iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Credit where credit is due. It’s astonishing that they have embedded so much performance in such a small device. The phone is incredible, and I understand the battery life cannot compare to a bigger phone.

Still, I can do with a regular iPhone, I got used to the size. This issue with the lock screen is buggering me and I don’t see a definitive fix in the short term. I hope I am wrong nonetheless.

No one is having an issue replacing the device, the issue stems that if it is ALL iPhone 12 mini’s have this problem than exchanging for a new one makes no sense or difference at all. Top this with the cost of having to put a screen protector for each exchange really adds up especially since the issue is in regards to screen protectors, cases, or both together.

I spoke with an Apple Customer Service rep and got the same response as everyone else. They claimed it is not a real issue as not a lot of people have reported it to Apple and Apple would have released a statement by now if their really is an issue. They offered to exchange my phone but in all honestly I am hesitant as I am certain I will get another bad batch of iPhone 12 mini. Additionally, if Apple would pay for the screen protector replacement I would jump at the exchange but they won’t. I am also hoping that before this week ends Apple acknowledges the issue and confirms if its a hardware or software issue so I don’t waste my money on cases and screen protector replacement (Manufacturers always charge shipping for replacement).

Please stop posting to forums and reach out to Apple Customer Service, I noticed over 180 comments here so if 180+ people overwhelmed Apple Customer Service Online, Phone, and Apple Stores with their issues directly to Apple they will acknowledge it. Don’t Stop there, Tag Apple Customer Support in Social Media Apps Twitter, Facebook, etc...

I think it's best to do both - it's good to know that others are having the same issue, however it's equally important to get in contact with Apple too. So far this thread has shown that it's not just a one-off ... if people just went direct to Apple, they probably wouldn't know others are having the same issue - given that Apple are (so far) denying it's a common problem.

Guys do not go for a replacement, you are running in circles. This is a problem occurring in all iPhone 12 Minis. Either wait for Apple to release a statement or go for a replacement but taking in another model that is not the iPhone 12 Mini. Otherwise you waste time, money and resources.

It is advisable to report this issue also through the Apple Support app directly to Apple, so they end up acknowledging the error (I am pretty sure they will either tomorrow or the day after).

Personally I am returning mine and getting a regular iPhone 12. The battery life is not as good as I thought either.

Hi!

Is it possible the case lifts up the screen protector on the sides? I had the same issue with my iPhone XS Max, if the screen protector is a bit too big, the case will lift the sides, so you get different pressure point on the phone.

When I got the right screen protector which was a bit smaller than the original one I got, it worked perfectly.

I do have similar iphone 12 mini touchscreen problems. answering a phonecall with the slider is very difficult or does not work at all.

If apple pay ask for the code when wearing a mouthpiece I can not enter the figures and when I can, the pay button does not work. The flashlight and camera on the lockscreen does not work

The touchscreen in general is very temperamental an unreliable

What I’ve found is that the issue happens ONLY when I have my case on. I bought the Apple MagSafe silicon case and when I put it on, I can swipe to get into the phone, but I can’t do Haptic Touch on my lock screen for the camera or flashlight, or any notifications. However, if I take the case off, everything works fine.

Grounding issue, nothing to do with the phone or the case. I see people putting tin foil and other sorts of very creative stuff but let’s be real. The phone should be flawless with screen protector and case, and it should work when laying on non conductive surfaces. During next week Apple will most likely release a statement, I am pretty sure they are fully aware of this as of now.

It would have been a great theory except that once you get pass the Lock Screen everything works perfectly. This issue would have persisted beyond the Lock Screen and into the Home Screen, Apps, etc... if the case was distorting the screen protector to make the Phone less sensitive in those areas. So far I have no issues with this beyond the Lock Screen. The customer service rep had me run test like tapping corners in the Maps App, hitting all the buttons on the Calculator App, etc...They all worked fine. Also, if you place any finger on the camera ring, the issue magically goes away. Troubleshooting this makes you think Hardware Issue because of grounding but it goes away in the Home Screen so you assume Software Issue. It is bizarre!

Nov 15, 2020 3:16 PM in response to Marc_1285

Agreed. After doing a lot of testing it is a grounding issue. Why it works during certain times and not others is bizarre but most relate to the circuitry and when using certain components on the board vs not makes a difference. This does not bode well since that is a serious flaw. The only way they would know is if enough people are putting their claims in through customer service and order a replacement unit. If everyone is just sitting around waiting that’s not giving Apple incentive to do something about it. EVERYONE here should be reporting it and requesting a replacement.

Nov 15, 2020 3:24 PM in response to samuel001

As Marc_1285 stated, ordering a replacement is just going in circles. People will just get another bad iPhone 12 mini, and the wait and see approach on my part, not sure about others, is that I don’t have the funds to keep ordering replacement screen protectors until I get lucky and happen upon the 1-unicorn iPhone 12 mini that doesn’t have the problem. I told my friends on social media to avoid buying, if they bought it hound apple directly, if apple refuses to acknowledge request a full refund and/or upgrade to iPhone 12. Exchanges on what could be an entire product flaw is rolling the dice unless they are happy to be without a phone case and/or screen protector.
