iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

As stated in this forum it is the combination of a backcover and a tempered 0.3 mm glass screenprotector what causes all the problems. I do not want my screen unprotected so I installed a Selencia screenprotector which is a very thin plastic foil and is also very cheap.

Touchscreen problems are now solved and everything works fine including the lockscreen. Protection of tempered glass is probably better but at least my screen is reasonably protected and I can always change the protector when everything is solved.

Same issue as everyone else. Touchscreen is unresponsive at times. Not just the camera button on Lock Screen but also different parts of the screen. Like skipping stories on Instagram the right edge of screen doesn’t always register my tap. Sometimes it does. Left side seems to always work.

I have a case and screen protector. But it appears that is unrelated?

Just contacted customer service and they are shipping me out a replacement. I hope the replacement doesn’t have the same problem.

I've got the same issue ... screen protector and case combination, initially I had the torras "diamond clear" case which had issues when unlocking the phone by swiping up, swapped that for their "crystal clear" case and it seems to have helped with unlocking.

However, the camera and torch icons cannot be used single handed (using your thumb). They work flawlessly if the case is removed - I've found that if you grip the phone in your left hand and press these icons using your thumb or a finger from the other hand, then it seems to work fine. Which implies it's possibly a sensitivity and/or software issue?

I spoke with an Apple Customer Service rep and got the same response as everyone else. They claimed it is not a real issue as not a lot of people have reported it to Apple and Apple would have released a statement by now if their really is an issue. They offered to exchange my phone but in all honestly I am hesitant as I am certain I will get another bad batch of iPhone 12 mini. Additionally, if Apple would pay for the screen protector replacement I would jump at the exchange but they won’t. I am also hoping that before this week ends Apple acknowledges the issue and confirms if its a hardware or software issue so I don’t waste my money on cases and screen protector replacement (Manufacturers always charge shipping for replacement).

Please stop posting to forums and reach out to Apple Customer Service, I noticed over 180 comments here so if 180+ people overwhelmed Apple Customer Service Online, Phone, and Apple Stores with their issues directly to Apple they will acknowledge it. Don’t Stop there, Tag Apple Customer Support in Social Media Apps Twitter, Facebook, etc...

I think it's best to do both - it's good to know that others are having the same issue, however it's equally important to get in contact with Apple too. So far this thread has shown that it's not just a one-off ... if people just went direct to Apple, they probably wouldn't know others are having the same issue - given that Apple are (so far) denying it's a common problem.

Both my husband and I got our phone on Nov 13th and had the same issues as everyone. The Lock Screen is not responsive. In addition to that, we can’t access the flashlight or camera from the Lock Screen. I thought it was the screen protectors and cases but it wasn’t. We bought different screen protectors and cases, yet we still have the same problems. And when someone is calling, I can’t pick up from the Lock Screen. Another problem I noticed is that when I am on a call with someone, the touch screen is unresponsive overall. I couldn’t text if I was on a call with someone, the keyboard won’t respond. I did notice that when the phone is plugged in to charge, everything works fine. So that is weird...

I chatted with one of the rep yesterday and he told me to make an appointment and bring them in. However, it was almost impossible to get an appointment with them because I guess almost everyone is coming in for the same issues. I am so disappointed at Apple. Been with them for 15 years. My husband just recently switched to Apple and his experience is horrible so far.

I had the same issue plus the flashlight and camera buttons on the lock screen were not working. I sought help from Apple’s chat support and had a software reinstalled via iTunes and it now works perfectly fine. I read somewhere that this issue is not going to be fixed by iOS 14.3 so try getting help from Apple’s support team and see if it fixes your issue. Best of luck!

Merry Christmas all! I just got my husband the 12 mini. We were having the same issue. But I set the phone down with the new screen protector and case on and was working on dinner. I came back and sat down after about 20 minutes and it worked GREAT. I did go ahead and update the software anyway but the issue of the Lock Screen not responding to touch stopped after the screen protector sitting on the screen for a while. I’ve tried it many more times since but before I updated the software and it seems like everything is just fine now.

I have an iPhone 12 Mini with a clear silicone case and a ZAGG protective screen on my phone . Whoever suggested putting your finger on the rim of the camera was a genius. That solved the problem of not being able to swipe to accept a call on the first screen before the home screen. Now when I get a call I put my finger on the camera rim and I'm able to answer with just one swipe. I believe the phone grounds itself through the human touch. I'm just guessing but it works fine.
