iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Returning it isn't the best option if you actually plan on keeping it. ;-)

The Support is only able to provide you one option at a time. If the employee thinks the iPhone is broken and replacing the phone will fix that, he won't do anything about the case unless you "proof him/her wrong". I don't think that a discussion thread or an article in an online magazine will change something about "how the Apple Support works".

Having the same touchscreen, non responsive issue on lock screen only. And in the days of wearing a mask when having to actually unlock my phone more often with a passcode is a major pain! For me the phone worked just fine with the case only, it was when the screen protector was added that the issues showed up. Same exact issue on my wife's phone also. And like others mentioned, if I'm holding it in my right hand, I can use my index finger and it seems to work ok... weird issue.

After spending the last two and a half hours talking to apple the only way they can get my iPhone 12 mini to work is without the Belkin screen protection on they have offered to replace it free of charge but not willing to accept any scratches to the screen while I a wait the replacement but that won’t resolve the problem if the same thing happens with the replacement protector but amazingly they don’t accept that screen protector’s don’t work on a iPhone mini be interesting to see if the same problems still happen with the replacement

The replacements are just stalling. PITA. Anyone tried with a plastic screen protector?

My guess is the screen when the Lock Screen is on is running at 60hz touch response rate to save battery and voltage spikes. In this state the phone is too insulated with a case and screen protector. Once you are into the phone, touch response rate goes back up to 120hz with a higher voltage and it works as expected.

I’m pretty sure you’ve hit the nail on the head. Why else would it occur only on the Lock Screen AND go away when connected to a charger? I’m sure when connected to a charger it doesn’t attempt to save battery on the Lock Screen.

As of now there are ~400 people with the same problem. The one person with a replacement device said they have the same problem on the replacement. I’d imagine it’s a problem on all iPhones with both a case and screen protector.

Hopefully it’s something that can be fixed with a software update. There’s no way Apple advising to not use a case and/or screen protector is a valid “solution”. I did find that using the very tip of my finger (instead of my thumb) works better for inputting my pin, etc.

If you look around other forums, youtube, twitter, etc... I'm confident the number is WAY higher than 400. I agree that software should be able to fix this since it's not an issue anywhere else besides the lock screen, where it's understandable to have the software tweaked more aggressively against accidental touches. I just hope they fix it quickly.

When you hold the phone with two hands you create enough voltage (as its a very basic circuit, but enough) to circumvent the issue. Very very odd that this was missed, but I assume as the battery is so small on the Mini, Apple have done this reduced touch sensitivity and not applied it to any other models. I can't believe it is that impactful, but maybe picking up your phone 100+ times a day might knock 5% off the battery when at a full 120hz response rate.

I also have a brand new iPhone 12 mini 128GB. Experiencing the EXACT same issues with with the Lock Screen flashlight, camera; randomly it won't register my touch for the passcode unlock, and hanging up phone calls, swiping phone to answer phone calls, swiping to power off..I also use the apple branded mag safe case (silicone though), also running latest update iOS 14.2 (18B92) as well. It does have a Belkin ultra glass screen protector on it and I have not tried it without as it was a $40 screen protector. But it sounds like its an iPhone issue and not Belkin. For the first time I tried operating it with the case off and it does seem to be MORE responsive with the apple mag safe case off. The flashlight and camera are a haptic press and do require a bit more pressure but it works much better with the apple branded case removed. Also to note, the silicone apple branded cases as silicone buttons, not metal like the leather. Glad to know I am not going crazy. Did not have any issues when plugged into the apple fast charger via USB-C (I do not have the mag safe charger). Spoke with apple care and they are acknowledging it as an active issue, no known solutions or work arounds.

Similar issues for me as well. Tempered glass screen protector, and case are both on mine. When I'm wearing a mask and it pops up telling me to enter my passcode since it can't recognize me with Face ID, I try typing in my passcode. It's odd because I can type a number, and as I'm typing the first number, the first dot turns white to indicate I've typed a number, but as soon as I let go of the number the white dot disappears and I have to keep trying to type it in until it finally accepts it. Then it's the same thing with the second number/dot in the passcode. Additionally, having issues with the flashlight and camera button not responding on lock screen. I have to press the flashlight or camera button sometimes 10 times or more to get them to respond on the lock screen. I also was unable to answer a call from the lock screen yesterday. It would not let me swipe to answer. It's odd how it works fine once the screen is unlocked. It's also odd that it doesn't always do it, but does it frequently enough to be a pain in the ***.

I got my iPhone 12 Mini on the 11/13 like most everyone else, but I'm sending it back. Another problem is that I bought it directly from Apple's website with the trade-in option. They give you 14 days to trade in your old phone. My trade-in phone is an iPhone SE 2020 which is only 6 months old. I do not want to trade in my iPhone SE, then find out after day 15 that the mini has hardware issues. While I still could send the iPhone Mini back, I wouldn't be able to get my SE 2020 back then. So, gonna have to just keep the SE 2020 and send the Mini back. Maybe I'll buy it again later down the road once they figure out what the heck is going on.

The Apple tech I spoke with this afternoon said they hadn't heard of any issues like this yet and try to blame it on the screen protector. I quickly rebutted letting her know that MANY people are having the issue and I couldn't understand how Apple "had not heard of this issue yet." Hope those of you that keep your iPhone 12 Mini get a fix that is software repairable and don't have to do a hardware swap. Good luck!
