iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

Check the link that was posted above. I think they’ve narrowed the problem down to a grounding issue. If you touch any part or the metal chassis of the phone, the lock screen touch input starts working normally again.

For now, I’ve found that touching the camera rings while unlocking fixes the problem. It’s not a great solution but at least it’ll get me by before I can get my phone looked at. There’s no way I’m going without a case or screen protector so this will have to do for the time being. I have an appointment to get it looked at tomorrow so I guess we’ll see.

Hopefully this helps someone

Same problem here. Seems like palm detection problem with case and glass. I mean i suppose that there is an algorithm that detects like “n percent of screen is touched = there is a palm touch, ignore it “, and somehow case plus glass makes our thumb touch “bigger”, so either calibration failed on such small screen (screen is smaller but relative number of covered pixels stays same as in bigger phones) or some hardware issue making our thumb detective as “elephants”.

Im hoping for software fix (however offered exchange option, but fir what reason if every mini is bugged)

Not sure if this is any consolation, but supposedly the glass display on the iPhone 12 mini is a stronger, "ceramic" shield making the display more impact resistant. After experiencing the same issues everyone else is talking about, I found a couple of articles talking about the new ceramic glass on the iPhone 12 mini.

For now, I'll just stick with the case and leave the screen protector off.

I got my new IPhone 12 Mini Friday. Put on a Zagg screen protector and on Otterbox case. Was fine Saturday and Sunday started acting up Monday. I couldn’t unlock my phone. Took the case off and worked fine for abit then didn’t. I’ve been reading online. As long as you use a finger instead of your thumb works great. Called Apple and they said they hadn’t heard anything about this. It didn’t work in the Otterbox no matter what so I bought an Apple case and seems to be ok as long as I don’t use my thumb. Something is wrong with these phones. I’m hoping enough people contact Apple and bitch.

This had happen to me since I’ve been on iOS beta. This issue was never fixed.

what’s happening is the phone is trying to unlock Face ID. Well since were wearing face make it’s a little hard to do.

so the phone asks you to punch in ur pin code. Wait a second and punch it in at slow pace. It works every time.

I forget to slow my pace. My 3rd number never registers.

so much for the A14 chip and lightening speeds. When I have to slow my typing down. It’s been like this since iOS beta for me. On my iPhone XS and now today with my iPhone 12 mini.

I am facing the same issue. Initially I also thought it was the cover. I went back to the person I got the cover from but there when he tried it was working. And when. I tried it was working for me too. Strange that was.

But as soon as I got back in the car it wasn’t working. I cleaned my phone, and my hands. And the cover nicely and neatly and then tried, but the issue was bad.

Even while picking up the phone it was tough.

Later on I realised this was only happening ONLY on the Lock Screen and only with the thumb.

So I started wondering my my thumb(s) had an issue maybe. Googled and read about ‘Zombie fingers’, so I even moisturised my fingers ( what not for a new phone ! ). But it couldn’t be that fingers were dry ONLY for the Lock Screen.

So on the Lock Screen, with the thumb everything is unresponsive. Or rather, it ‘misbehaves ‘ , be it the camera or the torch buttons, the camera left swipe or the widget right swipe it just works according to its own mood. But only with the thumb(s).

An easy way to check if it’s working or not is try using assistive touch while the screen is locked.

hold it and make circular designs. If the additive touch is following up exactly the way your finger is going it’s fine, else it’s not.

So assistive touch too, is working properly with all fingers only if the screen is unlocked.

With a locked screen the thumbs don’t behave. Or rather the screen doesn’t behave with the thumb input.

HI All,

I faced the same issue when screen protector / tempered glass installed.

I can confirm that when i changed my screen protector to the thiner one Benks KR 0.15 or use foil protector - issue has gone.

So according to all comments i can confirm i have many silicon, plastic and leather covers and no issue with 0.15mm screen protector.

When i installed belkin or other manufacture (0.3mm) issue appeard again.

In my opinion of course Apple should take care and fix the sensifity / issue.(until that time Apple should stop selling Belkin Invisible in the store).

Mini has thiner frames around screen than normal 12 so that is why the problem not existing in 12 (normal)

But with ceramic shield the thinest tempered glass is also enough!

Just use thiner screen protector !

My case has a “hole” showing the apple logo. If I touch the apple logo with my index finger and touch the screen with my thumb, most of the times everything works fine. But not always... the only thing that actually works for me is to either remove the case (I haven’t removed the screen protector though) or plug in the charger.
