen, but the problem also happens in the camera app, but ONLY if you access the camera from the Lock Screen.

Accessing the camera once the phone is unlocked (click the camera app icon) and everything works. Access the camera via the Lock Screen and I cannot use my thumb to move between Portrait settings.

I believe that Apple will deploy a SW fix becasue in case of HW , the issue should appear after unlock as well. As we Know the issue is only on lock and ,wake up’ screens.

ok - touch the metal elements will help but in case of some grounding again whole system should be affected - not lock screen only ...

Belive that workaround is simple - very thin glass or foil film protection.

putting aluminium foil to cover or similar workarounds sounds and looks ... stupid - sorry...

better option is just remove the sreen protection till sw fix deployment

There is something wrong with the 12 mini, for sure. Just might be you have one that doesn't have the issues.

I've been using iPhones longer than I can remember and I've never had these issues with any of them regardless of which case or screen protector I've used. Also, all other 12 models do not have these issues. I've also mentioned before that Apple is aware of the issue
