iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

As stated in this forum it is the combination of a backcover and a tempered 0.3 mm glass screenprotector what causes all the problems. I do not want my screen unprotected so I installed a Selencia screenprotector which is a very thin plastic foil and is also very cheap.

Touchscreen problems are now solved and everything works fine including the lockscreen. Protection of tempered glass is probably better but at least my screen is reasonably protected and I can always change the protector when everything is solved.

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone mini, but I was in the store when we noticed it. We went through every case and every different type of screen protector they had and same issue. Other customers that were purchasing the mini also had the same issues. It works fine without the case and just the screen protector, or visa versa. I'm not sure, but I believe because the new protectors go all the way to the edges that perhaps when the case is on, it's every so slightly lifting the edges of the screen protector causing issues with the touch? I'm going to try to find a protector that doesn't go to the edges.

Agreed. After doing a lot of testing it is a grounding issue. Why it works during certain times and not others is bizarre but most relate to the circuitry and when using certain components on the board vs not makes a difference. This does not bode well since that is a serious flaw. The only way they would know is if enough people are putting their claims in through customer service and order a replacement unit. If everyone is just sitting around waiting that’s not giving Apple incentive to do something about it. EVERYONE here should be reporting it and requesting a replacement.

After spending the last two and a half hours talking to apple the only way they can get my iPhone 12 mini to work is without the Belkin screen protection on they have offered to replace it free of charge but not willing to accept any scratches to the screen while I a wait the replacement but that won’t resolve the problem if the same thing happens with the replacement protector but amazingly they don’t accept that screen protector’s don’t work on a iPhone mini be interesting to see if the same problems still happen with the replacement

I also have a brand new iPhone 12 mini 128GB. Experiencing the EXACT same issues with with the Lock Screen flashlight, camera; randomly it won't register my touch for the passcode unlock, and hanging up phone calls, swiping phone to answer phone calls, swiping to power off..I also use the apple branded mag safe case (silicone though), also running latest update iOS 14.2 (18B92) as well. It does have a Belkin ultra glass screen protector on it and I have not tried it without as it was a $40 screen protector. But it sounds like its an iPhone issue and not Belkin. For the first time I tried operating it with the case off and it does seem to be MORE responsive with the apple mag safe case off. The flashlight and camera are a haptic press and do require a bit more pressure but it works much better with the apple branded case removed. Also to note, the silicone apple branded cases as silicone buttons, not metal like the leather. Glad to know I am not going crazy. Did not have any issues when plugged into the apple fast charger via USB-C (I do not have the mag safe charger). Spoke with apple care and they are acknowledging it as an active issue, no known solutions or work arounds.

This is exactly what is happening to my iPhone 12 Mini. When I have incoming calls I can't move the slide. Now, after I removed the case the slide works easily. I also have a Zagg screen protector on. I also found that if you press hard while opening the slider it will respond but you have to use a bit of pressure. I just tested the touching the 2 rings of the camera while I called myself on another phone and the slide worked just fine. So I believe this is a grounding issue like one of the posts suggested. Without the case the phone grounds thru your hands to the floor. When the case is on and there is a screen protector the phone seems to be ungrounded.

Update your phone to IOS 14.4. Updating solved my problem. If you can't update right away hold your finger over the camera while you open the phone from the locked screen. That should work for you until you update the system. Also if you have a case and a screen protector on the phone, remove one or both and it should also solve the problem.
