iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Definitely appears to be a conductivity situation. I'm willing to bet everyone with the case+screen protector situation is holding their phone with one hand and trying to unlock it with your thumb. If you try to hold it with both hands and unlock it, that also doesn't work. But if you hold it with one hand and then use just one finger from the other hand to touch the screen, it works everytime. Basically, the hand touching the screen can't be touching any other part of the phone at the same time while using a case+screen protector. Needless to say they need to fix this, as one-handed operation is a big selling point of this particular phone. It does make me wonder if this is a problem on all the phones, but most people with the larger phones don't try to use it with one hand due to size, but I might be totally wrong about that.

I’m pretty sure the reason your two-handed method works is because when you’re using your other hand you’re most likely only using the very tip of your index finger to interact with the Lock Screen. If I flatten out my index finger or use the widest part of my thumb while trying to unlock it with my other hand it doesn’t work for me. So it’s still an issue with fine vs course touch input and conductivity

I am having the same issue and I’m glad that I’m not the only one. I really hope that this can be corrected with a software patch as opposed to device replacement. The worst is when you’re wearing a mask and it requires pin input. It’s virtually impossible. I’ve also had it occur when attempting to end a phone call. It wouldn’t register input and I had to wait for the other person to hang up.

Here’s how to bypass swiping up from the Lock Screen (a temporary fix):

Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap > Double Tap > Home.

This will allow you to bypass swiping up by tapping the back of the phone (near the apple logo) twice. It will take you to the Home Screen.

Wow no where does my general statement single out specifically you, it was my personal opinion on the matter and the fact you are being defensive suggest you might feel a little guilty or wrong about it. I was simply stating how I would feel if I constantly requested a replacement for something that didn’t have anything wrong with it, if companies are happy to replace them cool but I would still feel bad. If you are okay with it than that’s you but not me. Relax and take a chill pill, last thing anyone here needs is an internet warrior with a short fuse and extra strong typing hands that wants to escalate a non existing issue. If you take general statements personally you may want to take up a hobby and vent there.

I'm having the exact same issue, when the device reboots and asks for Passcode with the Protective glass on. it does not accepts the touch i have to try multiple times to register the alpa or num.

i called customer care to check, as per them we have to remove the Protective glass, but that does not help as the device gets prone to Scratches.

Hoping Apple will fix this soon

That's the same as they told me, except it was to wipe phone and reinstall software (even though they'd already done a software diagnostics and it came back clean) - but I was also then requested to set it up as a new phone and test it again, in case it was something in the backup ... suffice to say, it still had the same issue even when set up as a new device.

As mentioned before, the screen works fine without screenprotector en stating this to apple support in the Netherlands the answer was, so there is nothing wrong with your phone and we can do nothing further just keep using your phone without the protector.

On the argument that a screenprotector is a requirement and should be possible came no further reaction.

Apple offers to put on Belkin Screen Protectors in their stores. (in Germany at least)

How about the argument of putting on an Apple Case and (at least Apple Certified) Belkin screen protector in store? As some of the posts point out- it doesn't even work in this particular combination using only "certified" accessories.

Correct. “Don’t use a screen protector” is not an acceptable solution if they are selling them in their official stores.

The only thing we can do is keep bombarding the Apple Support Team until they deliver a statement regarding this problem. I would not advise asking for a replacement because I am pretty sure all iPhone 12 minis are facing this issue (although I might be wrong).

For the time being, I have requested a refund and I have purchased a regular iPhone 12. It’s a pity because I really like the form factor of the mini. But the battery life was not that great either.
