iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

I have an problem retrieving the the search bar to find an app. After swiping down from top, all that happens is my full screen turns grey. Then everything locks up. I have to click the right side button that leads to a black screen. Then I need to sweep up from bottom to open up my home page again. Still no ability to search.

I've found I need to power off the phone entirely to enable this search feature to appear when I swipe down from the top. I already have the latest software 14.2.1.

Has anyone else experienced this?

You can swipe like it’s an android. There should be no issue or difference with that.

Are you still facing this issue ? I hope you’ve registered this issue with Apple. They’d do a diagnostics on your iPhone and just in case there’s a hardware malfunction they’ll get to know. Also, they would know if this issue is being faced by others as well.

Yes I’ve reported this to Apple. But somehow they haven’t told me that this issue is being faced by others as well. Previously, with the Lock Screen issues they told me about it and were following it up with all that they could. I remember getting calls from them daily informing me about updates regarding the same until iOS 14.2.1 rolled out.

I hope you’ve reported this to Apple too so that they could take it as seriously as they did previously.

I got my wife a iPhone 12 mini and we have the same touch screen issues. She has both a case and a screen protector on the phone. When she types something (ex. Types in the passcode instead of using face login), the screen shows that she is touching the buttons because each number lights up. However, the numbers do not appear entered in the 6 digit dots above. She also has had problems to answer calls.

We upgraded to iOS 14.2.1 when we first got the phone.

Is this still a known issue with Apple?

Incan totally relate to this since I had the exact same issues. And I kept experimenting all possible combinations of screen protector and cover. It was very very buggy.

On the Lock Screen one could only use the fingers. The thumbs wouldn’t get registered correctly.

So much that I even looked up this term called ‘Zombie fingers’. But this was happening only with the iPhone 12 Mini and that too with the Lock Screen.

But this was fixed with 14.2.1.

I hope you’ve contacted the apple customer care and are in touch with them.

That’s what I did till 14.2.1 was released.

FALSE. I had this issue with my first iPhone 12 mini, then I got a brand Jew replacement — same issue. It’s a model issue. Get ready for sweeping 12 mini recall. The issue was slightly improved with this update, but there are a lot of very annoying lingering touch screen issues. I’ve been using iPhones since the very first one in 2007, and I’ve never experienced anything like this.

P.S. For those of you who are experiencing the same thing and wondering if it’s just you, or if you’re taking crazy pills, it’s not just you. Don’t let Apple (or anyone on these forums) gaslight you about it.
