iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Yes, it is a big issue, although my phone works relatively good, but if I want take a call a have to swipe twice or more. And also when I am scroll a long websites, it sometimes doesn’t recognise my touch. I am a fan of apple product , but this is disappointing. I really hope , they could fix it by software update. Otherwise the next phone will be other brand.

As of today, January 3, 2021, I am having the same problems and I already have the iOS update that supposedly “fixed” the issue. Randomly, I cannot login my pin code or answer phone calls. If I had an emergency, I would be SOL! So now, I must make an appointment and go into the Apple store. This ridiculously over-priced phone is a piece of crap.

FYI, this issue has not been solved with the latest update. I received a new iPhone 12 mini this week with iOS 14.3, and I'm still experiencing this. It seems to be worst with the lock screen--I can't even swipe up to get to the passcode screen without using two hands (holding the phone in one hand and using the other to swipe). And if I'm not using two hands, when I tap on numbers, the dot turns white, as though it has registered the number, and then quickly goes back to blank. (But it only does that sometimes, so I have to pay very close attention to avoid entering the wrong password.) Once I'm past the lock screen, I'm able to use the phone one-handed, so I think it's a lock screen issue.

I had my phone for 2 days before I added the case and screen protector and didn't have these problems. Like others, I only have the problem when I'm using both a case and screen protector, not with one or the other. And like others, I'm able to unlock the phone one-handed if I make sure one finger is touching the camera while I unlock the phone, but of course, that's incredibly awkward to do.

I hope Apple is able to truly fix this issue with a future update.

I had this same issue: my phone would not open when I put my phone case and screen protector on, light and camera wouldn’t open either. I thought is was because the lip at the bottom of the case hung over too much and my thumb wasn’t catching the screen properly to unlock it. I’m thinking maybe I I just need to buy a case from Apple ? Which suck because I spent money on this one already

I believe the phone needs to be grounded thru thru the user. But when the case in on and the screen is covered by a screen protector, especially glass, there is no contact between the phone and the person and the phone cannot be grounded. That's why touching the metal part of the camera where the metal is exposed fixes the problem. It worked with me and I found that trick in this discussion group. – try it.

It is not true, Haptic Touch is no longer supported on IPhone 11 either IPhone 12 , it only depends how long you press it, it is not needed to do a bigger force on a screen. And if you need looking for some crazy hacks to work with your iPhone it is not ok. It is not a budget phone , it should work with out this crazy tricks for cheap phones. It is a problem through all device iPhone 12 mini and it is still not solved properly, it is shame.

There is an issue with the case and screen protector used together; I have the MagSafe and also a Tech 21 screen protector; have always used Tech 21. However, it would appear that it doesn't matter what make you use, the same problems arise. I was not always able to swipe up on the lock screen to open; it would take a few tries, but all I do now is lightly tap where you swipe up, and it all works fine. If you just use either the case or screen protector alone, there is no problem. Guess Apple didn't account for this!

Really?I've mentioned it again and again. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my 12 mini since updating to 14.1.

I'm. now running on 14.3 without issue. For these who are putting a band-aid on their issues, demand a new phone and install the current iOS 14.3. This is the best iPhone I've had in years due to its size and I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

I’m sure you mean well, but please stop assuming that everyone else must be wrong if yours is fine.

I’ll say it again, I HAVE had my phone replaced, I’ve updated to 14.3, and even done a fresh install directly through iTunes — STILL the same issues. I’ve owned every iPhone model since the first, and the touch screen has NEVER had issues like this.

I really like the mini, and I hope they keep making it (despite the rumours) but they really need to resolve this issue for all the people who DO have problems, despite following all the troubleshooting steps and EVEN getting a BRAND NEW replacement.

Here’s hoping the 14.4 RC is a step in the right direction.
