iPhone 12 mini touchscreen issues

Is anyone else having intermittent touchscreen issues with their iPhone 12 mini where it randomly won’t register touch input?

TLDR: my phone screen stops registering touch input randomly only when inside of a case and also with a screen protector on. With just the case on, the screen is fine, and with just the screen protector on the screen works fine. It’s only when they’re combined that my screen goes all janky.

I got my 12 mini today, went to Bestbuy to pick up a screen protector, installed the screen protector, put the phone in the Silicone MagSafe case and set everything up. Everything seemed fine until I noticed that the touchscreen was not responding like it should to touch input. I noticed that the screen would only act up if I had the case on. When I took the case off the screen was responding exactly as it should so I figured it was an issue with the case. However, my sister had also gotten her iPhone 12 mini today and we tested the MagSafe case on her phone but hers didn’t exhibit the same problem.

At this point I decided to pull the screen protector off and test again with and without the case on, and the touch input issues were gone altogether. So I figured, “okay, maybe I got a bad screen protector,” so I went back to bestbuy, returned what I thought to be a faulty screen protector, purchased a Zagg Invisible Shield screen protector, and had them install it for me. But when I powered my phone back on in the car, the screen still wouldn’t register touch input correctly with the new screen protector while in the MagSafe case. I can still take the case off and the screen works fine, but inside the case with a screen protector on, the screen starts acting up.

Finally, I decided to try a different case altogether. We went to Target and I put on a generic non-MagSafe case and the screen issues returned. I’m not sure why but it seems like the issue only pops up when a case is on the phone while also having a screen protector on. If I take one or the other off everything works perfectly. Does it seem like my device might be faulty?

As stated in this forum it is the combination of a backcover and a tempered 0.3 mm glass screenprotector what causes all the problems. I do not want my screen unprotected so I installed a Selencia screenprotector which is a very thin plastic foil and is also very cheap.

Touchscreen problems are now solved and everything works fine including the lockscreen. Protection of tempered glass is probably better but at least my screen is reasonably protected and I can always change the protector when everything is solved.

Hi,

you can use thiner glass < 0.2 mm or film (foil) protection.

my tempered glass is 0.15mm thin (Benks kr) and all is working fine with many cases - tested 10+ silcon, plastic, leather.

All glasses with the standard 0.3mm thin results with touch issues on lock screeen - No matter the brand...

so in my case pernament solution was just thin glass - thiner one than all standard in the market

I've also had the same issue. Someone suggested on this thread to put you finger on the camera rings (just one ring is works) and the trouble disappears because it seems that there is a grounding issue. When the phone is protected front and back it's unable to ground through your touch so you need to touch a naked spot on the phone. This solution allows me to keep my protective case and screen. Once the phone is open I don't need to touch the rings – only when I answer the phone or try to press the flashlight or camera on the first screen. I've read there are other issues on the updates so I'n not updating.

I believe the phone needs to be grounded thru thru the user. But when the case in on and the screen is covered by a screen protector, especially glass, there is no contact between the phone and the person and the phone cannot be grounded. That's why touching the metal part of the camera where the metal is exposed fixes the problem. It worked with me and I found that trick in this discussion group. – try it.

All, I may have a resolution that worked for me and may work for you. I purchased a 12 mini the day it came out and bought an OtterBox Defender Pro with an OtterBox Amplifier screen protector. I was having intermittent touch issues as well since I got it, and unfortunately I ended up having to restore my iPhone 12 mini through iTunes and reinstall iOS 14.2 using recovery mode (I've had iPhones for years, and erasing content and settings typically does not fix an issue such as this). to use recovery mode, connect your iPhone via a lightning cable to a PC or Mac, press volume up, then volume down, and then hold the power button until the lightning cable with a PC icon appears on your screen. That means your iPhone is in recovery mode. I was monitoring my PC while doing this, and it reinstalled both iOS and also reinstalled the iOS firmware as well (which may have been the culprit) Also, DO NOT restore your iPhone with a backup. For me the problem remained and I had to set it up as a new iPhone; However for some, it may go away. That being said, I resolved my issue and my touch screen responds fully now with no problems.

I had the same problem but 14.3 fixed it. I have a screen protector on and a case and everything works perfectly.

The thing I think that fixed it was that I am using a 20mm screen protector instead of the normal 33mm. The

thinner s/c seem to work as all my buttons, flashlight & camera, work as well as answering the phone. This is

not an ad or anything I used an LK 4 Pack (20mm) from amazon.ca. I had an ESR (33mm) and the touch was bad.

The LK 4 Pack is not that expensive so it might be worth a try.

FYI, this issue has not been solved with the latest update. I received a new iPhone 12 mini this week with iOS 14.3, and I'm still experiencing this. It seems to be worst with the lock screen--I can't even swipe up to get to the passcode screen without using two hands (holding the phone in one hand and using the other to swipe). And if I'm not using two hands, when I tap on numbers, the dot turns white, as though it has registered the number, and then quickly goes back to blank. (But it only does that sometimes, so I have to pay very close attention to avoid entering the wrong password.) Once I'm past the lock screen, I'm able to use the phone one-handed, so I think it's a lock screen issue.

I had my phone for 2 days before I added the case and screen protector and didn't have these problems. Like others, I only have the problem when I'm using both a case and screen protector, not with one or the other. And like others, I'm able to unlock the phone one-handed if I make sure one finger is touching the camera while I unlock the phone, but of course, that's incredibly awkward to do.

I hope Apple is able to truly fix this issue with a future update.

It's not how hard you press the flashlight or camera, at all. It's that you need to preset with normal pressure but hold your finger then it for +/-1sec. Also, the case and screen protector have nothing to do with the issue. My first 12 mini had every issue mentioned in this thread, so I took off my case and exchanged it for another 12 mini before any software updates. I put the same case and screen protector (3-pack) on the new 12 mini (which is still my current phone( and had all the same issue. After the software update from 14.1 to 14.2 EVERY issue was solved. And as far as I can see the haptics are still an option on the iPhone 12 mini.

Incan totally relate to this since I had the exact same issues. And I kept experimenting all possible combinations of screen protector and cover. It was very very buggy.

On the Lock Screen one could only use the fingers. The thumbs wouldn’t get registered correctly.

So much that I even looked up this term called ‘Zombie fingers’. But this was happening only with the iPhone 12 Mini and that too with the Lock Screen.

But this was fixed with 14.2.1.

I hope you’ve contacted the apple customer care and are in touch with them.

That’s what I did till 14.2.1 was released.
