iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

This is exactly what is happening to my iPhone 12 Mini. When I have incoming calls I can't move the slide. Now, after I removed the case the slide works easily. I also have a Zagg screen protector on. I also found that if you press hard while opening the slider it will respond but you have to use a bit of pressure. I just tested the touching the 2 rings of the camera while I called myself on another phone and the slide worked just fine. So I believe this is a grounding issue like one of the posts suggested. Without the case the phone grounds thru your hands to the floor. When the case is on and there is a screen protector the phone seems to be ungrounded.

Merry Christmas all! I just got my husband the 12 mini. We were having the same issue. But I set the phone down with the new screen protector and case on and was working on dinner. I came back and sat down after about 20 minutes and it worked GREAT. I did go ahead and update the software anyway but the issue of the Lock Screen not responding to touch stopped after the screen protector sitting on the screen for a while. I’ve tried it many more times since but before I updated the software and it seems like everything is just fine now.

Went through all troubleshooting steps with Apple support even buying a brand new case from Apple because they said that would be the best case to use to ensure functionality. After an hour on the phone with them and another two days trying to see if a reboot helped the issue still remained. This was absolutely after the upgrade they deployed to fix the touchscreen issues. Yet the issue still occurs. I even returned myPhone to AT&T who sent me a brand new replacement only to have the exact same thing happened with the brand new mini. I’m So frustrated I’m about ready to go back to my iPhone 11 Pro :(

I have an iPhone 12 Mini with a clear silicone case and a ZAGG protective screen on my phone . Whoever suggested putting your finger on the rim of the camera was a genius. That solved the problem of not being able to swipe to accept a call on the first screen before the home screen. Now when I get a call I put my finger on the camera rim and I'm able to answer with just one swipe. I believe the phone grounds itself through the human touch. I'm just guessing but it works fine.

I had the same problem but 14.3 fixed it. I have a screen protector on and a case and everything works perfectly.

The thing I think that fixed it was that I am using a 20mm screen protector instead of the normal 33mm. The

thinner s/c seem to work as all my buttons, flashlight & camera, work as well as answering the phone. This is

not an ad or anything I used an LK 4 Pack (20mm) from amazon.ca. I had an ESR (33mm) and the touch was bad.

The LK 4 Pack is not that expensive so it might be worth a try.

My 2week old iPhone 12 pro max was giving me messages that there was water in my phone, so it wouldn’t charge.

the Best Buy guys put on my case and screen protector, so what the h is that?

I cut off my case and took off the screen protector.

the touch is still not working well, even without the protector.

and, it scrolls back to top by itself.

I want my old iPhone 7+ back...

Even though I just got the new iPhone mini and have iOS 14.2.1, I’m still having the exact same issues everyone is describing. Will update to 14.3 hoping for a change because the issues are really annoying even though it previously only affected accepting calls and Lock Screen issues. I’ve noticed while playing games on my phone I can’t swipe left or right on the portion of the screen that you swipe to accept a call.

I've also had the same issue. Someone suggested on this thread to put you finger on the camera rings (just one ring is works) and the trouble disappears because it seems that there is a grounding issue. When the phone is protected front and back it's unable to ground through your touch so you need to touch a naked spot on the phone. This solution allows me to keep my protective case and screen. Once the phone is open I don't need to touch the rings – only when I answer the phone or try to press the flashlight or camera on the first screen. I've read there are other issues on the updates so I'n not updating.

The metal ring that surrounds the camera lens on the back that's not covered by the case so it grounds the phone to the person. It allowed me to answer the phone with a light easy swipe. I know this sounded crazy but it works great and it allows the phone to stay protected without risking problems with the new updates. Give it a try and let me know if it was successful for you.

Apple has replaced my phone, and my case, and I’ve reset the phone twice, once a full iTunes restore of iOS 14.3. This is not an individual device issue. It’s device-wide. They need to do a full recall.

My wife has a normal iPhone 12 (not the mini), my mother has one too, and my Dad has the 12 Pro. NONE of them have had this issue. It’s just the 12 mini.
