iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

So another problem came up with the touch screen. I just noticed it today. When the phone is not physically held and if it is lay on the table or against something, the touch screen and Lock Screen are still not responsive. It’s only responsive if you are physically hold

the phone (touching the back of the sides). And it would work normally too if it is plugged into the charger.

I had the Lock Screen issue since day one when I got this phone. However, the update 14.2.1 fixed it. But not there is this problem. Anyone else have the same problem?

Yes, everyone I know who has the Mini has acknowledged that’s the problem has been solved ever since the 14.2.1 update.

If the issue is still happening try and run your phone first without the cover. Observe changes, if any.

Also try and remove the screen protector and then observe changes if any.

And please don’t forget to talk to Apple about it. The engineers out there are quick to update us and tell us if the issue is being faces by more people. If that is the case, then they would straight away get on the job with trying to find a fix for the same.

Hey guys, so I had 14.2.1 installed and still has issue with picking up calls from locked screen. One guy in a resell place did a hard restart plus he changed my banners in the settings and that seemed to solve the issue. He also mentioned I could re-install the phone through Mac, but tools me to back up to cloud and not to the Mac because any issue in the SW would download with the back up. My camera and flashlight still does not react to my thumb, but I can start it by pressing and holding. I hope another update will fix all of this. I have both screen protector and non mag safe case

Are you experiencing these issues with Apple native application and functions or with third party applications? The reason why I ask is because I used to have “corner” problems with a couple of third party environments when I had the 1st gen SE, and I don’t have them with the 12 mini. It turned out to be a scaling problem on the development side by those third parties, which made a couple of icons located on corners unresponsive to touch on the 1st gen SE, which has a smaller display area.

With everything .. but totally randomly.. sometimes it just works fine.. sometimes, it doesnt register clicks.. etc...

But this is my first IPhone.. i'm coming from android.. so idk.. maybe i'm just swiping like its an android :P

One thing that happens all the time, when i'm at the "app library" and trying to swipe right to go back to the other screen, it just doesn't register, or it scrolls up/down instead ... weird.

Interesting point. I’ve never owned an Android phone, but the few times I’ve tried operating someone’s Android phone I also find myself doing some things wrong and I find the phone “unresponsive”, so there may be some of like (like with your swiping issue). But clicking on an icon should be a very straightforward migration, this may be a phone issue. I am not experiencing that, though.

I will share that my fingers are a bit too big for the keyboard in the 12 mini (it was the same with my 1st gen SE), and a lot of times I seem to press on the wrong key when typing too fast. Not sure if this relates to you. This is not an issue that have when I use a larger display iPhone.

I chose the iphone mini because this is the only "small" phone.. i switched from xperia z5 compact :) so the screen size isn't the problem, mini has larger screen.. but the phone size is same :)

It's less than a week since i'm on an iphone, so i have to get used to things, but it feels like the tocuh issue isn't 100% solved :/
