iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

I experience the same problem.

Trying to work around it, I found that if you don't touch de back of the iPhone (holding the unit just with the lateral frame between fingers, then the problem disappears. There seems to be related with some electrostatic issues when touching the back (magsafe stuff) of the phone...

I hope this could be useful!

I have the same problem here. Screen is unresponsive in lock mode when I have the screen protector (Belkin screen protector sold by Apple) and case (Apple official Macsafe case).

It definitely looks like a grounding issue, because everything works ok if you touch the metal part of the iPhone. The case plus the screen protector seem to isolate the phone in a way that the lock screen becomes unresponsive. I hope Apple releases a statement as soon as possible about this problem. Luckily, the return period is wide and I have until 8th Jan to return it. I am seriously thinking about requesting a refund and maybe getting a regular Iphone 12. A shame because I really like the form factor of this one.

I have the same problem but I found out if you use the side of your thumb or a smaller finger it works to unlock the phone.

For some reason it doesn't work with the flat part of your thumb. That. will help to unlock the phone but the other issue

is the flashlight and camera buttons on the Lock Screen don't work no matter what finger you use. Taking the case or the screen protector off works but I hate having a naked phone. I even cut the bottom out of the case thinking the lip on the case was causing the

problem. It wasn't.

I have noticed that too. If only a small part of your finger touches the screen, it reacts, so you’ll be ok with baby fingers. If not, it does not react. It might be a calibration issue on the screen that could be fixed with a software update. But honestly I have no idea, it’s not my area of expertise.

What I know for sure is that messing up the screen protector or the case (specially if it costs 55 bucks) it’s not the acceptable solution. It must work flawless with screen protector and case. If not, time for a refund.

Ditto to issues. I picked mine up Friday, and as the day progressed it got worse. Having major issues putting in my passcode. This is a real problem when trying to use Apple Pay with a mask on. I also am having problems being able to swipe and answer phone calls. If I have my Apple Watch on, I have to answer the call on my watch. Very inconvenient. I have Genius Bar appointment coming up, to replace the phone, but I don’t think that’s going to fix the issues. I just hope that if Apple discovers it’s a hardware problem, that those of us who will be past the 14 day return policy, will still be able to have our phones replaced without cost to us!

Same issue as everyone else. Touchscreen is unresponsive at times. Not just the camera button on Lock Screen but also different parts of the screen. Like skipping stories on Instagram the right edge of screen doesn’t always register my tap. Sometimes it does. Left side seems to always work.

I have a case and screen protector. But it appears that is unrelated?

Just contacted customer service and they are shipping me out a replacement. I hope the replacement doesn’t have the same problem.

I've got the same issue ... screen protector and case combination, initially I had the torras "diamond clear" case which had issues when unlocking the phone by swiping up, swapped that for their "crystal clear" case and it seems to have helped with unlocking.

However, the camera and torch icons cannot be used single handed (using your thumb). They work flawlessly if the case is removed - I've found that if you grip the phone in your left hand and press these icons using your thumb or a finger from the other hand, then it seems to work fine. Which implies it's possibly a sensitivity and/or software issue?

I just got done speaking to an apple associate who essentially said the phones are not defective, they are operating as intended, and that these posts here on this forum mean nothing. The person basically suggested we are making this issue up, and that apple is fully aware of how the products function and if they found an issue with the 12 mini, it would be announced by now. So sounds like apple doesn't take this serious at all.

I've also found that if you put the phone on the desk and try to activate the torch using your thumb, it doesn't work ... use your index finger on the same hand (right in my case) and it seems to work fine.

As suggested already - connect a charging cable and it works perfectly with case and screen protector fitted.

I did a web chat with apple who initially offered to swap the device (after doing a software diagnostics). I asked for it to be escalated and the next person talked me through restoring the software and setting the phone up as a new device - which made no difference whatsoever ...

They are sending me a replacement. I’ll see if that one is any better. I’m surprised so many people are having issues getting Apple to send a replacement. Something doesn’t sound right. They gave me no problem at all.

If it turns out to be a real problem that won’t be fixed, I’ll return it and get the 12 Pro instead. However I am loving my mini (aside from the issue) so if they can fix it or admit a problem and promise a future resolution, then I’d prefer to keep my mini.
